Never underestimate the resourcefulness of theives. Rule of thumb - if you can't afford to replace the item, or you have personal information you don't want a stranger to have, try and keep it at home, or at work. If you don't have time to do that, then stash your workbag in your trunk before you leave your home or office; don't put it in the trunk once you've parked at the gym. Thieves watch people parking their cars, to see if they have anything worth nabbing.

I used to work at a gym, and (in addition to cars periodically being broken into), we had a regular series of locker break-ins during regular busy daytime hours. Our new manager figured out the emergency door alarm at the back of the club had been disabled and the lock jimmied. Someone also broke into the computer/tech room during regular business hours, in plain sight, albeit, out of the line of sight of the desk and the patrons.

Always hang onto your car keys, if you have automatic keys. I had a friend who misplaced her keys at the gym, found them tossed in a corner, and went outside to find her purse had been removed from her trunk.

Aaaaand... you can't rely on your car's alarm. My car was broken into, and the person(s) left no trace. He/she/they scooped out some chargers and the GPS I had concealed in the center console. The garage where I park my car is staffed until midnight 7 days/week, and there is only one pedestrian door open after 9pm every day. You have to have an automatic key to get in after hours. We think the thief used one of those balloon tools that locksmiths use to pop open car locks when someone locks their key inside. Even if my car alarm went off, a thief could have walked away, let it reset itself after a few minutes and then gone back to scoop up stuff.

My point is: be circumspect and cautious.

Ok. I always learn a lot from these posts. I can swing home prior to going to the gym at least 95 percent of the time. From now on, I will make every effort to drop the computer off at home and go to the gym from there.

Wow. This is interesting.

I leave my wallet and cell phone in my combination locked locker without any thought about it. Have been doing it 3 or 4 times a week for 6 years without incident. People that constantly have there nose in their phone at the gym are a pet peeve (I'm not including those listening to music). Seems like you should be able to unplug for an hour to exercise without constantly fiddling with the phone. Anyway, I digress. I come across A LOT of unlocked lockers at Goodlife and that baffles me.

With regards to commuting with a laptop......I'd probably swing home first.

When the thefts occurred at my gym, they didn't use a box cutter or crowbar or anything. In fact, when my stuff was stolen they actually relocked my locker so that I did not immediately realise I had been robbed (that gave them the extra time to go to a bank with my cards and rob me again). With the combination lockers thieves are apparently very good at spying on people and working out what combination they used.

When I was a transit commuter and possibly going to the gym, park, shopping etc. after work, I left my company-owned laptop at work as much as possible. I did not want the responsibility of securing it when on my own time.
Even if I had a car there are apparently thieves who can scan for laptop batteries in trunks so not sure that's a great daily solution.
At some points in my career however, the boss had an expectation we would bring our laptops home every night as a form of disaster recovery (if something happened to the office we would be able to work from home). I managed to tip toe around this but I honestly never felt it was a fair expectation as it's really based on a car commuting lifestyle or at least going straight home from work every day, and that was never my life. If it had come to it I would have argued that the gym locker was not a safe spot for company equipment.
I also never found a perfect bag solution for doing a lot of city walking with a laptop.

I carry a work-owned laptop. If I go to the gym after work, I leave the laptop locked in the trunk of my car. My preference is to swing by the house and drop it off that home before going to the gym. That is not always convenient or logical.

I often bring mine -- combination lock. I am at a university gym and thefts have been reported but only from unlocked lockers. So I don't worry about it too much. It would be a huge hassle to try to blast the lock open. I had a lock that stuck last summer and they had to come with a crowbar to get it off.

I wouldn't. I haven't heard of any theft where I go but I don't leave valuables in my locker. I take my wallet and phone with me. I don't bring my laptop to the gym (or Yoga studio).

I wouldn't because I have been robbed at my gym (from a key locked locker). They now have combination lockers at my gym but I know that they have still had thefts. Even with cameras and a staffed reception area. I now carry around my wallet and phone at the gym. Could you fit it in a bag that you can take around with you as you exercise? It's a pain I know.

Guess it depends on what kind of gym you go to , where it is etc. I've never heard of it happening at mine ...but if you're worried , then don't do it . But if they are going to all the trouble of breaking into a locker , your wallet will be gone too .

Of course. :)

I know that box cutters are sometimes used to break into lockers, but am wondering if the concern is great enough to warrant going out of my way to ditch the computer.

Pragmatically, this affects the kind of gym/commuting bag I need.
