Yes, Moira, they were doing 40% off everything and these were already marked down to $20. I may be older and wiser on the shirt. I already had the right color tank top but I didn't quite imagine the other styling issues.

I think a cream or white opaque blouse would look great with that skirt
Through the years I have owned and discarded so many transparent tops. I just never get that to look right.
Everything else is perfect.
$12 you say? I must hit Talbots.

Hi Unfrumped ---

As you said #1 and #4 are similar silhouettes, but they're my favorites in terms of cohesiveness. The deep neutrals read more "sophisticated party" and the colors of the first "fun/approachable party" but both are such great looks IMO.

And sounds like #1 worked perfectly for the actual event.

Echoing trying #2 with black tights and trying to tuck/belt #3.

Great skirts. How about tucking the white shirt into the skirt?

#4 looks terrific! #4 would also look fabulous with the top of #1. And the skirt of #1 - mixed and matched with the hose and flats.

I'd love to see a full pic of #1. Stunning lace skirt!

The straight skirt silhouette always works imo. I love #4 you look so sophisticated.
With #3 I'd like to see the shirt tucked & lighter hose with those shoes too. I think the shirt could look good untucked over jeans though.

Suz and Beth Ann, you are so encouraging!
Suz, I will try tucking this shirt. I did think I was going to get to wear it "out" over jeans but now I don't know. Beth Ann, yes, the jewelry option is a great reminder of things I can add without a huge effort.

I hope the straight skirt silhouette will hold on as acceptable for a few more years (with these or other skirts and with shapewear as needed!) as I think I could work with that as a basic and refresh the style of tops or footwear or jewelry to stay current.

You look amazing in these! I like the boatneck tops very much, particularly the burgundy with the matching skirt. Dressing down a lace skirt makes it perfect for many of our casual but festive holiday gatherings. I've been looking for dressier tops with limited success, too. If you want a little more sparkle, you might look for a brighter, bigger necklace to go with these. These are easy to find and not expensive. Also, sheerer hose and heels or the addition of a jacket would dress these looks up further, if desired.

I like the ease of the low-heeled shoes and the textured legs here for your holiday festive, but not formal look. If I were at a party with you, I'd ask to snap a photo so I could go home and recreate your outfit!

These look totally FAB! I love the burgundy top with the skirt. That is a perfect combination and so current without being super-trendy. Exactly what you were hoping for. Brava!

#2 is great, too, or would work really well with black tights and black booties.

I see the issue with #2. Angie has a blog post on "grinning" that you could look up for reference. Have you tried tucking a shirt? With a belt?

#4 looks fab, too, although it is tough to discern all the detail. This seems like a super silhouette for you and that skirt was a fantastic buy!

Here is an update on my persimmon lace adventure.

I was struggling with finding any tops in my closet that I thought worked in time for this particular occasion. The cardigan shown previously "worked" and I had worn it to church, but it was just not what I wanted for a party.

Photo #1) Just the next day I came across a Talbot's top in the exact burgundy-red for $12.
Now, it is not very "dressy" per se --it's a cotton blend that has a polished cotton look, but I liked the boatneck and sleeve length. Since the party was not super formal, I thought it worked--but fire away! I did go with my near-flat shoes because there is loud music and dancing with Young People. So this outfit seemed festive but was very easy to move (gyrate) in with no wardrobe malfunctions. I had to go bag-shoe color matchy with black clutch, but it has some texture and shine. The top is very wearable with other items and also allows a jacket over if I need to add that to the skirt outfit for more warmth.

The next ones are try-outs:

#2) Ha ha, same top in black, with burgundy-red Hue tights--color does not show up well. The tights are too much with burgundy top, but could be fun for skirt+ leg column of color with more neutral color tops.

#3) Trying a light top--all that is closet-available now--and nude shoe, still wearing red tights but plan to try on with nude hose. I'm learning this blouse is tricky because I wear a tank under, but the tank does not follow the shape of the shirt bottom, so when tank tucked in + shirt untucked there will be this demarcation.

#4) Sorry this shows so dark, but is the bronze lace over black skirt shown with the black boatneck top--again, a less dressy look due to the top, but hope to find a dressy silk or other top, boxy-short, ideally, and maybe something in cream. But for $12 I thought this top allows the skirt to become immediately wearable for some occasions.

Of course the lace skirt and top combos are quite the same silhouette, but hopefully pretty different impact due to color difference.

You can't tell, but I'm wearing my new DK microfishnets in some of the photos! They were the last lonely pair in a local dept store.

I took YLF advice and wore, for party, off-black kind of sheer tights, sort of between sheer pantyhose and tight, for a more medium-toned leg, and I think it worked.

Any suggestions are welcome.
