Jenni -- right?! When I "lunch" it's usually 10 minutes of coffee with a friend, followed by thirty minutes of herding little kids.

I don't own pearls, pumps, or pencil skirts (though I could probably find a use for any or all three, just not together), so the chances of my drifting too far down the lady/twee path are probably pretty slim.

Ha! You know I work so jolly hard, if I ever got to go out to lunch during the week I wouldn't mind being taken for a lady who lunches. I would know it was manifestly not true.
You're much too young and gamine to be taken for such.

I love it on you! I think it will work brilliantly to add a bit of polish to the casual wardrobe. This style of jacket is a slam dunk on a gamine type! To keep it from looking too "twee" just style it more or less as you have here -- with denim, or black denim, or cropped denim, or culottes and modern footwear; you can also try a graphic tee underneath. Of course it will also work in a ladylike way with the dresses but there you might need to play around with accessories to avoid the "twee" factor. But in the circumstances you'd be wearing that combination, it might be precisely what you are after.

Thanks all! I am leaning toward keep and will post more photos after the weekend.

lisa p -- I know what you mean about this sort of jacket reading too classic/mature. I don't often find myself attracted to tweed jackets, probably for that reason. Something about this one seemed to tick a lot of boxes -- the chunky trim, just enough white, etc. (Last summer I was convinced I needed a chunky white sweater to wear over dresses and skirts, but every time I tried one on, it was just *too much* white -- I think I prefer white integrated into a pattern, not a giant solid swath of it.)

I've tried on a couple of toppers over the past few months that seemed more modern/trendy to me (silky bomber, knit moto with metallic threads) and they've all fallen so totally flat on me. I like the idea of a moto, but find them hard to wear unzipped -- so much extra fabric flopping around in the front. And I like the idea of a bomber, but I haven't found one cropped enough for my tiny torso -- the elastic band at the bottom always sits too low on my hip and I end up with a borrowed-from-grandpa look which is not really what I want.

Re: sleeves, I am fairly certain I need to add a vest or two to my winter wardrobe. I've always had "sensory issues" when it comes to too many sleeves layered over one another. So if this ends up being a spring/summer/fall jacket, that's probably not the jacket's fault.

It actually looks great with your existing outfit. Make sure that you are comfortable with the way the sleeves fit if you want to use it as an indoor thopper; you don’t want to be confined to short sleeves. But I think it definitely has a place in your closet.

It's a cute jacket and fits you well, and is definitely dressier than a denim jacket....but I wonder about the current-factor of these jackets. Of course the original Chanel style is a classic, but unless you really style it carefully, they can look overly mature and do I say dowdy? I went through a period of buying them when I saw them, then finally deciding to get over it and not look at them anymore. I think with jeans, interesting shoes and something looser and longer underneath, it could work though.

Thank you all for the boost! I may be overthinking this. :)

There is nothing like this topper in my closet. The closest I can think of is my white denim jacket and my black square cardi. This falls somewhere in between the two in terms of fit (not as relaxed as the black cardi, not as fitted as the white denim), but I *think* it's a bit dressier than either. If I keep, I plan to wear it to a couple graduation ceremonies this spring, an outdoor baby shower, etc.

I'd definitely wear it with my merino dresses, and I hope I can make it work with my wide-leg pants too (see Finds). I have plenty of sleeveless tops (prefer them over t-shirts) -- silk tank, Uniqlo Supima tanks in multiple colours. I have no doubt it will look fine over jeans+tee type outfits. I'd been contemplating trying to find a white cardi for summer wear (when my black one feels too dark), and maybe this is the option I'm looking for.

I'm away from home this weekend, but it sounds like it's worth doing a round of styling try-ons when I get back Monday evening. I've put together a little theoretical capsule in Finds, showing some things from my closet that might coordinate.

I picked this up during after-Christmas clearance, drawn to the zig-zags and contrasting trim, thinking it could be a good light spring jacket, and possibly double as an indoor topper in the winter. There are times when I'm finding I'd like to wear my white denim jacket, but it feels seasonally confused to do so, and thought this might be an alternative. I was also hoping this would skew a bit more polished than a denim jacket, but I'm not sure that it does.

It's a loose-weave cotton jacquard, quite stretchy, so not much structure. It almost reads more as a cardigan than a jacket? Which is what's making me hesitate. It's open front, but if I keep I'll probably sew on a little vintage clasp a bit more than halfway up -- the contrasting trim makes a flattering x-shape when it's held closed like that.

Not showing it styled here, just thrown on over today's outfit. Oh -- and sleeves are a bit narrow, not ideal for layering over long sleeves (which is what I'm doing here) -- this is one of my denim jacket's constraints too. Does it seem versatile or special enough to keep?
