I'm not too worried about the neckline because my scarf is oversized, but the warmth factor is on my mind. At the moment, the coat is a "maybe," and I'm waiting for another, very different style of jacket--but one that is warm!--to come in the mail with which to compare it. I have a feeling the pink coat may end up going back because as much as I love the colour and cut, it still feels overpriced for something that I may not be able to wear for all of winter. On that note, one of the wrenches in coat shopping has been these delayed winters. This week, there's a night time low of -6C and a day time high of 14C--not exactly winter weather, in my books. Even my regular winter coat can become too much when worn with a sweater once temperatures surpass 7C.

Are there online reviews for the coat, noting the warmth factor? I think it's beautiful, but as Diana noted, that's a low neckline.

I'm all for making one's dreams happen. If you can swing the Burberry and it's warm enough, I'd say go for it. YOLO, and all that

GF....is this the coat?
given that its from the PreFall and not the Fall collection, i''d question the warmth of this for the deep winter.....but i think it would be great for the transtional period...ie temps around 40F/4C and higher

Beautiful! I have a wool coat that is very light and thin but surprisingly warm. It still isn’t for the coldest winter days though. Would you have a warmer coat for those cold days?

It's a lovely coat. No argument in that department!

I'd have concerns about the pale colour though, which looks thoroughly unforgiving when it comes to wear and tear. Not only for any traces of dirt, pilling and creasing will also be very visible, particularly on lightweight fabric. However, quality fabric usually ages gracefully. It's a bit of a gamble.

I too would be concerned about the warmth factor. There's nothing worse than freezing and not being able to get warm, especially if it's a miserable day and you have to wait for a bus outside, etc. Can you test the coat outside first and see how it performs?

Thanks for the feedback—some food for thought here.

FI, no known infestation of moths to worry over (or hidden motives on my part) — just an amplified concern when dealing with precious coats in the four-digit range.

One reason why I didn’t pursue the Burberry coat was because it lacked a lining — much like this one (to answer Lisa).

Designers will say that a lining adds bulk, but I don’t buy this excuse. Stretch silk is lovely and breathable, and adds no bulk whatsoever. Diana (IIRC), in her textile wisdom, once pointed out the issue of pilling and static without the lining, so that’s a potential flag.

As for choosing this coat over the trench, it also has to do with body changes—trenches are meant for stable sizes, and I need something more accommodating for medical-related fluctuations.

Regarding dirt, I wouldn’t be concerned with splashes because the coat hits at the knee, and my long puffer doesn’t tend to get dirty above mid-calf. What would concern me, however, is the potential for denim dye transfer—I’d have to be cautious here. As for the potential for stains, I’ve worn the same huge cashmere travel wrap for years in this exact shade and it has miraculously remained stain-free, even with coffee spills, food stains, and bus/train/airplane/hostel travel. I’m not lucky with white, but light pink and wool/cashmere tend to be more forgiving than cotton, I find.

Oh, and RC, it’s by Acne Studios.

Ohhh, Janet makes a good point about the light color. You’d have to keep it clean through dirty trains, getting splashed by cars, coffee spills, etc. I wouldn’t be able to keep it clean all winter myself (I usually get my coats cleaned once per year, at the end of the winter right before I store them).

I know I have to wash my white sweaters waaaaaay more often than my dark ones, and I think a coat would be just as bad. Worse because you have to get it dry cleaned which at least around here is super expensive for coats.

It’s a great-looking coat and could be a happifying change for your wardrobe.

I’m a little wary of relying on the sales associate’s personal experience in deciding whether it is warm enough. Aren’t there reviews online, perhaps at a different seller’s website?

Also, your reasoning about the Burberry seems a little off. You’re worried about something being liable to destruction by moths, so you’re considering wool/cashmere instead? How many non-Burberry coats would have to get eaten to equal the price of the Burberry? Do you have such an incredible infestation of moths in your home? If someone gave me that explanation as to why I shouldn’t have one, I’d assume that it was a sham answer, and wonder what their real reason was.

I think you'll need to layer under a thin coat - especially a roomy one. The cold air will be floating around in there! Thin layers though, so you won't look too "stuffed."

I think the tricky thing will be getting the sleeve length right to capture the deliberately oversize look.

I have a couple things that are double faced wool. They're nice and warm. The cashmere is probably to make it softer rather than warmer. It's a beautiful coat. If it were me, I would definitely keep it!

I think it's great on you. However, I'd be wary of the weight. Wool/cashmere should not be that light a blend. (Compared to, say, alpaca which is indeed very lightweight in comparison to its warmth.) It's not only the fiber you have to be concerned with, it's also how MUCH fiber is in the coat, if that makes sense. Think of a cashmere sweater - a heavy, tightly knit one made from thicker yarn will be much warmer than one made with thin yarn knit at a loose gauge, even though they are made of the same material. A tighter woven material is also much preferable, both for warmth and because it's much more durable.

For the record, my Burberry (which I believe is 75/10/15 wool/cash/synthetic or something very similar) weighs more than my other wool coats of similar size/fiber and it's because the fabric is very high quality, tightly woven, and heavy.

In this case I'd trust your own feeling. E.g. does it feel warm enough to you with your regular layers underneath? How does it compare to your old coat? Go outside and see if it keeps the wind out.

One other thing to consider. With a coat like this you're going to need a big scarf because of the low neckline. For me this wouldn't be an issue because I have many gigantic scarves, but you should make sure that your scarves are big enough to adequately fill the open neckline.

On the coldest days (-30degC) I wear my wool/cashmere blend Pea coat. It is lighter than most wool coats I've tried. I don't know if that is just how the fabric is woven or if it is a property of the cashmere. It looks like you could easily layer under this coat, too.

My current cocoon coat is shabby enough for my partner to notice, which is a bad sign. I’ve been trying to replace it since the beginning of the season, but haven’t had much luck. The two Smythe coats that I posted here were ultimately sent back for fit issues. My dream coat is a Burberry cashmere trench, which I could get with a significant employee discount, but I fear sinking the much money into a garment that risks being destroyed by moths.

I found the following coat that is wonderfully oversized and very light and thin—so thin, in fact, that I contacted the manufacturer to ask whether this was a suitable winter coat. The CS associate assured me that it was, and that she lived in my city and was able to manage with a similar coat that was made from the same material, and breezier in the front. The material is a double-faced 85% wool/15% cashmere blend—what does that mean as far as warmth goes? That something thin can be deceptively warm?

Any thoughts on the material or style are welcome.
