Just to add a third possibility, I vote somewhere between 1 and 2 for the skirt length. And you look great in a pencil skirt!

Thistle I like the length of the skirt in #2. You have fabulous legs and I think the shorter length shows them off better Shame about the dress.

I prefer the longer length skirt & you're right about the unfortunate placement of the dress pockets. I know you mentioned in an earlier post that you were a pear but you look like a beautiful curvy hourglass to me.

Another vote for the longer skirt length! I like it even better with Suz's idea of a slight taper.

Sorry about the dress!

I agree about liking the length of the skirt in pic #1 better than the second one. Pencil skirts are SO flattering on hourglass shapes like yours, and I think you look great. Unfortunately, I agree about the dress going back. Perhaps LE will read the comments about the item and rethink pocket placement next time!

The skirt looks great, especially in #1 at the longer length. Suz has a great idea to taper it . The dress doesn't flatter with those oddly placed pockets. Maybe Lands End has another dress that would work better.

I think the skirt's a keeper. Speaking for myself, instead of making it shorter, I'd have it narrowed slightly at the bottom; this will create a lovely line. You have a terrific hourglass shape!!

I don't think the dress is as flattering to you. So sad...that is the fate of us catalogue shoppers, alas...

My dry cleaners charges about $15 ($7 on sale days) to hem an unlined skirt. You could also have the pocket stitched up and them cut off to give a cleaner line. I have done this with pants and the charge was about $20. Do you like the color?

That's the funny things about catalogs and looking online, they make it look great on the models but different people, different shapes. I have ordered tons of things that I thought would be great. I try it on and return because it is just not for me. Remember, it's the clothes, it's not you!

I do like the skirt in 1 better.

Reading through the comments on Land's End, it seems the number one reason people are returning the dress is the pockets.

It does not make me feel fab, so back it goes.

The skirt I do like. Funny thing is I was so keen on the dress whe I ordered!

I think I prefer the longer length on the skirt too. It really elongates the middle section and it looks like you may be a touch short waisted.

I am afraid the dress is not worthy. The pocket placement is off. I suspect they will get a few of them back.

Taking the skirt up is a simple alteration for a tailor - I'd take the skirt in to see how much it would cost before you decide. I'm not keen on the dress - I think the skirt works much better on your body than the dress.

I think either skirt length works, but I'd like to see a little heel with #1 if you wear them.
My local dry cleaner does alterations, and it costs $5 to hem unlined pants. Maybe you can find something similar if you prefer the shorter length.
I had a very similar problem with a Land's End dress. Honestly, I don't love this on you

Skirt 2 looks great to me but I think 1 could work too. Hard to tell if the dress would work with those big circles you drew on!
This happens to me sometimes and I stitch the pockets down which makes a smoother line - would that work?

Thistle, I actually prefer the skirt length in 1! I find that length more flattering. It emphasizes the very hourglassy figure of yours. :)

I see what you mean about pocket placement on the dress, but it is great fit otherwise. Tough call!

Lands End has recently expanded their line of plus size clothing. I buy my husband's tee shirts there, so I thought I would try a piece or two.

Pic 1. Ponte knit pencil skirt. It is quite comfy and the material seems nice. It is not lined, so I will need to wear a slip with it. I like everything about it, except the length. I am not sure this is a good length on me.

Pic 2. I pulled the skirt up quite high to see what it would look like more at the knee. This seems like a better length, but I cannot sew. I do not know a seamstress, and while I would like to find one, not sure a LE skirt would be worth the cost of alterations.

Pic 3. A dress I absolutely loved in the catalogue. I think this needs to go back. The dress has pockets RIGHT at the point on my hips I would most like to minimize. Instead of minimizing, the skirt really seems to add a weird bulky shape. Might just be my eye. I paired it with a belt I already have instead of the self fabric one it came with hoping it would help.
