:)

I promise, it gets easier with time. Once you find your makers, and once you get straight on your own personal wardrobe essentials, it will all start to fall into place a lot better. I was in pretty much constant despair my first year at YLF. Starting from scratch is TOUGH and even tougher when you face fit challenges, which most of us do in one way or another. Being in Canada adds an extra layer of challenge (not as many options). And of course needing to stick to a budget means the process goes more slowly than many of us would wish. But it all comes together eventually.

Oh Alana, it's our pleasure.

And so fun to hear you were already looking into light grey jeans. I've found that they are not easy to find. But I did see a moto-style pair at Old Navy (photo below). They are a bit darker, but I'm thinking that mid-grey might work too.
NJDJ is pricey but good-quality I believe and often great fit, so definitely worth exploring.

A few more ideas:

http://www.onestopplus.com/clo.....&pref

Oh my. It must be close to that TOM because I feel all weepy with gratitude to Suz, Inge and ElizabethP for providing me with so much.

What a great explanation, Suz. Structure = bone structure--that makes a lot of sense! Amazing how a hair cut can make such a difference. You know, this whole metamorphosis started with a hair cut a couple of years ago. (Well, that and getting my ears pierced, finally, at 48). I am reminded of the time I posted a picture of myself in a turtleneck--I looked "off" somehow. So much to think about--thank you.

Oh, Inge, I know what I will be doing this evening when I get home from work. Look at all these links and suggestions! My goodness. You know, I have a pair of light grey NYDJ on hold for me at The Bay (I have until Saturday) and I am so glad you have provided more options here. They are a very pricey pant!

And Elizabeth--if you hadn't decided to add your sweet words of encouragement, I might not have seen this for days! So, thank you 2x over.

... continued:
I love the idea of brighter coloured (and patterned) tops for you to wear in the darker Winter months (that always cheers me up for sure). And I also like the idea of adding a lighter or brighter wash jean into the mix. Blue denim is fab, but a light grey jean would be lovely too (and will also work with your colour palette).

I'm adding some suggestions below:-)

Alana, you've already received such excellent advice above. I just wanted to chime in and say that I especially love that shade of green on you, but totally agree that if you don't feel excited about wearing your new purchases, then it might be better to keep looking for something that truly makes you happy.

Some more thoughts: I really love these posts in which Angie explains that not every item in our closet needs to be exciting or a statement piece. We all need wardrobe essentials around which we can build complete outfits (that was a lightbulb moment for me):

http://youlookfab.com/2009/03/.....be-basics/

http://youlookfab.com/2012/08/.....ssentials/

http://youlookfab.com/2013/02/.....ping-list/

Brick-and-mortar store shopping can be frustrating for sure when the stores only have limited options (size-wise, colour-wise etc.). Here are a few sites that you can browse online (perhaps you already know them):

http://www.eloquii.com

http://www.modcloth.com/shop/plus-sizes

http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/.....nk=8551007

http://carmakoma.com/en/

http://euro.evansfashion.com/?geoip=home

http://www.karenkane.com/store.....view-all-2
(often great options for drapey silhouettes)

Yup. well....Angie's body type recommendations (and others that I found) were the start. I really had no clue what actually looked good on me and I am still learning the fine points as I go.

I think the first lightbulb moment for me was when I cut my hair. I had mostly worn my hair short (most of my life) but just prior to joining YLF had grown it out to an almost shoulder length, a bit longer than your current hair. And I was really having a hard time getting dressed then.

Anyway. Angie told me to cut my hair and all of a sudden the tops that had seemed to work with longer hair looked hideous on me! Meanwhile, my old favourites (like turtlenecks) finally looked great again.

It changed the proportions entirely. I needed to figure it out.

so...."structure in shoulder or neckline.." --- Angie talks about this a bit. She is quite rigorous for herself in never wearing a shirt that exposes the shoulder-neck point (where the shoulder joins the neck) -- which is sort of the OPPOSITE of what will work for you.

I'm not quite as strict on this for myself (my neck is not quite as long and slender as hers and my head is longer relative to my height than hers, so the proportions are a bit different).

