Ah, yes, I remember all the plums and cranberries !

Yes, if the colors are practically the same and it doesn't work, then no reason to hang on !

Now that I know about waterproofing, I can't stop thinking of all the stuff I want to spray. See you soon ! :-)

Isabel, the lack of belt loops + slippery fabric means the belt wouldn't stay put, especially because I wouldn't want it riding up.

I have to say that if it wasn't exactly the same color as my other trench I'd seriously consider keeping both, the styles are different enough. Unfortunately I don't like any of this season's other colors. Google images reveals that once upon a time it came in plum as well as in some fun prints, so I might keep an eye on eBay.

I like the M LE on you a lot. You look lovely in this shade of blue. And I don't mind the cut of it on you in the least. I do like your existing trench as well, though, so if waterproofing seems a good temporary solution, that might make sense while you exercise PPP for the new trench.

Well, we will see how waterproofing the old one goes... I have a while to decide anyway since Isabel actually needs to return them for me and I am seeing her the week after next. In the meantime I'll think about it a bit more. I know the small is going back for sure.

The back belt is not really functional. It's not tight at all, and I think shortening it (moving the buttons won't work) would mess up the line of the back. The funny thing is that I like the rear view fine, it's just the front view I'm not loving.

Angie, I do like the fit of the new one in the hip. What I'm not crazy about is the waist fit; you can see it in the photos where my arms are down. It just seems too boxy, and the fabric is a bit stiff so it's not drapy enough for my taste... I wish it had a belt; that would help a lot. The reality is that my waist-hip differential is so great that I can't get straighter cuts to fit both waist and hip.

I found waterproofing spray at ll bean today so I'm going to give it a shot.

I do prefer the new M to your existing trench, actually. Your old trench is very voluminous in the hip area. The new one is more streamlined. I prefer that cut. And I see I'm in the minority!

Hm, I love your existing one soooo much more. Maybe a light spray of this stuff? It says the fabric stays breathable if you don't totally saturate it with product.

Parsley, I didn't know you could waterproof coats! (Although it makes perfect sense...). May have to get my hands on some of that spray...

Donna, I like the body and sleeve length as they are, so I'm pretty sure they'd be too short on the petite, unfortunately...

Claire, I agree about liking a looser fit these days. I just wonder if this one is too loose. I wish the belt was actually functional, that would help a lot.

Joy, I do have another trench (the red corset one from Anthro) but its also not waterproof. What I need is a waterproof (not just water resistant) raincoat. I'm looking at trench styles because I don't want anything too gearish.

Well, since I have trenches on the brain, I'll tell you what I think, lol!
I like the medium too. The length is better than the small and I love the back of it with that cute half-belt. It looks like a really good cut for you, and if you did end up wanting to layer, you'd have plenty of room.

My eye is starting to prefer the larger of two sizes in trench coats (including my own). It seems more luxe to have plenty of room, and makes us look smaller inside the coat, instead of the coat being on the small side, (like we shrunk it and can't afford a new one). Just my crazy perception, YMMV!

I think I like the medium better- the small looks just a little snug.

But to throw a monkey wrench into your decision making, have you thought about using waterproofing spray on your old one? I think I like it the best, anyway.

I did that with one of mine, and it worked really well. Now water just beads up on it. For $15 or less you can have a "new" waterproof raincoat.

Isabel was nice enough to track down these Land's End rain trenches for me, and they arrived today. I have them in two sizes, small and medium. Note that in these photos I'm wearing a thin, sleeveless dress under the coats. Since this is going to be a spring/summer raincoat, I don't need to layer anything huge under it, but I might want to be able to wear a blazer or something under. The weight is good and the fabric seems like it's pretty waterproof. I'm unsure about the fit though; I suspect I may be between sizes.

1-5 is the Medium. There is definitely room to layer anything I want under this, but I think it may look too big/sloppy overall, especially in the top/waist.
6-9 is the Small. I think the fit on top is better but I'm not sure how much I could layer under. (I will try later when it's cooled down a bit! I nearly died of heat trying these on earlier...) Note that the bottom button is unbuttoned in these photos as the hip is too tight when buttoned. I may be able to move it over a little if I decide to keep this size.

#10 is my existing blue trench, which I still like but which is kind of useless as a raincoat as it has lost all semblance of water resistance. Size wise it is somewhere between the two Land's Ends coats, and there is a belt and flared bottom which helps a lot.

So, what do you think? Is it is a keeper? What size?
ETA: another option that Parsley and others suggested would be to use waterproofing spray on the existing one (#10).
