Heattech cashmere blend is fantastic. It is so soft and lightweight but also very warm. And yes to the baseball hat under a hood for visibility. It also keeps rain out of your face.

Debbie, remember that you cannot return items to Poshmark. You can only try to resell them. I'd encourage buying items you can return when it comes to the puffer, and YES to Heattech :)

Just adding here that a merino wool tube called a snood was a very good xmas present a year ago. There are so many ways to wear it, and it really closes the gaps around the head and neck, as well as being able to be pulled up to cover the face. and yet can just be pulled down around the neck like a scarf when one goes inside. With 20 degree temps or less, I wear a snood covering my head and neck, ear muffs and a loose wool hood from my coat. And it's very lightweight!

If you are buying from Uniqlo, don’t forget to throw in some of their heat tech cashmere blend base layer items. I see the tops are on sale right now and they look and feel lovely. Layers are key to Chicago weather. Also, my daughter recently reminded me how fantastic a baseball hat is under a hood. (Clever girl!) Amazing for visibility while still offering the hood’s protection. Just be sure you have a warm fluffy scarf to close the gaps around your face and neck.

I am going to echo the rec for Uniqlo puffers, plus some layering pieces for underneath that you can take off once you're inside (buildings tend to be overheated in the winter). So, e.g., a zip-up fleece or wool cardigan for layering underneath that you can then remove and tie around your waist. Chicago is a wonderful city! Have a fabulous time with your daughter!

Back to add that a down vest worn under your coat can add a lot of warmth without being constrictive. I have an old one from Lands End, it is one of my most useful purchases.

In addition to all the good advice that was given, does your DD have a coat that she can lend you?
Please be sure that your footwear has good, grippy soles to keep you safe.
Also, toes get very cold in that type of weather. I would suggest some good wool socks to prevent that. I like Darn Tough. They have a lifetime warranty, excellent customer service and they will always exchange or refund. I know you are not asking about socks but my toes are getting really cold from just thinking about February in Chicago.
Also, in single digits weather a knitted face mask does one of the best jobs in keeping your head, face and neck warm.
Enjoy your travels and your DD’s company, Debbie.

If you are not going to use the coat very much, then Poshmark is a great idea. Chris mentioned Eddie Bauer which I would second. They have parkas that come below the knee. They are not as good as Patagonia*, for example, but when they go on sale they are a fraction of the cost. I’ve had one for years, and it’s great for night events, dog walking at night, etc. Also Lands End. They’re in Wisconsin so they know cold. My son’s fiancee has a LE parka we gifted her when they moved to Minneapolis. She’s still wearing it and it’s been eight years!

* I don’t mean in terms of warmth, but rather in design features such as lack of zippers on inside pockets.

Debbie, excellent advice from the Fabbers!

Uniqlo is very well priced. Check out their WARMEST and heaviest puffer option.

Canadian brand puffers are very warm with good reason! My snow and arctic weather puffer is Canadian, and it's VERY warm. If you have an Aritzia near you - check out their puffers. It's a Canadian brand with LOTS of puffer options. They have puffers for varying degrees of cold. Shout if you need more help :)

Thank-you everyone! I will definitely try Poshmark. I did see a bit of the game yesterday. My daughter also keeps me updated on the weather.

I do have boots although I am thinking about buying another pair. She doesn’t have a car so we will be walking everywhere. I did buy a pair of fleece lined legging to wear under everything.

I really appreciate all the suggestions.

Chicago can be very cold in February. I like Kkards idea of Poshmark and I would also try for down. Nothing keeps me as warm as a long down coat (I am in Michigan and have similar weather). Or you could do layers. Maybe a thinner down liner with what you wear at home over it. Do you have warm boots? If you will be walking around those could also be necessary.

Even before the current tariffs the prices of down have skyrocketed and sooo many brands have moved to non down puffers. don’t do it. This is 100% where I’d shop 2nd hand. Postmark has tons of great choices. Look for LLbean, the north face, Eddie Bauer, Patagonia, Lands end if you want brands to start with, but there are tons of other great brands out there. Try to get a coat with mostly down (90/10 down to feathers is imo ideal, but 80/20 would work ). As Carol noted, look for long

Do you spend a lot of time outdoors with her? Or is it more just to get from place to place by car? If you're outside a lot I agree you will want something heavier, but if it's more just hopping in and out of cars, stores etc, I think the Uniqlo recommendation makes a lot of sense; you might also consider a slimmer puffer layered under one of your Texas-winter coats. This option would work for a week in my city, which has a similar climate to Chicago. Enjoy the visit!!

Being from Texas, you will likely feel the cold of Chicago more than the natives do and want a really warm coat. The warmer the coat, the higher the price (usually). Also for me who runs extremely cold, only a puffer will do when the temps are below the upper 20's F.

Not all puffers have the same degree of warmth, and how they look is not always a clue. Macys has Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, and others , and those brands in my experience are more about fashion than serious warmth. I suspect Uniqlo is in that group too but don't know from experience. Aritzia makes gorgeous and super warm coats, but they are quite pricey. The sporty brands often have coats in a variety of temperature ratings.

Puffer coats of any type are lighter than most wool coats so easier to carry around etc. And the packable ones are of course ... packable. :-)

You can always plan to wear a layer under the coat if you don't end up with a super warm one - puffer vest, thick blazer, even a packable puffer jacket. You might have those things in your wardrobe already. if you went with Uniqlo you get a puffer coat AND a thin packable puffer jacket for reasonable prices and be done with your shopping :-)

If you prefer petite sizes (I think you do from what I remember) that will limit your choices dramatically. I need petite sizes to get the right fit in the upper body and waist area and typically look at LLBean, Lands End, Eddie Bauer for puffer coats, or Macys if I want one of the less-warm ones. If regular sizes work for you, you'll have a lot more brand options.

Here in New England (I live in a colder area than the city of Boston) in winter I always wear (or have handy) a scarf, gloves and hat, and make sure they are not thin knits which the wind will blow right through. If you're not outdoors very long or if you run warm a moderately warm coat can be ok with the right accessories. For me an unlined pair of leather gloves is much warmer than a thick knit.

Lots of coats are on sale right now so that should help with keeping the costs down.

I think Rachylou and I were fans of wearing puffers even in non-snowy mild winter weather! I am not an expert on the brands, but I agree with Rock and Carol, I would look at long puffers in Quince, Aritzia, Uniqlo, Cotopaxi, North Face, LLBean, Lands End, Patagonia, Columbia, REI. It looks like you can even get an Amazon brand one for $60.

Plenty of Christmases spent with my extended family in Chicago. The coat of choice for women is a puffer that is long--key long--to the knees. Hood optional, but I would get one with a hood. Over a beanie, helps a lot.

Brands not so sure, I just might do a solid outdoor brand like LL Bean, Lands End, REI, Patagonia.

It is an urban look there--nothing too outdoorsy, but comfort is allowed.

Uniqlo makes fantastic puffers at reasonable prices. Their packable Pufftech is wonderful for travel, but all of their down coats are high quality. There is a Uniqlo store in downtown Chicago if you want to try them on. The Chicago store is quite large. If you prefer to buy before you go, I have had great luck ordering from Uniqlo online. Chicago is so cold in the winter, but it is one of my favorite cities. You are lucky to have a daughter there. I hope you have a great visit.

My oldest daughter is now living in Chicago and I am spending approximately a week with her in February. Here’s where I need help. I do not own a warm weather coat. What I have is for Texas weather. I need a puffer coat that will survive Chicago. I will probably only use this once a year at best so I do not want to spend a fortune.

Please if you have any suggestions let me know.

Thank you in advance.