But I face similar issues. Long neck, short hair, small bust, generally small frame...if I expose too much chest it can: 1). look bony and yuck; 2). show how little there is to expose, LOL; 3). slide around in a very annoying way; 4). mess up my overall proportions, making me look sort of bobble headed. Or even more short-legged than I actually am, because the top portion will look so LONG by comparison. Like Alice in Wonderland when her neck stretches out, you know? :)

Well, except she has the long hair to help disguise the problem.

ETA: my age also plays a role here. In my younger years, even if I was relatively slim, I could expose more chest area without it looking "bony." Now, not so much. Partly this is related to weight changes due to exercise, etc. and partly weight distribution changes purely due to age. Alas. Anyway. You get the idea.

The terminology might be a bit confusing because Angie often uses the word "structure" when she's talking about exposing skin and here I am talking about not exposing skin. But as I understand it, "structure" means highlighting the frame, i.e. the shape of the body, the bone structure. So for different body types, different cuts will provide structure. And the cut that is just too loosey-goosey for me (slides around or overwhelms me, thereby hiding me) will be excellent at providing structure for a person with a different body type.

Returning to you for a moment, you will wear open necked styles beautifully. (Like those new tunics). They won't swamp and muffle you. They will show you and allow you to shine.

Theoretically, you might be able to wear cutaway collarless coats and jackets. (See the Theory Lanai for an example). Or -- if you wanted to belt, you could wear a wrap dress. And you can wear the very drapey styles like some of EF's cardigans and tops. Fluid with open necklines.

Whereas I will do best with a high collar (turtleneck, shirt collar, mandarin, or crew). If I do wear a V neck, it needs to be quite narrow. I can wear a boat neck but it should not dip too low in front. Set in sleeves are often best, although I can get away with raglan sleeves if the neckline is a good one. And so on.

How I figured it out? I tried stuff on and took pictures. In fitting rooms. In my own house (with tags still on so I could return). I paid attention to what I kept on reaching for and what I ignored. I studied the photos as dispassionately as I could. Sad that some things just wouldn't work on me. Glad that others made me feel more like myself. And so it goes. I'm working through the same process now with pattern and with degrees of contrast in outfits. Learning as I go. :)

Thank you, Suz. I appreciate the explanation--I also am in awe of your knowledge of what looks good on you. For example, "structure in the shoulder and neckline" first, what does that refer to and second--how did you figure that out?
Anyway, these are largely rhetorical questions, as I need to have them actually answered for myself. :)

Angular drape - as I understand it -- it's like an asymmetrical top that angles in one direction vs. a waterfall cardigan, for example.

The softer drapey looks that Deborah in Oz wears often appeal to me aesthetically but I can't carry most of those silhouettes off, myself. I don't fill out the clothing enough to give it life.

Example of something else that looks awful on me: soft cowl neck. You would THINK it would be good (adds volume to my nonexistent bust). But in fact, it just kind of "hangs" there all droopy. So a soft cowl type shape would count as rounded drape, to me.

I can definitely wear fluid fits, and fluidity through the mid-section and waist surrender works really well on me...but there needs to be a fair bit of structure around the shoulder and/ or neckline. And I need to combine the fluid item with something firmer and crisper. An entire outfit of knits is rarely good on me unless the bottom is very tapered, like a tube skirt or skinny pants.

And any neckline that looks good on you would be yuck on me. Lucky you -- you can wear collarless styles, Vs, etc. Make the most of it!

I have not ordered online from Mango, either, but it does look like the clothes are great. You might need to register to order first. When I pull up the site it offers the option to online shop just like any other online retailer -- you click on the item, size, colour, and put it in your "shopping bag." Free delivery and returns on orders over $150. (You can always order more than you think you want and return what you don't want.)

Suz--what is angular drape?
I had a look at Mango. I can't figure out how to order from their site.
Thanks for the encouragement. It means a lot know that you experimented a whole lot--and I think that's great.
Transcona Shannon--again, thanks for the encouragement. I confess this last shopping trip has confused me about my direction. I quess I'll have to live with the confusion for a while.
BethL. Thanks for liking the green sweater. I actually painted my kitchen cabinets that colour. I appreciate the boost.
Angie--I am glad I can make you smile.

