Things like stitching, finishing of buttonholes, consistency of sizing, even. My daughter has a work wardrobe largely based on their ponte sheath dresses and that's about all I will buy there anymore. They've even "updated" their basic cardigans, and the quality of the new ones can't be compared to my older sweaters. So for preppy basics (cardigans, turtlenecks that are scrunched, not folded, and shirts and khakis for my husband) I'm buying at LL Bean instead. Bean isn't what it used to be either, but they haven't messed with their basics. I don't think this woman was ever a good fit. I found it interesting that she was only spending a week a month in headquarters in Dodgeville. That says a lot, to me. There's a big difference between Wisconsin and NYC. <br />We were in the Twin Cities last week and made a "pilgrimage" to Duluth Trading Company (not really, we were just in Bloomington and stopped in) and I was very impressed with their clothes (and their friendly and knowledgeable staff). Shirts that are nearly exactly the same as LL Bean, cute-ish shoes for women, great jackets for both sexes. Their catalogs have been a bit strange, though. Fashion forward, they are not, but for good quality basics at a decent price, they are terrific. A large percentage of my husbands work wardrobe is LE. Dress at his work place is traditional and conservative and their no iron dress shirts, sport shirts and slacks are great. As good, I think, as some of the much pricier lines at Nordstrom. &nbsp;I also find nice pieces at Talbots. The quality is good overall (knits, not so much). I get their catalogs and the recent ones have tried to get into "storytelling" where they tell little vignettes about the women wearing the clothes.&nbsp;It was seriously weird, distracting, and somewhat offensive.&nbsp;This situation reminded me of Talbots, another classic/prep clothing brand with HQ in my home state, which tried to upscale/modernize their look over a period of several&nbsp;years, and had to go through multiple rounds of refinancing, buyouts and changes in designers before they recovered from it.&nbsp; </p> <p>These more traditional companies seem to get in real trouble when they branch out from what their customers know and love.
