I posted a play-by-play summary of my internal running commentary about the plaid pants on this thread:
http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....commentary
I'm reposting it here so I can have it bookmarked on my thread to remind me to be more careful the next time I go crazy for the next hot trend! ;-)

"Let's see what Angie is posting about today. Oooh! Plaid skinny pants! Wow! The red ones look so cool! I've got to get some! "
"But you don't need plaid skinny pants."
"I could wear these with my moto-style peacoat and black lace-up boots!"
"In what universe would you actually wear these?"
"I could wear these on the weekends for MOTG. Or maybe with a black sweater to work?"
"Yeah right! This doesn't go at all with your style. Demure bombshells do not wear plaid skinny pants."
"But I can shake things up! Who says I have to be a DB all the time? I want to be a punk rock UWP like Una! And she's getting a pair..."
"You are not an urban warrior princess. Remember what happened the last time you tried that?"
"You mean the Heed sweater that Una and Rae looked so cool in?"
"Yes, the sweater that made you look like you were wearing a loincloth. That one."
"Well MaryK rocked it too, and she is a bombshell like me!"
"MaryK can make anything look good. You looked silly. You were too embarrassed to even take a picture of yourself wearing it before you returned it!"
"Well this is different. I think it'll look good on me and it'll be fun to try it!"
"OK, if you want to look like a lumberjack wearing pajamas..."
"Let's order it from ASOS and just try it. Free returns if it doesn't work."
"OK but DH is going to laugh at you when he sees you wearing it. Remember what happened with the faux fur and the animal print?"

(Two weeks later...)
"The plaid pants are here! Yay!"
"Hmm, they feel so stiff and thin and cheap! Weren't these really expensive? They're premium jeans price but they feel more like your Old Navy jeans!"
"Lemme just try them on."
"The rise is too low. Hello muffin top."
"I'll just pull it up a little. (Hitch hitch jiggle jiggle) I think it's OK if I cover it up with a cashmere sweater and the peacoat."
"You know those pants are going to be sliding down all day and taking your underwear down with them."
"But look how cool I look with my moto jacket and black boots! Eighties punk rock princess! Yeah! And check out the rear view! I look hot!"
"But what's going on in the front with the crotch? Is that CAMELTOE?"
"No I think it's just the print placement. Maybe no one will notice."
(Posts pictures on YLF)
"Dang, everyone is talking about your crotch."
(Returns pants immediately)
"OK, I got that out of my system. That was fun while it lasted. Hmmm...let's see what Angie is posting about today. Oooh! Striped midi dress. Wow! The orange one looks so cool! I have to get one!"

(Tune in tomorrow for more of Goldenpig's fashion adventures on the next episode of As YLF Turns...)

Just wanted to say that I really liked the pants in outfit #1, but that you are right to return these due to fit issues. This doesn't mean plaid or tartan pants are out of the picture though - honestly, I thought they looked great with the black jacket in photo #1, and it's just that the fit of these particular pants wasn't quite right. I think you could wear some plaid or tartan pants beautifully, it's just that you'll have to find the right fit.

Claire, LOL, I think I got the plaid fix out of my system for now. I think I posted about this before, but every time I see something fab on someone else I am so easily tempted to try it out myself regardless of if it fits my style persona or not. Especially when Una or Rae or the other RATE/UWP stylistas post something...it's not my style but I'm fascinated by the look and want to try it. I don't have a problem trying something new but I have to be more disciplined or get more experience to know what will work on me before I buy!

Yes Natalie, the print lines up funny at the crotch point, creating a kind of....hmmmm....lion's or cat's mouth shape. Not actual cameltoe, but the suggestion of it comes from the pattern. Good call to return.

Sometimes I get my "fix" for trying a new trend just by doing a purchase, bringing it home and trying it on for pictures. Often they don't even make it to the forum, and I'm able to get it out of my system and return it! Maybe this will be the case for you? Or do you feel like you need to pursue plaid pants?

I agree with all of you. I like how it looks from the back, but the front crotch looks funny (I still think it's mainly due to the unfortunate print placement, but it could be too tight as well). And it's too expensive for the quality. And too low rise for me. So back it goes. Oh well, fun to try on a new persona for a little while!