Alana, you've already received so much good advice, so I'm going to be one of your cheerleaders. You're doing great, and I think you're really brave. Rock on! FWIW, that forest green top looks lovely on you and, to me, doesn't read boring at all. Black ponte pants are a mainstay in my wardrobe; there's so much you can do with them.

Ok first of all - don't you DARE get down about this wardrobe building! It takes time and patience. Believe me. I've been on YLF for almost four years and I finally feel like I've figured out a few things - and I still question a lot. Coming here makes us pickier and less likely to "settle" for less than perfect. And that can lead to shopping frustration. But in the end, you find yourself with a carefully curated closet that you want to hug. So hang in there :)

We all need some basics in our wardrobe to build outfits off of. I have a few pairs of "boring black pants" and the like. They are necessary. It's what you pair them with that takes them out of that boring range - at least IMHO.

I applaud you tremendously for going out and trying on items and finding what fits and works for your body. We all have different fit issues and finding a brand/designer that "gets you" can be difficult but oh so rewarding when it happens.

My Bay doesn't sell Eileen Fisher but I know the larger cities do. If it's not too much trouble you may want to venture in to try on some of her items and see about the fit. True, not inexpensive. But as Suz mentioned, once you figure out the size for you, you can eBay many current items. Because my city doesn't carry EF anywhere, I have to rely on ordering.

The first year of YLF had me buying and returning a TON of stuff. I didn't know what I wanted, what fit properly and I kept trying to emulate other Fabbers' style. It took me a while to realize I can't buy the same items as XXX because I don't have that same body type and I don't live that kind of lifestyle. Once I embraced ME, then the fun started.

Chin up - we're here to hold your hand along the way.

P.S. I think you look SMASHING in that green pullover :)

Alana, the Bay also carries Eileen Fisher. I think some of her pieces might combine the classic with the drape in a way that would appeal to you. And once you know what fits, you can order via ebay, like Shannon does. At a much lower price point. Trying on in the Bay might feel a bit less intimidating.

I love what you have done in going into the stores to find out if they carry Plus. That is step one. Finding the manufacturers and retailers who "get" your body. This is KEY!!! Once you have ruled a bunch out, you can then rule a bunch in.

Another option -- Angie mentioned the Mango plus line the other day. They do online retailing. Worth a look?

When I began at YLF I spent about a year feeling full of despair and confusion, convinced that my wardrobe would never fall into place.

Like you, I always had a tendency to go for classic items. Partly out of practicality. And partly because something in me was genuinely drawn to them. But they bored me half to death.

For a while I wanted to go the "drapey" route and find a more avant garde style expression. So I experimented with that. As well as with some arty and "retro" pieces, and even some steampunk looks!

In the end, I came back full circle to a fairly classic style -- the difference being it includes a big injection of MODERN. I now look for angular drape vs. voluminous or round drape (because it works better on me, personally) and counteract my classic style with a sharp contemporary haircut, specs (when worn) and also the coolest footwear I can find (and wear in whatever weather conditions I'm facing.)

These days, I feel like hugging my closet -- almost every piece in there is literally a "favourite" and I look forward to occasions to wear it all.

You'll get there, too. Promise.

Jen W--that's great to hear--I hope you will be able to put together a post asking for advice. It's an incredible education!

Beth Ann--ooooh I love those cobalt jeans--and that red with the white ensemble. Nothing depressing about those outfits! You know, you've reminded methat along with learning what I want in terms of a wardrobe--I am just learning how to shop--and where! On Monday, I walked into the j.crew outlet, an H&M, a Danier Leather, and a Gap outlet with one question: Do you sell plus sizes. In every case the answer was No. (Of three H&M locations, only one carries plus.) So, I am feeling a bit like things are scarce--and that never leads to good decisions. That's why I am so grateful to be able to come here and post for some sober second thought.

As well, you are right--I think I may need to slow down a little right now. Let things gel a bit. Still, this week I have the chance to get out--last week, because of my work hours, I did not. That's driving me, too. My husband and I share the vehicle--so I only have it in the evenings.

