The fit on the jacket looks great! How is the sleeve length? I love the color, and that's funny that this is a departure from eggplant for you! It looks great, and I won't repeat the good advice you've already gotten. Enjoy!

Great jacket, love the fitted back detail. Also prefer it open (the top button looks a little high when closed to me).

Thanks for the approval on the jacket and I promise not to wear it with the patterned dress. I'll have to do a little more experimentation with the rest of the wardrobe and post some photos.

GP: It's funny you should suggest the eggplant because I already have a trench and cardigan in that color. It is one of my favorite colors, which is why I thought I should branch out a little.

The hem isn't the best sewing job- it's a little wobbly in places, but this was a practice piece. The next one should be a little cleaner.

I chose the teal thread because I didn't have bright yellow or a matching dark blue. I was also concerned that with yellow, the uneven stitching would be too obvious and with a dark blue thread, the eye would be drawn to look closely at something that is almost invisible.

The teal thread is a bit darker than in the flash photograph and gives it (to my eye) a fun color contrast that looks intentional but is close enough in value to the jean color to hide mistakes. I love color, so I couldn't resist sneaking some into an unexpected place, just for my own enjoyment.

Amy, I agree I'm not thrilled with the original hem method because you always end up creating an extra line of stitching on the outside as well as the extra fabric bulk from the fold or seam allowance inside.

Once I can sew a bit straighter, I might experiment with matching the topstitching or going with more interesting, contrasting colors.

I like the jacket open. It's nice! I don't think the hem looks that bad at all It's better than having super long jeans that you can't wear!

That jacket is gorgeous on you!

As for the hem on your jeans, it's fine; however, being a stickler for details, I think it would be nicer if you used thread that matched the color of the topstitching. You can use a heavier upholstry-weight or topstitching thread for the top thread and regular weight thread for the bobbin. I'm not really crazy about that tutorial Isis linked to since it creates a tuck in the hem.

Thanks for the explanation Isis I would think it would get kinda bulky? But neat idea to keep the option of moving the hem later!

Mo, lots of jeans aficionados like the stiching and coloring of the original hem.

Here's how to keep the original hem without cutting. It's actually easier than cutting it off and doing another kind of hem, I think.

http://sewmuchado.blogspot.com.....-keep.html

Plus you can rip it out and re-do if you make it too short or too long!

Love the jacket! I have some jeans hemmed like this. Maybe I'm a dolt, but what is 'the original hem' anyway? I don't sew (obviously) and all I can think is someone cuts off the hem and then reattaches it higher, but that sounds kinda silly . . .

KILLER jacket. I much prefer it open than buttoned-up.

It would look great with a purple top!

The hem is serviceable for sure.

I like the jacket! I am concerned about the hem on the pants. That's a nice hem job, I"m just wondering why you used bright blue thread. I would have used either the same thread as used on other parts of the pants, or a very dark blue that blends into the denim.

The jacket looks like it fits well, but I vote exchanging it for the eggplant color. I think that would really complement your coloring. The teal is OK but it's a little muted and with the jeans and black it's a little too monochromatic for my tastes. I agree the jacket breaks up the pretty pattern on the second dress too much--I would either leave it open, or not wear it with that dress.

The jacket's a lovely colour and looks great, Sylvie! I am with Una, though, on the last skirt/dress; I don't think I'd wear with that. I think you are okay with that jeans hem. I am not a purist when it comes to such things.

The jacket looks fab to me, although I don''t know about it with that second skirt. I love the color, yummy! Nice job on the hem - I'm not a purist on keeping the original hem unless it's somehow integral to the look.

Attempt at expanding the jacket wardrobe with a velveteen jacket in peacock teal.

http://www.loft.com/loft/produ.....ket/262980

1) With jeans (closed/side/back/open)
2) With two dresses

The jacket is unlined but the inside seams are bound. The back pleats give me way more room than I need. I had to size WAY down on this - this is a 0??

Feel free to be brutally honest. Thanks!

3) Also, I hemmed a pair of jeans myself. Does it really look that bad to do a normal hem instead of an original hem? Is anyone really going to inspect the stitching an inch above the ground?
