I am hedging my bets and ordering a 4 in the plaza coat in camel in case they can't find the rust. It will be easy for me to return if the color doesn't look good on me or if they do find the rust in-store (although the coat says "catalog/online only" so I'm not hopeful). The model wearing the camel coat is Asian and she looks good, so I think it's theoretically possible for me to wear camel--I just have to find the right shade. I don't know why but I am pining terribly for my ratty old camel coat, so I have to give it one last try before I officially bury the idea and end the quest. You know how it is when you are so attached to something, right? You can't rest until you've exhausted all possible alternatives!

OK so I just called customer service and asked them to try to find a size 4 in the henna color (apparently this color is only available in non-Thinsulate) in one of the stores. If they find it they will ship it to me. But I won't find out for another 2-3 days if they are able to locate one. Cross your fingers for me!

No. A 2 will be too small. Rotten luck :(

I don't think that you need thinsulate in SF. Try a 4. The reason to go bigger is to make sure that you can layer underneath. For example, with most of my coats, I can layer my leather jackets underneath them.

Sorry for all the questions. Does the 4 look too small on me or do you recommend the 6 to have more room for sweaters and bulky layers? My old coats were size 6 but feel big on me now. And should I spring for the Thinsulate or go with the cheaper regular version? Thanks!

Natalie, the fabric on the J. Crew coat that I suggested is a true melton-felted-wool. Much softer than the metro. (Actually, the stiffer fabric of the metro is one of the things that I love about it. Looks very strict and crisp in that type of fabric - which is an acquired taste, I know!). I'd order both the 4 and the 6 and see how you go with layering underneath them. It's a laborious process but so worth it.

I agree that out of these three, the last one looks the best. I love the idea of the coat Angie linked to, in a bright shade. Some of those hues would look gorgeous on you. I know what you mean about the feel of a coat--my winter coat from J. Crew, from several seasons ago, is a cashmere wool blend, and has a soft, almost felted feel to it that I love.

Oooh Angie, that rust colored plaza coat looks like it would be perfect! Should I stay with the size 4 or go up or down? Do you know if the fabric the same as the metro coat or is it softer? Also, is there much difference in warmth between the Thinsulate and the regular version? It looks like the regular version is on sale but not the Thinsulate so it would be about $100 cheaper to get the regular version.

May I suggest the revere collar coat from J. Crew instead, Natalie? I think that the cut will be more flattering on you. How about a blue or rust?

The rust coat is too voluminous, although the colour is fantastic.

Love the LE coat. Looks wonderful.

I agree the Ellen Tracy one feels a tad bit big--I think it's a combination of the longer midi length of the coat plus the sleeves are a bit too long. Unfortunately I can't buy a size 2--only size 6 and up are available now. Suz, brilliant idea about the scarves! I am still a scarf newbie and my new little collection has not been getting the workout it deserves.

I actually prefer the more structured look of the J Crew coat to the Ellen Tracy, but the feel of the fabric turned me off--I don't know how to describe it but it's very rough and scratchy. My old coat was softer like the Ellen Tracy one.

As for the puffer, I've never had one before. I was wondering if Lands End would be considered too "unstylish" and whether the puffer style is too casual, but it does seem to fit the best of the three coats. Even though it doesn't snow here, I do need a warm coat especially when I'm going to work in the chilly mornings. It gets in the high 30's/low 40's in the mornings in the winter and I tend to get cold easily. My new trench coats are a little on the thin side.

I'm pretty sure the J Crew is going back. If the fabric felt nicer I'd try another color but I think I will keep looking. I'm still waffling on the Ellen Tracy. I think the sleeves have notches so it might make it tough to alter. I'm leaning toward keeping the Lands End...it was pretty cheap on sale. Do you think the brown looks OK or should I try white instead?

Natalie, I agree about the camel coat. If you like the J Crew style, how about one of their other colours? But maybe not if you don't like the "hand" of the fabric. My sense is that this is a "crisp" coat and you want one that is softer.

