Gryffin--The styling hasn't done them any favours--they look like bathrobes! oh, duh, bathrobe plus cadigan = blardigan?

Yes, this style and length would be perfect--alas, not in my size. Thanks, though!

No Alana - not a typo!! Welcome to one of my favorite purchases of 2014 the blankie cardigan....http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/ba.....n=Predicti it's really soft, warm and flattering. I have a thread on this and there are several others. I think Goldenpig has this too. Just fyi!!

Inge--never shut up! Heavens, what would I do without you?
I love the Jones New York jacket--and the pants in different colours along with the fine knit vest has the wheels spinning.

Thank you Lucy!

Gryffin--I'll look up Sveta's NAS cardigan. What's a blardigan? (Or was that a typo?)

E--yes, I wanted to show my Mom, but she absolutely loves "costumes" and I was afraid what she might just take upon herself to sew up for me! A lot of it reminds me of Japanese clothing, of raggedy ann, and of what the downtrodden poor wear in movies set throughout the Victorian era. Interesting stuff, for sure--and what interesting origins for the whole wonderful assymetrical look that is now mainstream. I can see where harem pants came from, too.

Aida--I am glad you came to the party too! Washing instructions always welcome. :)

NB: My Mom referred to the printed tunic as "that snakeskin" today--and she didn't mean it as a good thing, lol! Guess I won't wear it to her house for supper. :)

Late to the party but glad I joined! Both of these tunics look super, and I'm particularly smitten with the printed one on you. Lovely! Lots of great advice (and loads of great visuals from Inge!), just wanted to chime in quickly about the viscose: I use the hand-wash setting on my machine, hang to dry, then iron on the lowest setting. That's all

OK, I promise to shut up after this, but I had to show you these grey houndstooth leggings at The Bay, Alana. I absolutely love them for you.

A patterned bomber jacket like the one below could also be fun to wear over your column of black (black H&M tunic and leggings).
The metallic cardigan could work too.
And the striped sweater is a fun one to wear with regular pants and jeans.

I'm just coming back to say that I'm really smitten with this look for you, Alana. And there are so many possibilities (as mentioned by the other lasses too): add a beautiful scarf, an arty necklace, a great (moto) jacket or drapey cardigan. Pair the tunics with bottoms in other colours, add oxfords instead of booties...

For example, I quite like the idea of trying the tunics with a brighter-coloured legging too (it's another way to infuse brighter colours into your Winter wardrobe). Like this one in Royal Teal maybe.
http://www.onestopplus.com/clo.....3&Dep

And I also love the suggestion of trying the tunics with a long woven gilet, knit sleeveless cardigan or arty drapey cardigan when it gets colder.

This cardigan might work with longer-length tunics and will definitely work with regular trousers and regular length tops (thumbs up from me as well to add more high-low hemline or asymmetric tops into your wardrobe).
http://www.onestopplus.com/clo.....#038;Produ
(Deep Purple, Deep Teal, Marine Blue and Merlot all look great)

http://www.onestopplus.com/clo.....38;DeptId=
(in Deep Claret)
ETA: I'm not sure fleece is the way to go, but this type of drapey silhouette will look great with the tunic + leggings look.

Hi Alana - Just wanted to chime in and tell you how fab these outfits are!! I love tunics and I think both of these are uber flattering!! I wear a lot of boots and booties, so I second Angie's advice. Also the black is a perfect back drop for a long pendant, as E said an arty scarf, long vests - like the one Sveta got at NAS would be fantastic if the length was right, for a draped blardigan like cardigan for cooler weather, or a cocoon sweater a la Deborah's recent posts. Such a great elegant, interesting look!! You wear it so well!! Enjoy!!

A big thumbs up from me as well, Alana. I love this silhouette on you.
(ETA: I was just about to suggest trying a dress/long tunic over skinnies/leggings on your other thread, and here you are, already rocking the look:-)

Here are two related looks for extra inspiration:

Gaylene said it all! These look so fab on you! I also have a very close friend who is a similar body type to you and she is one of the most stylish women I know. These outfits remind me of her. She layers so masterfully, and has that arty vibe going on. She wears mostly black and always has a cool arty and colourful necklace on, or a colourful scarf. She has a very strong signature. The tunic and leggings look so stylish and modern and you look really happy and comfortable. I think this could be a turning point in your style.

