I think Angie is right about them not working for your style. I do love the eggplant colour, tho, for something in velvet.

Thank you for your continuing input, everyone. With more negative reviews coming on the eggplant one including Angie's, I have decided to donate it as well. Even if I end up wearing it, I would always doubt myself and never feel confident in it. It is probably a better idea to carefully consider how much I want a velvet blazer and if the answer is really yes, then maybe try to work one into my limited fall budget. Once I settle on my shopping wish list for fall and figure out just how many pieces I can actually afford, it would all be a matter of priorities.

Tanya I couldn't tell you whether these were dated as I really didn't know! It's good to know that shrunken is an actual look. I definitely know that I vastly prefer the proportions with a longer top, like Diana suggests.

Aside: I saw some navy velvet pants in massimo dutti the other day. I think they were skinnies or cigarette type. Velvet pants are pretty irresistible I like how they're sort of in between dressy and casual.

I agree with Angie. And I'm not exactly sure what's trending, but my inclination is to wear a longer jacket with my cropped flares this fall/winter.

Maybe it's getting at what Diana is saying, that the all-over cropped and shrunken look a la Thom Browne is dated -- or, at the least -- a very specific look.

I've still got some of these types of shrunken Blazers, and I'm planning on keeping mine as they are bar none the most flattering style for my body type and shape. That said I'm mostly going to wear them with dresses and longer, tunic length tops. The look with a shrunken jacket with a short top over pants does look a little dated to me.

Well Angie has spoken, but I also think they are both too shrunken. Yes the eggplant fits better than the teal, but my eye wants to see something different in the fit. whether it be aimed at elegant, retro or edgy.
I vote donate both to open up new possibilities by the vacuum effect! Try styling your pants and see what new toppers ( or other more current ones in your own wardrobe) are looking fab.

I do have an ulterior motive, as I am trying to do more of this myself-- let go without fear I'll regret it, to allow space and imagining for something better.

I think #1 is too small.
As for #2 and second Suz suggestion to try it with the pants (the pants look good). Yes it's way more fitted than the blazers we've seen in stores these last years, but maybe oversized/bf blazers are on their way out and fitted blazers will make a comeback. The fitted shape here looks quite fresh to me, the very high stance...not so much...so I'm on the fence.

I too think that the teal one looks a little dated; I'm not sure why. Maybe it is how it flares out at the bottom? The eggplant one looks much better, and I think it would look fine with on-trend bottoms.

In addition to tonal suggestions, try it as a shorter topper to a tunic. Same concept as the graphic tee, I think: shorter and fitted over longer drape. I like the idea of dressing down with tee/jeans as well as dressing up as a separates suit.

I think it's a great idea to play with the eggplant blazer and see what outfits you can come up with, and if you're comfortable with them. If not, it can join the teal blazer in the donate pile.

It looks that the teal jacket is definitely to be donated, I have already put it in the donation bag. I will play with various styling options with the eggplant jacket once I find some time, and post them here for your review.

I am pretty pleased with the outcome so far as the eggplant jacket is by far my preferred one out of the two and feels much better on.

Perhaps, while you are off in September and have time, try styling it a few ways and see how you feel about it. Yay for the DIY eggplant cropped flares idea.
I held onto a velvet blazer I had in the donate pile a few years ago and revived it by wearing it in very casual outfits with graphic tees and flares. I think you could definitely make the second jacket look quite current.

Tanya, try the eggplant one with the pants as a suit with the pussybow blouse (or similar) and see how you feel in it. It won't be the same as the inspiration and yes it is a lot shorter, but maybe keeping it tonal will mitigate that and you just might love the outfit.

My initial reaction was they are too short, but not short enough to be cropped....

However I have and wear a red jacket with a similar fit, now only one way (with a dress underneath). I keep mine because I love the colour and it is worn, albeit only three or four times a year.

Of the two I prefer the fit of the eggplant one, as it seems to fit very well around the waist area. With a darker top or tonal top under (even blush) and the cropped pants it could be a fun 70s esque look.

While I plan to do my big fall wardrobe closet review in the first week of September, when I am going to take a whole week of work and stay home (yay!), I am starting a bit early doing small bits and pieces. My main goal is to do a thorough analysis of the colors, shapes etc, that are trending in the fall, pick what I like the best, see what of that I already have in my closet and figure out the best way to wear those pieces. Also, to purge lots of stuff from the holding zone that looks like it might never get worn again.

So, one of the main trends for the fall is supposed to be velvet: pants, jackets, shoes, etc. I have these two blazers in my holding zone, one teal (photo #1) and the other eggplant (photo #2). They are both fairly old, but in excellent condition since they have not been been worn much. I am trying to figure out if I could wear either of them this season or donate. Finds 1-3 show some new and current velvet blazer shapes. As you can see, they are longer, have lower stances and 1-2 buttons. Mine are shorter, more fitted and shrunken. The teal is a classic schoolboy shape with 2 buttons; the eggplant is sort-of 70's with three patch pockets, higher stance and three buttons. So, what do you think, are they hopelessly dated or could they worked with modern supporting act cropped jeans, booties etc.? I want brutal honesty, I won't be bothered at all if you tell me to get rid of them, as the goal is to either wear with confidence or donate.

On the positive side, I have matching eggplant flare pants too (photo #3). They are in excellent condition as I never wore them much despite loving them as they were only long enough for flats and in those days you always wore dressy flare pants with heels. So they are one of the pairs that will be taken to the tailored and hacked into uber-trendy crop kick flares ( excuse my bad hem folding in the photo). I have already noticed a couple of different crop kick flares in velvet showing up in the higher end stores ( Find #4)
