I like 1, 3, and of course 15, featuring that great top.

It doesn't matter what they're called, if they're thinner, stretchier fabric, they're almost always going to look more dressed to me with a longer top. And if the top is lightweight, a little longer than if it's a mid weight.

I love the color, not blue, not green, and not denim. Great choice for a non black winter option.

Sterling, thanks so much. I guess everyone has leggings on the brain right now.

I do love my collection of cozy cardigans. I’ve decided to cull one of them, not shown here. Since I do tend to go overboard, I probably do have a few too many options, but they are very nice pieces that I want to keep. I also have a purple one that would look good too.

I agree that the sweater tunics are the best looks, which implies to me that I should keep a lookout for that kind of item. I do have a third sweater like that, but the colors are wrong for these pants, and it’s itchy enough that I might get rid of it at some point.

Christina -- I was literally just thinking about you. I was at the park and every single one of us was wearing black or grey full-length leggings. Then one woman walked up in medium-blue cropped leggings. She looked fabulous and I thought I must reach out to you when I got home.

Numbers 1,2 is my absolute favorite. I like numbers 3,4 as well. It is great that you have those long cozy cardigans too. I think they will serve you well.

Here are a bunch of trials. Last year I went all in on Blume and his tops in nets, as I felt attracted to Boho styles for the first time in my life. Now, as I am wont to do, I went to far in that direction and bought too many things. That will be partly the subject of another post I’m going to make. But the upshot is that I can wear these as leggings in the winter with a variety of long cardigans covering my rear.

I also tried with a couple of tunic length sweaters, and some long blouses. The other post will be about my long blouses.

As an additional note, I wore these pants for a while while trying these things on, and I didn’t notice too much loss of shape.

1-2 - cashmere tunic - I like

3-4 - Green tunic. I think the length is very good. I usually like more contrast in my outfits, so I will try these with tall black boots before deciding against or for.

5-10 - i’m not sure all these long cardigan look are equally successful, but the shows that I have a variety of options to play with

11, 15 & 16 - this is a new blouse that I am considering, that happened to come in around now. For some reason I don’t like it with these pants, but I might like them with other pants. Again, I will post about this

12-13 with longer blouses. I am on the fence about even keeping one of these blouses (both owned for a while)

14 - tucked in with a popover blouse.

Apologies as usual for my tiny New York bathroom and cracked mirror. All opinions and suggestions welcome.

When I decide I need something new to fill in my wardrobe, I tend to go overboard. This is why I am being so analytic here, as I’ve decided I need more pants color options but don’t want to buy something I won’t use just for the sake of having them.

I didn’t think the pants look like leggings at all in the pics. The pocket styling makes them look like skinny jeans to me. I have days when I feel like wearing skinnies with a shorter top, and I don’t see anything wrong with it.

Jules, I think you've hit the nail on the head about these pants. Since I have a short torso, I often find tucking problematic, as not tucking makes it look like my waist is in a lower place. I also find tucking to be fussy, and to make me feel disheveled, because I have trouble doing it neatly (occasionally it works with things like pencil skirts). I also don't have a lot of cropped tops, which I know would be an option to show off the top of the pants too as they'd read as waist-length on me. So it may be that I'd have to treat these as leggings most of the time.

I do think they feel good on and are super comfortable. I like how they look. I mostly posted about them because light pants in general are a bit outside my style comfort zone, and I think I'd be too apt to dismiss them if left to my own devices.

I find this type of pant very confusing. To me they are closer to a real pant because they have pant styling - belt loops, pockets, button. However they are very body concious pants (not a bad thing, they look good on you).

With leggings, I am in the over 40 camp of leggings are not pants.
To me, these will only look like pants if you tuck your tops to show the pant styling. If you cover the pant styling, they will look like leggings, then you need a longer top (in my biased view of leggings not being pants).

I have pants like these actually, but I never tuck because I am short waisted. Once the pant features are covered, they really just look like nice thick leggings.

I realize this probably doesn't help you at all. Do you feel good in these? If you don't feel 100%, will you wear them? We are definitely harder on ourselves than others are, but we also know best what we will wear in reality.

Diana, the fabric is most like a jegging or other very lightweight denim. I have slim pants in similar fabrics - I think the only difference here is that these are cut to be clingier on the calf. I think I can wear these with a shorter top, but would hesitate to do so at work unless i had a longer topper over them... since I work 5 days a week and don't change for most activities afterwards, that would be the vast majority of the use I get out of them.

What is the fabric like? (In terms of weight, sheerness, etc). I can’t tell in a photo, and I think that is really the biggest determinant of whether they seem too legging-like. Just from your photo I would not automatically think “that woman is wearing leggings as pants, argh!” so I think it really comes down to what you are comfortable with. I have jeggings that fit like this but are a heavier fabric (warmer than regular jeans) and I wear them both ways - with shorter tops (although generally not fitted ones) and under tunics/skirts.

ETA: I wonder how many people are being thrown by the word “legging” in the product name. Remember that lots of retailers (gap for one) just call their skinniest fit “legging” regardless of fabric, etc.

krishnidoux, do you agree with most people above that I need longer tops for this?

I am thinking about this issue I've had of finding tunics. I think the last time I looked for them actively, I wasn't a Nordstrom shopper. If I tried a couple of tunics from there, it might open up my options a bit. I can see online that they have some good options to try.

