@rae: these trousers don't have beltloops; if I want to go cheap on alterations, I'll just have those added instead of slimming the waist :)

@CocoLion: thanks for the encouragement to stay classic! I do think they sit a little low on my waist (and will only go further south as I continue my weight loss) -- I think it's most apparent in the rear view.

I like your current trousers, the fit doesn't look off. I wouldn't tailor them although I might be missing some detail.

I'm not a big fan of the oversized pants, I prefer them in your normal size.

I agree that the baggier fit looks great on you if you want a change! Can you slap a belt on the gray trousers? All my baggy pants would fall off if not for a belt.

The gray trousers (photos 1-4) are a polyester / viscose blend, with 2% spandex for comfort; there's no wool at all. I think the problem may actually be that the weave is rather loose (the salt-and-pepper texture is quite large). They're meant to be dressy, and I've decided to tailor them down to a more classic fit.

With that in mind, I've added 4 new pics of the black trousers, in both my usual size and in 2 sizes up. Is it good enough to be worth overriding my resident stylist? In the past, I've been quite happy (in retrospect) when I've overridden my own unease at a new print/cut/style, but this is the first time I'd be overriding his unease as well.

I think you look fine in all of them, but I like 1-4 the best!

Honestly, not sure it is worth keeping anything that does not agree with your resident fashion consultant. It is hard to love something you know he hates.

I think you wear all the fits well, Hannah! It's hard to see the details of the black fabric in these pics though - so I can't comment all that accurately about fit. But I like what I see in all the photos across the sizes.

Now I'm of no help at all

I think you'd need a taper in the pants for them to fall like a slouchy trouser, and a little more ease as well. #1, if tapered at the bottom, might begin to have a slouchy look. That said, you look great in this style of tailored trousers, which is still a mainstay of a modern wardrobe. Bagging is definitely a result of the fabric blend.

I'm curious to know what the fabric content is of the trousers that keep getting baggier. I've read about this happening before, it was that the fabric kept relaxing and they would get baggier even as the person wore them!
It's hard for me to tell about the fit from your photos - could you post a photo that shows the pants in a more close-up view? If you take them to a good seamstress / tailor they might be able to help you with deciding on a appropriate slim or slouchy fit.
Are your wool blend trousers dressy or casual? I personally like my dressy trousers to have a tailored fit, and prefer a slouchy fit for casual pants. That's just me, take it with a grain of salt

I bought a pair of classic, textured gray trousers about 2 months back. They fit wonderfully at the time, but since then have bagged ... and bagged ... and bagged. I'm not losing weight, I assure you; in fact, I'm worried that they're about to come tumbling off my hips once my annual post-holidays weight loss really kicks in.

Photos 1-3: are these (unreturnable) gray trousers baggy enough to qualify as a trendy "slouch"? Or at least a semi-trendy "baggy"? Or should I stop trying to be cheap and take them to the tailors, to have them altered to a classic fit? Dark colors are hard to photograph, but the crotch point has dropped 1 - 1.5 inches here.

Secondly, I've been curious to try looser-fitting trousers, and now that my budget has reset (I'm on SYB), I pounced on two pairs of black wool trousers. They're identical, just two different sizes. Are either of them worth keeping? Keep in mind that my live-in fashion consultant (*cough* husband *cough*) variously dislikes and hates them, so the YLF feedback on either of these have to be overwhelmingly positive for me to consider keeping them.

Photos 4-6: I sized up 2 sizes (crotch point has dropped 2 inches). I don't think my eye is fully adjusted to the slouchy look; these trousers look neither flattering nor hanging trendily from my hips as they do yours!

Photos 7-9: my usual size. The fit is a bit tight because I'm still shedding holiday weight.

-- ETA photos taken during the daytime. Sorry for the delayed response; I had to wait until the weekend to catch the sunlight!

Photos 10-11: the pants that may be "slouchy"
Photos 12-13: my normal size (again, I'm still up a little bit of weight, but it's falling off at my usual rate, so I'm confident it'll fit fine).
