Suz, I don't even need to look at the dress to know that just from your post you are trying to talk yourself out of this purchase. If you don't love it now, you probably won't, and that "miracle" occasion that you are saving it for might not happen before you are sick of this dress.

Find a way to send it back and buy something you adore and know you can use in several ways for sure.

Let us know what you do!

Aw, Claire, I DID wear that dress. Did too!!

Admittedly, not as much as I expected. Probably about 5 times a year.

You are so right. Back it goes.

Okay, off the tippy-top of my head (and not having read the other replies) let me say that,

1. Yes, it is theoretically a dress that you could wear anywhere, like your Mum said, but

2. It reminds me an awful lot of another wintery, sleeved floral dress that you had and never wore.

The colors and the print tend to make it less versatile IMO. I had that dark printed BCBG wrap dress which I could never wear much either. The dark colors said Winter to me, the fact that it was a dress meant I was more apt to wear it in Summer, but it was polyester/nylon, with 3/4 sleeves, so that meant Spring or Fall, but the colors weren't too Springy, so that meant Fall, but I was always either hot and sweating in it, or cold, and it didn't receive jackets very well. Yeah, I know what you mean!

Suz, sadly I have missed this whole discussion...where was I? And I see you are returning so for what it's worth I thought I would share my thoughts. I see you are returning and I think that's the wise decision here. The dress is lovely on you, no question. However I find it kind of bland. I know that's odd to say about a patterned dress with colour but I just feel 'something' about it is not quite 'you'. It reminds me of a similar dress I bought (more neutral tones) to wear to a day time wedding. I wore it to the wedding and have not worn it since. My dress is about to be listed on Ebay:) I realised that the dress was just 'too conservative' for me and I feel this actually fits in the same category for you. I am finding it difficult to really articulate what I see but it's the conservative aspect of the dress I think. You deserve to spend your money on something you love so much you want to sleep in it lol xxx

I think this post is a perfect example of why we take care to build wardrobes,
instead of buying beautiful pieces of clothing! We are clothing our
bodies to live our lives as they really are!

This dress needs to earn its place in the closet and do what a dress does best -- stand on its own when necessary, and adapt to changing conditions! Sounds like this dress doesn't quite fit the bill!

I adore the dress, of course, and even in Chicago, this dress would work for me on all but the coldest days in winter. I run warm, and my work environment is quite warm -- even the church is. Both DH and I were fanning ourselves while singing the Gloria Patri this morning! Of course, being an Opera Diva, I'm an expert at fanning while singing, having perfected my one handed fan-slap in Traviata!

BTW, I was able to return some sandals to Nordstroms that I'd had for four months but had never worn. They are wonderful.

Return it. Any clothing item that causes you this much doubt and questions about how/where/when to wear it - to me, means it's not going to work in your wardrobe. I'm of the belief that when you buy an item it should seamlessly fit into your wardrobe and lifestyle (without having to think too hard about it) - and this dress is not doing that for you.

ETA: Oh, I see that you are returning it. Good call!

I have enjoyed reading this thread Suz!
It is helping me to understand why I too have a dress that looks great but remains unworn, for different reasons.
We have an Aussie version of Nordstroms, but they recently changed their return period to 30days only. I am glad you will be able to return yours and spend the money on something more suitable.

I think the dress is really pretty. The cut and fit are of course flattering.
However, the print isn't working for you. I think it's too ladylike. It could be made to work but I am coming around to the view point that a piece should stand on its own and you should not have to work that hard to make it you. I hate to be the nay sayer but I think this is the primary reason it's still sitting in the closet with tags on.

I have a couple of dresses I keep for weddings, fantasy movie premieres, and so on. I could easily hoard such items but it makes no sense.

This dress looks fab on you and meets that kind of standard, but you have to love it and feel perfect for those occasions.