Alana, have you ever considered trying on Eileen Fisher stuff *just for kicks* to see how you like arty drapiness on your body?

I have a tendency to buy really boring *practical* stuff, too. But I'm learning that more memorable stuff makes me happier and is just as, if not more versatile! Seems counter-intuitive. My most versatile summer topper has turned out to be the foiled linen one I tried on a whim after emptying it from my Wish List a number of times. Just as metallic shoes go with lots of stuff, so does a metallic jacket!

Wardrobe building is tough and a lot of work. Please remind yourself that new stuff is coming out every week, so if something doesn't excite you now, something may in a week or three. You don't want to peak in your purchases too soon!

Wow--I hadn't meant to be such a debbie downer. Sorry about that!

Here's part of my problem: somehow I keep reaching for "American classic" pieces--and when I put them on--I am bored. All my life these have sort of been the standard for "well dressed" in my world--but meh. I am attracted much more to Caro in oz's looks--all that artistic drape--than I am to what I am purchasing.

Another is choice. I was at H&M tonight and I can't wait to show you what I found! But, heartbreakingly, I can't show you what else I found which was a top, cut like a scoop neck T-shirt with a lot of stretch--and arms that were tragically too small for me. I went from 2x to 3x (there weren't any 4x) and they had them in about four different colour ways--the blue-green was so gorgeous it made me weep to have to leave it there. (I'm exaggerating, but not by much.) It is not on-line or I would show you.

unfrumped--I am sorry to be so ambivalent--but you have given me great feedback, nonetheless. I was thinking the argyle pattern thingy would be a great layering piece--I run very warm. I don't know what to think of the sweater anymore.

E--thank you! You are so sweet to me. I am going to evaluate these pieces in light of the clothes I bought tonight.

Joy--I hug you right back. That is excellent advice. I do not want to buy things just to tick off the boxes on my list of things to buy for my perfect capsule wardrobe--and yet, I love ticking off the boxes, lol! I may have got myself a little too caught up in that.

Aubergine--I am glad you like the green sweater. There comes a time in the middle of January when it is too cold to wear anything but a sweater like this--and preferably with a sweater over it. The green may well remind me that summer is coming. Thanks, I do like the argyle top for layering. I bought a skirt this evening thinking the two might go together well, so I will play a little more before deciding. That grey looks almost pink beside my grey things--I like it.

Gigi--good point. As I mentioned in my comment to Joy above, I may be getting caught up in ticking off my boxes: warm sweatertowear in January, tick. Layering top for the whole grey 4x4 capsule....tick. I especially appreciate the encouragement to be patient. I really am not a very patient person! Light denim, eh? Hmmm. These--from H&M might be worth trying. I can't remember if they were there.

Shevia--accessories would be great if I actually wore these anywhere someone would see me without my winter coat. Does that make sense? Nonetheless, I love the idea of scarves. I'm afraid with my proportions I am just asking for the ice cream cone look to manifest itself--but whatev. I do like dangly earrings, too. :)

Gaylene, thank you. It isn't everyday someone tells me I am pretty. (blush).
Shoes--yes, I feel the need for some interesting "at home" shoes. I saw some plaid out of the corner of my eye at the mall this evening. Plaid moccasins would be hilarious. But no, I am kidding. Arty and fluid--I think I want to try that route for a bit--see what happens. I did pick up a couple of things at H&m tonight that were very reasonable in price--even if not the best of quality. I don't mind that--in fact, it's probably a good idea at this stage of wardrobe building. I am so lucky in that I do not need even 20 pieces to make this work. I need to remember that when I balk at the prices some of these arty/fluid things cost.

Thank you my friends.

The first (and probably only) rule of YLF is to have fun with fashion! You've made great strides recently, and are probably just a bit unnerved to imagine what you will wear when the snow flies. Yes, cold climates require practical choices but, unless you intend to roll in the snow sans topper, I think you can afford lighter and/or brighter items on top! Also, I love my cobalt jeans and wear them all winter long, too. Because many winters are cold, but not always snowy (except for last year), I wear white jeans in winter too, and lots of teal, burgundy, and cobalt on top to mix into my black and grey.

