Oh my goodness. I can be a couch potato, but I can't imagine being kept to a one mile radius. Or not being able to leave the hotel when I want. I hope there are nice outside areas to sit in.
I think you are going to have some interesting stories to tell.

LACeleste: Thanks, I think I'm just going to have a large number of TV outfits so I can change them up if there is a problem with any of the patterns or the stripes.
BarbaraDiane: I do have a very light weight raincoat that can be squeezed into a corner of my suitcase. I'm afraid the only shopping I can count on is at the Walgreens near our hotel. But toiletries can take up a lot of room so it is good there is a back up nearby. I know what you mean about carrying or wearing the important stuff. I'm thinking of just using my convertible backpack/suitcase as my carryon since I also need to bring a laptop, iPad and assorted chargers with me too.
Sally: there will be "behind the scenes" updates. As long as I don't disclose where the contestants are staying - I won't get into trouble!

ChewySpaghetti: I've been watching the weather and I'm hoping I can make due with the t-shirts and jeans if it gets too warm. We will mostly be indoors but I am bring a pair of shorts for free time.
AviaMariah: Thank you, it's certainly exciting. The shows so far have shown mainly my sister and her husband and daughter. Then my other sister and her husband went out for one of the tapings too. In fact we teased both sisters that they have now been shown crying on national telelvision!
Suz; I could use some more of your wardrobe - at least the dressier portions. My daily lifestyle is firmly on the casual style of dressing! I forgot about Rae's blog - I'll have to check it out for ideas.
Alexandra: You're right....that is the great thing about scarves, they can provide all of the color but take up very little space.
MsMary: Thanks for the advice about the stripes. I'm not too worried about the skirt because I'll probably be shown sitting down. The grid pattern on the black and white shirt might be a problem but I'll have to wait and see. I have to plan for six weeks of shows but there is also the chance that he could be eliminated after the first show. Who knows what will happen - we never expected him to even get on television! Trust me, if I can find a way to see you and get a home-cooked meal -, you'll be hearing from me!

Wow...I stepped away for 2 hours to play with clothes, per Joy's advice, and look what happened! Thank you everyone for both the congratulations and your advice!
One thing I forgot to mention is that we must stay within a one mile radius of the hotel. I can not leave the hotel without Riley, although I do not have to be in the same room with him while we are in the hotel. We are sharing a hotel room - should be interesting. There might be group outings to a shopping mall that we can do on the weekends. We also are brought to a laundromat to wash clothes...ah yes the "glamour" of Hollywood! Most of these restrictions are due to security concerns.

Joy: I will definitely be bringing a bunch of scarves now. I was afraid they might be a little too fussy but I was just overthinking the situation.

Angie: There is no way this is fitting into a carryon! I am more concerned with keeping it under the 50 lb weight limit.. I do normally travel carryon only but I'm not militant about it. Some situations just require more clothing! And a Killer! Thank you...you made my day and I owe it all to this wonderful forum and blog! I am not growing out my hair - its just due for a cut and color tomorrow! That is another concern - this hair has to last me the whole 6 weeks. I have spent some time this morning going through my bling and deciding what to use. I can't wear heels - I have Parkinson's Disease and can no longer keep my balance in anything other than flats! As far as bags are concerned - my Longchamps Le Pliage will be getting a workout but I'm going to have to wait and see if anything else fits in the suitcase.

I meant the shopping particularly in case you decide you need something you hadn't thought of. I am much less stressed when I travel to somewhere where it is easy to get what I might need. Also, remember to take whatever you absolutely need on the plane with you. Or travel in it.

Windbreaker or raincoat. It may be dry, it may rain. It rained there less than 2 weeks ago. It can be lightweight, since you have so many layering possibilities. LA weather can be all over the place, and differs by location.

Swimsuit if you have a pool/spa or have a chance to go to the beach. I love the beach. Watching the sunset over the ocean is highly recommended.

Occasionally some star gets photographed in a black outfit that goes sheer/see through on camera. I'm not sure how that happens but can someone advise? Is it only if the item is on the more sheer side to begin with?

I think MsMary is right about stripes-and perhaps the plaid?check? top. Check out what the news people wear and see if they wear them. They have experts that style them for tv. Notice if the women wear color or neutrals. I'd be tempted to say color is best-it will probably help you to look good on camera.

I'd say there are definitely many dress styles in LA depending on where you are and who you are with. But people definitely accessorize, so I wouldn't hesitate to wear what you love.

I always take something cozy when I go to LA. It can run colder at night than people expect. Of course, one of the two times I've been coldest was in Chicago, so it's nowhere near that cold. But things aren't heated the same way. Although it's been 20+ years since I was in Chicago, so that may have changed.

Good luck and have FUN! Should be interesting watching the process, and interesting being the guardian of a 16 year old who is going through it! Looking forward to hearing more about it.