If you're not dying to wear it otherwise, I'd return and put the money to something more useful.
I have returned many an item that technically was perfect but either had no use or didn't sing to me. Seems counter-intuitive that something could look so fantastic on us and yet not steal our hearts - but it happens.

If you have not worn it yet when the weather was pretty right for it (September and half of October) then your heart is not with it. Thanks God for Nordie's generous return policy this would be just a shopping mistake and not an EXPENSIVE shopping mistake.
Onward and upward!

Suz, this dress is amazing on you! And your mom is right about its versatility: you can dress it up or down! I own a few dresses like these (though I have a romantic and slight bombshell influence to my style) and I've managed to style them and dress them down for my casual work environment.

I'm with Janet: I can see a denim jacket and booties with this outfit. Leather moot jackets can work with this too, to give it an edge. If you want to be a bit formal, top it up with a tailored black blazer. Basically if you change the toppers and the accessories, you can easily change the vibe of the dress!

So I vote KEEP due to its versatility and how amazing it looks on you!

Yes, Angie -- I agree. I adore it in theory and I hope I won't regret sending it back, but at this price, I can find a great suit jacket and I know I'll wear that to death. So....
Thank you all for your help!!!

No ----- you know what? Angie and Sveta have hit on it. The window for wearing this dress is transitional weather in my climate: fall and spring, essentially. Someone who worked in an office might even wear it in summer, but I can't because I don't have air conditioning and live in a hot-summer climate.

I don't like the way this dress looks layered up for winter. I like it to stand alone. Maybe with a coat, but otherwise on its own. And it's just not warm enough to do that in our winters. I'd have to compromise on footwear and hose; I'd have to wear a topper and a slip underneath...it just won't work.

The Kamalikulture dresses are similar, except I do have toppers that I can wear with them, so that extends their wear season by just enough. Also, they look better with my booties and boots than this one does. So they have just a bit more versatility.

Hmmm.

After reading your last comment, I do think you should return the dress. You're just not as positive about it as you should be to love it for that price point.

I wonder if Angie has a point about the price tag holding you back. That's something I could see myself doing...because the cost is higher than my usual, I make it a more special occasion dress in my mind. Just ask yourself "if this dress cost $90 would I think about it differently?". I think it's a beautiful dress and I think it is subtly alluring on you because of the beautiful fit and color on you. I like some of the other's suggestions of toppers and boots. But I think you know yourself pretty well so I'm sure you'll make the right decision.

These are all super points and really helpful.

Let me try to address them, and I'm also going to try to take some more pics with some styling options this afternoon.

Angie and Sveta raise a good point -- I wore the Kamalikulture dresses already, so why not this one? Is it price? Well...it could be. But I don't think so. It is just that touch dressier than the Kamalikulture ones...and more ladylike. The Kamalikulture dresses are more body con and stretchier than this one and for some reason that makes them feel more casual.

I think what's held me back from wearing is the combination of fabrication weight (neither here nor there for my climate) and level of dressiness.

I bought this dress because I had NO sleeved winter dresses in my closet. None. Since then, I got the David Meister dress. And now, in comparison, this one feels too insubstantial without slip and topper for our winters.

Also, there is the hose issue. Sheer hose are not warm enough in our winters. And tall boots don't look great with the dress...or at least my tall boots don't. And finding tall boots is a tall order for me!

I don't think it works with either of my leather jackets. In fact, I don't have any toppers it looks good with. The best would probably be my denim jacket. But it's not even great with that.

Angie, I was explicitly thinking about my stepson's wedding when I bought this dress -- and I would like to wear it then. But even there...it's the hose that present a problem. Inside I can probably wear sheer nude. But but but....you know how cold it gets in these parts.

And then I think -- one wear for the year? Okay...maybe I'd wear it at Christmas, too. But that would probably be it, and I could easily come up with other alternatives to wear for those events.

Still, sleeved dresses in my colours in nice fabrics are as scarce as can be! So I don't want to give it up without a fight. ;-)