To echo everyone else, these are great on you! I especially love the marbled look of the patterned one, although the black one looks like a nice base for layering or for pairing with something more dramatic on the bottom or as an accessory. You even look happier in the pictures.

And I'm with you on how it's hard to find space for everything that needs to lay flat to try. It's gotten to the point where I often have to hold a few things back when I'm doing laundry so I don't overload the drying rack.

These look good and you've gotten some good advice.

These fit into the idea of having some great go- to silhouettes that work for you.

But, not to make your head explode with more ideas, Matbe over the coming year can keep an eye out for some asymmetrical- hemmed drapey tops, or shirttail hem, in some tops, like a warmer sweater you may need for winter, that will be more hip length and not tunic, for more versatility.
What those would do, like the tunic but in a different way, is avoid having the horizontal line of the top's hem fall at place you don't like.
I have the same desire to avoid a straight hem right at my low hip line. As a pear, I have trouble with tunics because I don't have the shoulders and chest to fill out a tunic sized for my hip ease. But they work really well for you.
But you may not want to go all- tunics as your only outfit type, , because you may need the warmth of actual pants, and of warmer tops( though there are heavier sweater tunics, of course ). If you look at some pics of sweaters with pointy hems or curved shirttail hems you may find you can get some of the coverage, which I look for, too, but with the elongating effect of the not- straight shape. This may give you another flattering silhouette that works with your jeans and ponte pants.

You seem off to a great start and are figuring things out faster than I did when I started trying to think about modernizing my wardrobe!

Blast, I don't know what happened, but I spent probably a good half hour responding to each of you and your comments. I just noticed it isn't here.
So, let me say, thank you, thank you. It eases my mind greatly that this look is a good one on me. It is good to know that the tapered hem contributes to its ability to flatter. I am glad viscose is not too difficult to care for--though with all this laying flat to dry, I will have to redesign the laundry room to make room for them! I will keep both.

I will ask for styling suggestions when it gets closer to wearing time--say September? It is 30 C again today--this has been one very hot, muggy summer.

Rachy-lou, I purchased a sweater--and it is going back--too big. There were some open mesh things in black--I'm sorry, I don't remember seeing any sweaters--but I'm sure that if tere had been some, I would have noticed as I am on the look out for them.

These both fit beautifully. Gaylene is so right about the all-black being the perfect base. I like H&M's Plus stuff a whole lot. I was browsing the new catalog.

I say - you didn't happen to see any winter sweaters in-store? I'm waiting for them to come in... they hadn't last week...

They both look great.

My local H&M seems to only have a tiny plus size section but the things that I have from there are absolute workhorses.

I like both. How do you feel about them? Do you like these better than the tops you posted in your other thread, where you said you felt bored? I do agree with Gaylene that you do the arty-drapey look well.

I prefer the printed tunic over the black one, if I have to choose. I do feel like the black on black does feel a bit dance-classy, but that's OK. But you probably wouldn't wear it with black leggings all the time, I'm guessing.

I would keep both of them for now but not wear them for a while, so that as you get different components of your capsule, you can try them with other stuff and still see if you want both or just one. It can be really hard building a wardrobe at the beginning, because right now you probably don't know how much you're going to love tunic tops vs. another type of top.

Viscose is breathable. It is a synthetic, but it is made from natural materials (wood pulp). E's instructions on caring for it are very good. I have a lot of rayon in my closet and really like it. And I have a horror of synthetics in general.

These are fantastic! I echo everything that Gaylene said. You look terrific, and I can tell from what you said that the tunics make you happier.

Viscose breathes. It might require more layering in winter because it's not particularly warm, and you do need to treat it with some care, but it's a nice natural fabric.

The print is divine, but I really like both, and you look fab in them! I think either could be the basis for lots of fall/winter looks.