I don't need these leggings to be workhorses (more a wildcard, I guess), but I'd need to be able to style them at least 3-4 ways for work. I believe I will have more top options in the warmer months, but if I keep these now, I need to be able to wear them 3-4 ways now. I am going to play around with what I have at home, and then assess whether I should add a tunic or shift dress to my list of items to find. I believe these pants CAN work, especially since so many of you gave the thumbs up to how they look on me. But if I do shop for something to go with them, I want to be very mindful of what else in my wardrobe a new item will work with. I've shopped for coordinating items in a blind panic too many times.

It looks supercute and fits you well. The question will be to see if they stretch too much around the knees or not. I really like this color. Me too, am looking for denim in this shade, and have been for a few seasons now with no luck. Lighter color skinnies will always emphasis the top part of your legline: and it's not necessarily a bad thing. You've got a great firgure. Play with belts and footwear options if you feel you must anchor the look. I would suggest sand or taupe booties (flat or small heel, it's the high vamp that will take care of the structuring) and highlight your waist, either by tucking in and a belt, or long tunic cinched by a belt. Topper: cropped denim or leather jacket + long rolled scarf.

Unfrumped, I actually like that look but often fail at finding tops long enough. I have collected some over time, but I can never find ones that work on me when I’m specifically looking. I have a short torso, which you’d think would help, but my hips and legs are longer, so I still have trouble.

I do use that silhouette over black ponte leggings, but I have a number of long cardigans and a couple of pullovers that work with those that wouldn’t work with these, due to the color. For these, I think I have a grey sweater tunic and a cashmere tunic in a peacock blue that may work. I can also use a shorter top under a longer black cardigan. I also have a long open cardigan kimono in a greenish color that may also work. I have to poke around to see what else there is, and whether most of these items I named actually work.

It sounds like you are in the position of deciding whether you like the basic silhouette of a looong top over “ leggings” enough to create an entire capsule- such as light leggings and black or other dark leggings + several coordinating long tops. I think that style would look good on you, but I hear you on staring a whole new direction. I would not wear these as “ pants”, especially for work.

Hmm, While they are called leggings, I was thinking of them more like very light weight pants. I didn’t see what the pants were called until I looked them up online later. Maybe I was wrong. I think most of my tops that might go with it color-wise probably hit me around where the navy top I posted in the comments does, which means these probably aren’t practical to keep after all. I’m not sure any of the dresses I have would go with it, either, and I always have trouble finding tunics for some reason.

I need pieces versatile enough for me to wear to work, really. If most people absolutely think I need a longer top with this, then it’s probably not appropriate for me to wear it to work with the tops I do have. Oh well.

I will check what I have first, but I have fallen too many times into the trap of buying a bunch of stuff to go with other new stuff.

I like both pieces individually but not together. I fall in the camp of tunic length (fanny covering) with leggings, so recommend much longer tops than the examples you show above. The pants do fit well and the color is lovely on you.

Good fit and colour, knees look fine. I would personally wear a top that covered at least the top third of my thighs. I dread camel toe and don't want to do "leggings as pants". You're quite a bit younger than me and I think preferences on this may be partly generational but that's an unproven assumption I'm making. I also like the "long over lean" style and have done since I was about 30, in the early 90s. It could possibly be a bit dated but I ain't changing at this time.

I’m not a leggings expert but I am expert at working to avoid the lump and bumps issue with light colored pants, hence why I have relatively few, so I think these look really good for the light color. I do like the fanny- covering tops with leggings, and I think these work almost as a neutral, so you should be able to create outfits with them.

Such a lovely shade of blue! It will be refreshing to wear this lighter color on dark winter days. I like your new Loft top, too

I like the pants - and I think you have had good suggestions to date.

I also struggle a bit with lighter non-denim pants and am wearing my white ones today.

What Mainelady said. I like the pale blue color with black but wish the top were a couple inches longer.

I think the pants are such a pretty color and look good on you. I like the suggestions to wear them with slightly longer tops and boots. Or course, that may be because that is one way I like to style my slim fitting pants.

Here are some pics in my terrible mirror. I tried two different boots as I may want to wear this tomorrow, which will be relatively warm and wet. The shorter boots are waterproof. The top is not any longer than what I had on at the store, but I may layer over a longer sweater.

These are super comfy. I still need to see if they stretch out but I won’t keep them on right now. I need to eat and with my luck, I’d drop some food on them!

tanstaafl I have some tops that can work with this. The black bell sleeved top below is pretty long on me and may work quite well. I have a few others that I don't have in Finds.

I did buy the top.

Thanks everyone! Pairing bottoms is such a challenge for me but I'm determined to break out the black and dark blue jeans/pants winter rut.

The leggings look like they fit well. Did they pass the stretching test? Like others have said, I think a longer top would work better. And maybe a pattern with a darker color in it. Do you have some tops already that you are thinking of wearing with these?

Did you get the top too, since that is what you went to try on?

The fit looks good from what I can see, and I really like the colour (functionally, it's almost like light wash denim but without any of the distressed/fading effect). I can picture them styled with tall black boots and an oversized black blazer.

They look great. Pretty colour. It all depends on how you want to style them.
