Yes keep it- I bet you will get a lot of use from it in WI. I find a shorter coat like that is one of my most used. The JCrew Lady Day is an entirely different cut particularly through the shoulders, back, and arms- very narrow from what I remember from trying on. Great if you don't need a lot of layers or use only thin ones but probably a lot more restrictive than what you've found here.

I think you should keep it, honestly. It's gorgeous.

Don't you wear a scarf to deal with the neckline thing? That's what we do up here in the frozen wastes of Canada, LOL.

Lots of layers under, lots of layers over!

I like the lady day coat too but the one without thinsulate isn't warm enough for the likes of our weather.

Traci: Ha! Yes! I wear my coat open a lot. I do like it open ... maybe even more than I like it closed.

Angie: My heaviest layer (shown here) is a top made of a sweatshirt material that's thicker than any of my sweaters, so I thought it was a good candidate for whether I could still move my arms. For our subzero temps, I wear: cami, knit top, additional layer (cardigan, sweatshirt-y top, lightweight knitwear) and a down jacket or wool coat. That's it, otherwise I'll pass out when I'm in a store. If I'm doing an outdoor activity I'll add long underwear, but I'd also wear a different jacket. I think we midwesterners have an extra layer of subcutaneous fat or something. We're also very sure-footed on ice! ;)

I anticipate a wool coat as being something to wear when the occasion calls for something nicer than a down jacket, but also for fall, as it gets cold here mid-October and bringing out the down jacket seems premature. It doesn't have to be subzero warm, just warm enough to get me from car to building and back again.

This is a size 12. No size 10 was available. Wool coats get restrictive through the shoulders, so sizing down sometimes looks a bit better, but feels worse.

Where do you think it looks too big?

(HAHAHAHAHA. I'm glad you helped Smittie find her pockets, Anne).

I'm wondering whether you could have gone a size smaller since you're wearing your heaviest top layer - although it looks like a tee - no?

You can laugh at very cold me. This is what I wear under a coat and I am STILL freezing when temps go below zero:

bra

cami

thermal long sleeved tee

very warm woolly pullover, and sometimes two

leather jacket

wool or puffer coat

scarf, hat, gloves

So I make sure that my heavy duty coats can accommodate all these layers. My lighter weight coats don't layer well with chunky knitwear, but CAN do all the layers.

Coat has great potential.

The belted waist completely works! (It really doesn't work on waistless me...you're lucky!)
The thing I didn't like about my TT coat were the fake pockets. Hopefully yours has pockets, or you don't mind no pockets.

I'm wearing my heaviest top layer underneath the coat. I figured my bottoms are never heavier than denim, so the cut-offs could stay.

Before I found this coat, I was going to wait for J. Crew to come out with their lady day coats. I gravitate toward single breasted coats with collars that I can pop up to protect against elements and camouflage whatever I'm wearing underneath. I've included a pic of the style; ignore the yellow.

I don't like it when what I'm wearing underneath distracts from my outerwear. I like my outerwear to cover it all so I can pop on my coat and look relatively put together without worrying whether my shirt clashes in an open neckline. This Trina Turk coat does have a more open neck, but not as open as other styles. But that's definitely something to consider.

Anne, this looks like a beautiful coat!!

And from what I can see, the fit and proportions are wonderful.

It is difficult to judge when you are wearing summer things beneath. Did you try it with your more wintery clothing? I know that is painful to do at this time of year.

From the evidence of this photo I would say you are quite slender and don't need to worry about added bulk. The question is, do you like a coat that wraps and ties?

I was pumped about last night's Nordstrom Rack purchase here: http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....rack-score

Cold, hard light of day assessment time!

WHAT I LOVE:
I love the feel of this coat and the color.
I love the quality.
I love that it's not entirely wool, therefore not itchy.
I love the back of this coat.
I love the cuffs.
I love the overall design, although the collar doesn't spread out as much like it does in the product photo. I actually prefer that, though. Also, my coat isn't exactly like the one pictured, but it's close. My coat has visible buttons.

BUT ...
I have a hard time judging whether heavy coats (wool, puffers) look good because I feel they automatically add weight to my midsection and bust. Mentally, I tolerate cold weather outerwear out of necessity (I live in WI) and try to find the most flattering of the unflattering.

I can't figure out whether belted waists work or don't work on me. I took the tie off and it looked more matronly, but I can post a picture of that if you all want.

So, what do you think? Like I said, outerwear is really hard for me to judge, so don't take my ambivalence as a reason to return it. I do like it, but could use unbiased opinions.

Picture by an 11 y/o boy because my remote clicker wasn't working.
