Yeah, I think they are off and since you sense it already, it will just annoy you more over time that they are not perfect. That's what happens when your standards are high, darn it. I had the same agony with the lace-up Fryes I sent back because they were too tall...

I think they are too tight in the calves and not quite perfect at the ankle either. Can that be adjusted?

Traci, I think they are cute. If your heart says that they aren't perfect, though, they should go back.

BTW, I have very full calves, so I know how hard it can be to get boots that fit. One thing I've noticed is that on me lace-ups seem to accentuate the fullness of my calves by highlighting just how much tighter they are around my ankles and looser/wider across my calves. I DON'T see that effect on you, so that's a real plus with these. Still, it seems like your impulse is to send them back. I'd wait a few days and then make a final decision.

Is the tongue of the boot overlapping enough with the sides? The laces might be too short because the calf circumference as designed, might be too narrow for you. If the tongue is not overlapping enough, it will shift revealing your leg, with movement. I would make sure there is enough overlap. Otherwise, I think they look great.

I just pulled the trigger on the Viennas in tan.
http://www.amazon.com/FRYE-Vie.....B001VNBP9K

I'm hoping they're darker/more subdued in person.

I'd say I'm 90% on sending the Melissa back. I don't like how far the front is spread mid calf. They look strained. I think they'd loosen up a bit, but as they are there's no way a pair of skinnies could go under them. I want these boots to be very versatile.

*sigh*

If the Viennas don't work I'm going to try to work out a road trip to chicago to hit up Lori's shoes, Nordies and Macy's. Mail order is tough! but my area just doesn't have the variety I'm looking for.

Stay tuned. Vienna will be here Friday.

I like them! The beauty of lace ups is that they will accommodate a variety of calf sizes. Get longer laces and you'll be fine. Also, they don't look like they'll hit the back of your knee if you sit down.

Try them with a couple of outfits to confirm, but they look like a KEEP so far to me.

(Also, not to make it all about me but I want MY Frye boots to arrive too! Three more days!!)

I'll work on a full body pic. I sacrificed the hair tie I was wearing to tie up my laces and my head looked a fright! I'll try again in a bit.

I'm debating ordering the Frye Vienna to compare. It lists a larger circumference. I'm unsure about the tan color, it looks very bright orange on my screen, but you never know.

I got my boots today, too! TGIFrye-day!

I think the calf would be just fine with proper length laces, Traci. But can we see a full body picture to see the proportions? I think I remember you worrying that they might look too tall on you?

Boots are so tricky to fit, but it's worth holding out for the right pair. These look too tight in the calf. I vote return:(

Here are the Frye Melissa lace ups. The laces are not long enough, which makes assessing the fit a bit tough. I put hair ties on the top two eyelets to hold the top closed. They would cinch more than this with proper laces.

I'm holding my comments for now. What do you think?
