I will say, I have a pair of boots with a similar silhouette (below) and find them difficult. Possibly in my case it's just because they're more masculine than what I usually go for (and I'm still not super inclined to pick black boots for any given outfit), but that lip in front always feels tricky. Pull it over skinnies? Tuck it in?
