I’m glad you returned it, if you felt it wasn’t absolutely what you wanted and needed!

I thought the top half fit you beautifully, but you looked swamped from the natural waist, down. And strangely, that seam around the lower/waist hip really stood out in your photo, and barely shows in the stock photo, but I thought that seam made the dress look too large/long for your body.

It's disappointing when something is so almost right but now you're free to find something even better. The color was great and the volume might have been ok in a different material? Maybe something like the dress Ummlila included in her post? A softer fabric that would follow your shape more?

Glad that “ clarity” developed.

Sometimes for me it is immediately obvious and other times I have to let the clarity emerge - even though there is advice about , either you love it or you don’t, spit- spot. This is true for my wardrobe editing as well.

Thanks for all the helpful feedback. I tried to play around with the dress, styling it using the suggestions here. Nothing I did felt quite right. I did like it better when I tried to shorten it a bit, but not enough to keep because I also noted that the fabric wrinkled too easily. I alternate between sitting and standing at work, and if something wrinkles, my backside is going to quickly look sloppy. I love the color, so I will keep my eyes alert for another option.

I somewhat agree with those who are not totally sure about this for you - I feel like maybe you could do the strong colour, or the silhouette, but perhaps both together are a little overwhelming on you? For example, I could see the navy one like Suz' working better perhaps? Or this colour in a sleeker style.

In any case, now that you have some great styling suggestions, I agree with the suggestion to sit with it for a few days and see what you think.

Hmmm. I feel the type of shirt dress that Angie and Suz have comes with more ability to tweak the look (undo buttons, pop the collar, roll the sleeves...). Plus they have the classic feminine X shape which I don't see in this dress. Although the sleeves are shorter to begin with on this one, they look too long for a short sleeve, and combined with the very closed and plain neckline... well it's just a lot of red fabric without a lot of room to play. I feel somewhat the same about the stock photo, although I agree with the poster who said it's been pinned and played with to fit well in the waist (looks amazing from the back, actually...). The dropped waist plus higher self belt is interesting but not classic to my eye...

I think it looks big because the belt is loose. If the self belt or preferably a different belt were snugged up, it wouldn’t look too big.

Good advice here re belt and shoes, so I won’t repeat! But I do want to support the idea of an alteration. It might help to raise the hem and to slim the skirt material just a bit. In my book, clothes aren’t ready to wear until I’m satisfied they fit ME. If you love the color, material and style, it’s worth a bit more investment to make it perfect for you.

Your longer hair is great!
This is a departure from what you usually wear. Is that a bad thing? Much of what you show here is carefully selected to present a very specific image at work. Would you wear this for work, and if so, does the image it project make the statement you want to make there? If it isn’t for work, when would you wear it? I can see it going to a casual bbq or an outdoor music festival, but are those happening in the timeframe you usually keep a dress?

Afraid I voted Nay. It looks overwhelming to me and like you don’t love it from your expression and querying. I agree with DonnaF that the forum is collectively a huge enabler.
I don’t necessarily buy when the forum enables. I still have not bought the silver pants I was considering about 2 months ago.
I notice Angie’s dresses are slightly shorter on her than this is on you but that could be the angle of the photo.
Be aware I am being *extremely* PPP, plus I am a tight-wad. I don’t see you as the latter. So my thoughts may not be relevant.

The dress is a beautiful color and fits well. I think unbuttoning a top button and perhaps folding it back on each side would lighten the entire look. Like the ideas to put the sash to the side and shorten up the loose ends as Suz described. If playing with all the tweaks leave you feeling “meh”, then next. You have a great wardrobe and no need to compromise.

I like it for you — it’s a little departure from the sheath dress I’m used to seeing on you, but these times seem to call for easier, less fitted or strict silhouettes. I love the neckline and even though I don’t like that sleeve length for myself almost to the point of poison eye, I like it for you.

My ideas for making it work better are: 1) replace the self belt with something with a little more contrast or interest to break up the long expanse of red dress, and 2) possibly consider hemming it a couple of inches? It seems maybe a bit long even though I know you have plenty of height to carry it off. I think that would just help reduce the amount of extra fabric. I’d like to see it with silver sneakers.

I like this dress on you, it is fun, vibrant and a real statement. But a dress like this is something that you will only wear if you love it. I know that whilst I love to wear the colour red, it is quite rare for me to wear an all red outfit.

I think this looks really great on you! The color and the fit are great, and you have the frame to carry it off. I like it with the sneakers. I even like the belt how you have it, slightly loose. This gets a lot of love from me! But, as others have noted, if you're not superexcited to put it on, then I would probably return it; you need to feel happy in it!

I voted YAY. I love it on you, Staysfit! Beautiful silver curls too.

I don't find the silhouette overwhelming. I simply don't think you're used to long flowing dresses. My suggestion is to hold onto it for a few days. Try it on again, and see how you feel then. Prance around a little at home in it! Flop onto the couch! Try it with low contrast shoes. Try a wider belt. If things still feel off - return.

(Belt needs a crisp press )

FWIW, and nodding along with Suz, I have a slight frame. I am neither tall, nor broad shouldered, and I battle to fill things out with my real estate. I wear these types of dresses all the time and feel great in them. I love wearing BIG skirts too. And always with flats and sneakers. These are last year's pics.

It's a gorgeous dress, and I really like Suz's suggestions. But one thing jumps out at me. You don't look thrilled by it. I know these selfie poses are by nature a bit awkward, but I sold ladieswear for a lot of years, and one for sure measure was always how a woman held herself and the look in her eyes when she tried on something that made her feel great. You're asking us, so I'm guessing you don't have that "love it" feeling. FWIW I'd suggest holding out for something that makes you feel wildly glowing and confident.

Close, but not a 10. Waist up is a good fit, but too much fabric waist down. It overwhelms your slender frame. ‘Not sleek enough’ identifies the issue quite accurately.

The colour is gorgeous on you.

I have a suggestion.

I own a similar dress (in navy) from Halogen a few years ago. Admittedly, I usually wear it with a small heel because I am so short and that is not how you want to wear it -- but you have the height to balance it anyway.

So this is my trick. You have to be very particular about the sash. I actually double mine and turn it into a little tiny side knot as a rule. You can also do a big bow but that is not my style. The sash is crucial in how it looks.

Also, see how it looks with one neck button undone.

Mine has long sleeves which I scrunch for structure. The short sleeves may ironically be a problem with this one -- you have the structure but it looks less intentional.

You can see Angie wearing this same dress (in different colours) really well in some of her former posts. And she wears hers with flats. I *have* worn mine with sneakers, too -- it's just not quite as good on 5'4" me.