That's cool - what a fun thing to be part of! I like your capsule. I'm not sure I could fit it all in one carry on (esp. with the shoes and jackets) but maybe yours is a bit larger than mine.

I would tend to wear the outfits I am most comfortable wearing - my favorites. Stripes and certain patterns can be a challenge on film.

I live in LA and I think your outfits are great. The only thing that gives me pause is small stripes on TV -- might want to ask the camera operators how they will behave. Definitely bring a lot of scarves, including the wool scarves. We like to pretend we have seasons here so they will be fine.

Scarves don't take up much room so I'd say bring a lot of them. Or even all of them, depending on just how large your collection is. Mine fits into two large ziplock bags so that's kind of my yardstick.

WOW!! First off, I LOVE your outfit--- not to mention your proposed travel capsule, which includes half the contents of my own wardrobe, LOL. I think we have pretty similar taste! :)

Secondly, congrats to your nephew! That is such exciting news.

And how fun for you to go to LA. I hope you still have friends you can visit with.

I know nothing about LA weather or style but maybe it would be a good idea to check out Rae's blog? She lives in the area and might be dressing in a way that works for the temps. http://www.rachelklewicki.com/catchingrae/

I love the idea of bringing a few lightweight neckerchiefs or scarves, but not wool challis. I think Joy is right that you need to try the outfits on and take photos so you will feel less self-conscious on the day, being prepared.

For makeup, try one of those finishing sprays - they help it last longer.

I've been to LA many times (LOVE LA), and YES, people are very casual - but hip. The weather CAN change very unexpectedly. And it's much cooler by the water than inland - especially at night.

I think the little bandana scarf that you are wearing with your outfit adds lots of personality and would include some scarves or statement necklaces. I like the items that you are thinking of packing. Someone could chime in about best colors for the camera. Have you tried on everything and taken photos? The photos may give you an idea about how things will look on camera. Wear more makeup than usual. You already have a great hair style. Are you taking anything dressy, maybe with some bling? Just in case you feel that you need it.
I have enjoyed watching Riley on The Voice and saw him win his knockout round. Best of luck to him.

I mentioned in an Off Topic post a couple of weeks ago that
my 16-year-old nephew, Riley, was a contestant on The Voice. What I couldn’t
say until this week is that he won his final knockout round and will progress
to the “live” portion of the show. Everything leading up to this was taped over
the summer. We are incredibly proud of him, he has only been taking voice
lessons for a little over 2 years and this is totally unexpected!

Unfortunately, and unexpectedly, neither my sister or her
husband will be able to accompany him as his guardian. The production company
flies 2 family members out for each show and they are hoping they will be able
to make it to those. I have been named as his guardian. I knew this was a
possibility but it was only this week that it became a reality.

I have been trying to put together a wardrobe that ticks the
following boxes:

1.
Fits in one suitcase and is appropriate for the
weather over the next 6 weeks. I lived in LA over 20 years ago and I remember
how the weather could go from hot to cool in a day during this time of year.

2.
Is casual yet professional. My sister told me
that everyone dresses very casually and I don’t want to appear overdressed.
However, I am also feeling the weight of looking out for Riley’s best interests
with the production crew. I don’t want to look like a confused, Midwestern mom
if that makes any sense. Yet, this is about Riley, not me, so I also want to
blend into the background a bit.

3.
TV – I’m a private person and the thought of
being on live TV makes me cringe. But…that’s part of the deal, so I
just want to look as good as possible, knowing full well that I’ll probably end
up being shot at an extremely unflattering camera angle anyway!

4.
Budget and time allowances dictate that I use my
existing clothing. There is no time to shop!

5.
I can only wear flats due to health issues at
the moment.

I’ve put together some collection in my finds and I’m
including them at the bottom of this post.

Here are my questions:

1.
The TV capsule: I will probably cut out one of
the tube skirts. Do the tops work for TV and would most of them “go” with the
striped tube skirt?

2.
The casual capsules have been broken down by
clothing type. I have jeans of all sorts, basic t-shirts and light weight
sweater. I then added some fine merino cardigans and light weight jackets as my
third piece. Do these seem to be the correct weights for LA this time of year?

3
I was thinking of bringing some silk scarves and
neckerchiefs to add a little variety. I’m assuming that the larger wool challis
scarves (that I wear in the fall & winter in Chicago) would just be too
much in LA. Does this make sense or are scarves just too fussy for LA?

4
Any advice on good, long-lasting makeup? I may
be out of the hotel for hours and I want makeup that lasts!

I
am also adding a couple of photos of what I wore yesterday as an idea of the
basic look that I think might work.

Wow - I feel like I've written a novel. If you have lasted this long - Thank you! Any help or advice you can give me is greatly appreciated.

1 & 2:an outfit I wore yesterday.
3: casual tops
4: casual bottoms
5: cardigans and toppers
6: tv clothes
7: shoes