I was going to vote yay as a fun alternative until I took a second look and noticed the odd crotch pulling (before I read other's comments) and then I checked the price. I realize everyone has a different price point, but I would want pant that cost over $100 to be perfect.

Adorable from the rear, but the front/crotch gets my attention wondering what's going on there. . . !
I tend to agree with Lantana and Rae about it's a super fun twist, but a smaller plaid would probably be more flattering in front and how you've put together such a marvelous wardrobe, this throws a major curve into it - will you wear them once the holidays are past? (I gravitate toward red through Christmas, then don't love it again until summer red arrives!)

Helen--thanks for the boost. They are fun pants!

Cocolion--Ugh, I was wondering if anyone would notice that! I was going to ask if it made me look like I had cameltoe, but I thought maybe it might be too crude to bring that up, LOL! So I thought I'd just see if anyone commented. I think it might be due to the print placement. But I am also wondering if the low rise is going to be a problem. I have tried on and rejected lots of low-rise skinnies because I have to keep hitching them up to keep my muffin covered. Then the high waist ones dig into my waist if I size down but if I don't size down, they bag out and slide down and the hitching begins again. Jeans are so difficult!

Una--I can't wait to see if you like yours! Hope your package arrives soon. I was a little surprised at how stiff and thin the fabric was, for the price (premium jeans price, but Old Navy feel).

Rae and Lantana--I agree it's a departure from my usual style. I don't have a problem with trying new styles now that I've figured out my core style, but they have to be super fab for me to incorporate them. I agree though that sometimes when I wear something totally different, it can start to feel costumey on me (like that Heed loincloth sweater, I tried it but I just couldn't pull it off).

I like them a lot and think you could find ways to integrate them into your style. However, for the price, they should have a much better fit. There is an odd v-line coming up from the crotch, I don't know why. Maybe it doesn't show up IRL just in photos? Maybe try one size up?

This is a big departure for you, especially since you so recently discovered your personal style statement. Although I see why you were attracted to them, they come across a little costumey on ladylike you, and I wouldn't predict that they would get much wear or play nicely with the rest of your wardrobe.

If this were a year from now, and you felt your style needed some new direction, that would be one thing (although I kinda agree with Lantana that they might not fit the best), but you've finally got that covetable, cohesive wardrobe, and I guess I want to protect that.

If you are happy for them to be a fun addition to your wardrobe that's all that matters but I don't think these pants are worthy of your usual style. The low rise might prove to be a pain after a few hours' wear and the fabric doesn't seem to have the best drape, always noticeable with an obvious vertical in the pattern. I'd like to see a smaller plaid on you too. Oh well, I've gone out on a limb and will be more than happy to have my opinions shot down in flames.(but you did ask...)

Honestly, they look great with the first pair of boots. The moto jacket is a FAB match for them, too. I don't notice any spillage whatsoever. If you like them and the hubby likes them, they're a winner! And you're right - what a departure from what we're used to seeing you wearing! So fun that you're trying something so different and enjoying the look - this is what style is all about!

Angie's recent plaid pants post inspired me to order a red and black pair from ASOS. They are Tripp NYC Plaid Skinny Pants (Size 7--supposed to be the equivalent of a 28" waist):

So, what do you think? I love the red color. I know it may not be the most versatile or practical set of pants, but it's still fun to wear. Kind of 80's punk rock which is a fun departure from my usual ladylike style. And I can pretend to be Una for a day! ;-)

However, my main reservation is that it's a lower rise than I would ideally like, because some of my muffin top spills over the sides (see pic in sweater). You can't really tell though if I wear my black plaid zip peacoat over it though. It's not the highest quality cloth either--it's kind of similar to the Old Navy Rockstar Jeggings in terms of thinness/stiffness of fabric. I tried it on with the black Mia Nanette lace-up ankle booties and the black Frye Melissa knee high lace-ups, or I could go with my black Merrell Mocs if I want to be super casual. Does this look good or should it go back? I haven't checked with DH to see if this is look too loud and crazy for him, but what do you guys think?
