I definitely like this better than the longer one - this one is more clear-cut, in function - it is a miniskirt, not a miniskirt masquerading as a longer skirt I feel like you can get more out of this skirt, and you can wear it again and again, without feeling like everyone has seen it, because it can either stand out, or blend in. And I really really love the green color!

In my twenties, I used to wear shorter skirts to work, because that was available in most of the twenty-something shops and departments I shopped in. Because I didn't dress frou-frou or twee - and because I always stayed on top of things - I never felt underestimated, or not taken seriously. So I think... if you really really want to wear this skirt to work, and it doesn't break any written dress codes, wear it with some opaque tights and shoes that aren't overtly sexy. If your office does casual Fridays, I think that's the time to test-drive the skirt.

ETA: I forgot to say... I would wear the skirt if your work environment is not formal, or a super-conservative business, such as banking. And then... I would wear it with opaque tights, and something high-necked, with a longer sleeve.

To answer your question, I'd say it's the amount of thigh exposed. My answer to "How much thigh can a skirt expose in a professional (office, lab, etc.) setting?" is "None, when standing, and very little, when sitting." (Do a sit test in front of a mirror to understand how much more thigh gets exposed when you sit and cross your legs.) The deal is, you want to be professional at work. You want to be noticed for your skills and intelligence and abilities.

I bet this will look very different with tights! Will it be versatile with your tops? Do you plan to tuck/non tuck? I think if it fits in with your closet & you're comfortable with the mini length it could be a nice casual/going out piece.

Even with tights I wouldn't call it work appropriate though, because in my mind the shortest a skirt should be for work is right above the knee cap. To your question, I'd say it's the length of the skirt, which shows quite a bit of thigh, plus the leather fabric & exposed zipper, which both add a bit of sexiness, a word which doesn't scream work appropriate to me. But as Joy said it depends on your work environment too.

Can you sit down in the skirt without having to keep pulling at it? If so, it looks fine for going out but I feel that too much thigh is exposed for work even with tights. I suppose it depends on where you work though.

Quick follow-up question: Is a skirt deemed inappropriate by its length, by the length of leg exposed, by the proportion of full leg exposed, or by the proportion of thigh exposed?

Thank you everyone for the comments so far! Regarding the length, I'm not sure if this makes a difference in real life vs the photo, but I have short calves, and the skirt is sitting on my hip, not my waist. In the previous photo I posted, the skirt sat at my waist, so the zipper was much higher than it in this photo.

I like it. My only hesitation is the length, but looking at your pics you can carry it off in a cool and tasteful way. It lends it self to an edgy look which I think is part of your style?

Love the skirt! Short yes but I think it looks great on you. An oversized sweater with stompy boots and you have a killer edgy look

Whoa. That skirt is awesome, and it looks fabulous on you. Love how the boots tame down the sexy just a notch.

I love the bottle green. It's punky for sure and short, but the other one was too long. Some leggings/tights and I think you're good to go.

I'll plunk it into the non-work category, for wearing out, with friends. In terms of length, it's not to short to wear to campus, but I would only wear it to work with black woolen tights in winter.

It's a nice skirt. Though, im partial to the warm neutral colors cPlanning tights or no? What is your target occasion for wear? It isn't to me a " work" skirt for most places.

This is the mini version of the split skirt I posted recently. It is bottle green, and instead of fitting at my waist, it sits lower on the hip. I like the length. Enough room in the skirt for weight/bloating to fluctuate without major repercussions.