Only keep what you want to wear over and over again -- this is particularly important if you desire a small wardrobe!

BTW -- I really like the first pair of pants. I also really like the argyle top (I'd wear this over my cobalt jeans). The green is lovely, but I can't tell the weight of it. Would it be warm enough on it's own?

I understand your frustration! I've been in wardrobe building mode for so long just getting basics covered. I'm now getting to the interesting part and feel confused and uncertain with my purchases and direction. So many returns as I experiement with this part! I think it's a normal stage and keep trying to be gentle with myself. And comparison with others never makes me feel better. Especially if I compare myself to people who have been studying style with Angie's guidance for much longer. Kind of like a mom comparing her newborn to a three year old. Instead, how about you line up the photos from your 3 shopping posts in chronological order and compare against yourself? These choices seem closer to the inspiration photos you shared in one of your shopping posts. I think you are getting closer to your look. And I really admire your willingness to put yourself out there. You've been inspiring me to take photos and maybe even venture a post!

Hmm, Alana, you are too pretty to wear clothes that bore you.

As others have pointed out, you look good in the outfits you've posted, but, if they make you fall into a deep depression, it's time to figure out how to tweak the pants/top formula to make it more uniquely yours. A pair of interesting pair of shoes or distinctive piece of jewelry might let you inject more of your own personality into the outfit. Or, if it's the formula that is getting stale, maybe you need to consider varying the style, not just the color, of your tops--for example, trying an open-knit sweater over a cami or wearing a longer tunic with an asymmetrical hem. If the whole idea of pants and a top is making you yawn, maybe it's time to go in a different direction like pairing your tops with a black knit tube skirt or playing around with an arty, more fluid look.

Finding clothes that fit can be frustrating and time consuming, but it's still only one aspect of wardrobe building. It's just as important to explore what styles, colors, and shapes make you happy. A good wardrobe ought to make you feel good as well as look good.

Maybe you should focus on accessories to brighten up your winter look? or bags? or shoes? Then you can just buy what seem like boring (but not blechy!) basics and dress them up.

I think that everything here looks good, but if you find it boring, I would certainly consider returning it. I am in Joy's camp: I built a wardrobe from scratch and bought stuff just to have categories and capsule components covered, and I wish I hadn't. I ended up consigning most of what I bought after just a year. If you're not excited to wear it *right now*, then that's usually a sign that it's not a good buy, no matter how cheap.

I have a huge problem with the dark wardrobe for fall and winter too. I discovered it last year when I started actually wearing my purchases, which included hardly any light-colored tops or bottoms. Good for you that you have recognized this before actually getting into the season! I would start prioritizing finding lighter-colored tops and bottoms. Maybe exchange one of the dark bootcuts for a lighter-colored pair of jeans? Even though light denim might not be in your capsule color palette, it goes with everything.

And just to let you know...when you're a hard-to-find size, it can take an enormous amount of time and energy to build a just-right wardrobe. So don't worry if you're having difficulty; it's to be expected. Patience is very important. I wish I had had more patience when building my wardrobe.

I'm with everyone else in not seeing boring at all. But it looks like you've gotten some good advice upthread about possible directions to go to find things that call to you a little more.

I especially love the dark green sweater on you. It's so vibrant and sets off your coloring so well.

The argyle is a nice, bold pattern and seems to work really nicely on you. How does it look under the gray cardigan? It seems like, for fall/winter, this top is probably something that would get more wear layered with something warmer than worn alone. Unless maybe you have a pretty high cold tolerance.

Both pairs of pants look like they fit you well too. (They seem like they might be a little long, but that's pretty easy to take care of.) Would it be worth it to maybe hold onto them for now if you're looking to expand your pants options, but also keep looking? That way, you could keep an eye out for options that speak to you a little more, but without the pressure to buy the first thing you kind of like just to have something.