The Ellen Tracy is a nice style for you but does look on the large side. If you really like it and can get the right size or alterations for sleeves, then do not worry about having to wear something that goes with the coat...that is what winter scarves are for! You get a scarf that harmonizes with your coat and tuck that at the neckline, not so it obscures the collar but inside the collar. You can also pop that collar a bit if you like. I have been known to fold even big lapels like this over for warmth....in some coats it spoils the line, but in others it works surprisingly well.

To me the down coat fills a completely different purpose. This one looks good. i have owned a LE puffer; it wasn't terribly stylish but it kept me warm for a couple of seasons and was very reasonably priced. It is done now after three seasons and I need a new one.

Goldenpig--Of the three coats, I believe the LE is the most flattering on you. The JCrew coat is lovely and fits good, but I don't think camel is right for you. The ET is too big, but I like the color on you. Camel coats are classic--and I had one once, but I finally decided that the color was not doing me in favors.

I really like the Ellen Trace coat on you - I love the color and the cut. I agree with Rute that it seems a bit big - but I can't tell if it's just too long in the sleeves or big all around. I would consider another size or getting it altered (getting the sleeves shortened). I think it's a very flattering style. I like the puffer, too - but don't you live in the Bay Area? Will you wear a puffer very much? I'm not quite as wild about the JCrew on you - I have a thing about camel, too, but I actually prefer the warmer rust color on you.

I've been on a quest to find a nice camel wool coat. I used to have this camel wool coat that I wore all the time for the last 15 years and the lining was all shredded and the sleeves were all worn. It was a little too big for me (now that I am used to wearing things more fitted) so instead of trying to repair it, it ended up being donated (sniff, sniff...). So in my mind I just HAD to find a replacement camel coat since I wore the other one so much.

Chapter 1 was the Helene Berman camel wool cape. I did use it to post a few pics here but never actually wore it outside. It's just been sitting in my closet unworn with the tags, because it's a little hard to style the cape especially with my flared midi skirts (too much volume). So I recently returned it to Nordstrom.

Chapter 2 was the camel Mackage Tessa coat that looked so fab in the NAS catalog but it ended up being too thin (unlined) and wrinkly and ill-fitting. So back that went.

So here's Chapter 3 in my ongoing saga. I really liked the look of Angie's J Crew Metro coat in her blog post--I love the fitted and clean lined shape. So I ordered one in camel. But now that it's here I'm not so sure about this one either. I like the shape, but the fabric is kind of stiff and not soft to the touch at all. And the pockets are not in a convenient angle/position to stick your hands into. And I'm still not sure that camel is a good color for me...it's very close to my skin color and tends to wash me out as you have all pointed out before. So I'm thinking of giving up on the camel coat quest. What do you think--keep or return on the J Crew coat? And should I forget about camel coats or keep looking for the perfect one?

So here are two alternatives that I found in non-camel colors. One is a rust colored coat by Ellen Tracy. It was also one of Angie's picks in her coat list. I like it because it's midi length and it's soft (wool and angora blend) and I think the color works well on me. On the other hand, the lapel is a bit wide and I'm not so keen on the prominent stitching. And the belted style makes it a bit more casual and bathrobe like. And because of the V neck, I'll have to make sure that what I wear underneath goes with the coat (no zipping/buttoning all the way up) so it doesn't look sloppy. But overall I like it a lot, what do you think?

The last one is a brown puffer with faux fur trim on the hood. It hits above the knee. It's from Land's End. I've also thought about going with a white/cream puffer coat instead of the brown if the brown is too dark on me. It looks like it'll keep me pretty warm.

All three of these coats are on sale. Are any of these keepers or should I keep looking?

1-2. J Crew Double Cloth metro coat in heathered camel, size 4.
3-5. Ellen Tracy Belted Notched Collar coat in rust, size 4.
6-8. Lands End Luxe Down Coat in spice brown, size S.