Alana, please don't keep anything that you doesn't make you feel fabulous and want to wear it as much as possible. If you can't find light colors to lighten your wardrobe, what about brights? Maybe a sweater in your best shade of pink, coral, or turquoise to feel lighter? Everything that you are showing us here looks good on you but you don't sound very enthusiastic about it.

I built a wardrobe from scratch and my biggest mistake was buying things just to fill it. It is better to buy one thing that you really love than 4 things that work but are ho-hum for you. There will be more items coming into stores, more sales, more choices. Hugs

Oh Alana! Your clothes aren't boring. But if you feel boring in them, maybe you need to figure out a way to add an eclectic/quirky flavour to your style. Perhaps add tops with more details, if those are possible to find? Otherwise, try out some accessories. What about chunky necklaces or earrings? Or scarves, if you're a scarf person (I'm not: I almost never remember to wear them, unless it's cold out & I'm wearing it for warmth)? Oh, or a vest/waistcoat? Do you have any jackets, the kinds worn as toppers (vs outerwear)? I try to always add a 'third piece' so that it feels more like an outfit (to me): have you tried styling your outfits with a third piece? I think Angie calls them completer pieces.

I think you look really nice in both of these tops (love the argyle print & that delicious green), but if you don't want any more dark clothes, and you're unhappy with them before the tags are even off, maybe they're not for you? Or maybe you just need to play with them a bit more?

I remember on another k/r thread, you posted some inspiration pieces that had a lot more drape & movement and seemed more arty than modern classic. Did you get to try any of those on?

Hmmm... you'll have to keep interpreting your enthusiasm level--as in, do you want to be talked OUT of something or INTO it? Not that it's a game, of course but partly I want to know what you want and need and how soon and so forth.
So, sometimes I'm looking at an item for myself and I'm going, so dark, where's the color, and then I say, well, put that on the List--need tops in colors that may me look and feel alive.
That said, the argyle top has a nice brightening effect and I like it, with the slim bottoms. It would go with your gray cardigan but provide a nice pattern amongst the neutrals. Short-sleeved doesn't sound wintry, but maybe okay for layers.
The green sweater is kind of meh to me, as in, nothing special about the color, or the neckline, or drape. If I were able to keep looking, I'd look for some "love" features like a great color makes you feel fab in winter ,, maybe the V or shawl neckline that looked so good on you, curved or asymmetrical hem, or something.

Suz, I know!
About the jeans--yeah, I need these like I need a hole in the head, but by buying them I saved 25% on everything else. Or something. I don't remember the details.

Okay -- first off, if the clothes bore you already, do you really want to buy them? I know you are starting from scratch and you need something to wear, but at the price of feeling unhappy?

Plus, I completely hear you on the dark thing. Drives me nuts. But what to do? It's really hard to find anything in our winters that is not dark. Feh.

Having said that, I actually quite like all these items. The argyle top doesn't seem boring to me. And it's nice to have pants in two silhouettes. Just wondering if you want two dark boot cut denim. That might be a place to try to make an adjustment.

This time it was two pairs of pants--one black sort of ponte knit pant with narrow ankles and a pair of black jeans --boot cut, I think you call it?

Two tops--one elbow sleeve, argyle print front. Solid black back. But, in keeping with the comments about high contrast I got last time, maybe this works better?

The second top is a sweater. Forest green! I don't mind the back being different here...maybe because the green feels more like a contrasting panel on the front than the entire front (even though it is.) That probably doesn't make any sense.

I will say this. These are very boring clothes. So boring I almost want to scream with boredom. And dark. I don't want anymore dark clothes. blech.

Assuming we keep everything here, this brings the fall/winter casual MOTG days-off-only-errand-running-lounge-around-the-house wardrobe capsule to
4 bottoms: 2 denim, (both bootcut, one dark blue, one black) 2 knit pants, one grey, one black.
1 cardigan, grey. (I have other navy cardigans already)
1 sweater (this one)
2 tops, both grey. (One plain, one patterned)

Pic #1: black knit slim ankle pants with grey "argyle" elbow sleeved top, front view.
#2 side view of above
#3 bootcut black jeans with forest green/charcoal grey sweater front view
#4 side view.

sorry for the crappy photos.
