I agree with Anne that casual skirts and dresses are so comfy in the truly hot weather! I only have one pair of shorts because I've gone the skirt/dress route almost entirely when it's too hot for pants.

We live about an hour away from each other so I'm familiar with your needs when it comes to seasonal dressing. I resort to summer dresses or skirts when the temps and humidity soar. Dresses are actually my favorite because of the uh, "air circulation." Bermuda shorts can feel stifling on those days. Keep looking for your perfect pair of longer shorts, but consider skirts and tops or even more casual dresses for the hot days. My kids are 8 and 11 now, but when they were little, I couldn't find shorts that I liked at all and wore skirts and tops all summer. It's another "uniform" you have to figure out and nail down, but keep your options open! You look so nice in dresses that I can see you in various iterations of that for all seasons.

ETA: The longer Nic and Zoe dress you linked to the other day ... I can see that being comfy on hot days when you want to be casual. It would be appropriate for work or play, you know? With some sandals ... quite comfy, I think!

Thistle, I know we can find a better fit. Wait till next month for a better long shorts assortment. I'll be shopping with you for long shorts!

As for skirt tops, have you tried your new killer wrap tops with your flared skirts?

I agree that the fit isn't great. I walk around a bit in shorts and if the legs start to do the bunching thing, they aren't for me. I have a tendency to buy shorts quite loose and belt. I prefer the legs to hang loosely since my thighs are a bit problematic.

Don't give up. Shorts are very hard for many of us and take some trial and error. I think they are worse than jeans.

I haven't boguht too many skirts lately, partly because of the topper situation. It is SO hard to find tops the appropriate length.Unless you buy pencil skirts. I have 3 of them, and 2 have become real workhorses for me. I just don't post WiWs of them much as you have seen them before.

They need a longer top(covering some bum and hips) and that's all. Maybe a hi-low tunic? But I would really love much better a longer length shorts on you, for ex mid calf length-then will much more elongating your legline.
I personally don't wear much shorts nowadays, for eliminating that frump factor-so-I don't know if you would wear shorts for the big heat, cuz then you can definetely do better with any of your beautiful dresses(or a skirt) but for a very casual setting, like hiking or so, this will do all the jobs for you, too--(with a longer topper).

I think you can do better. I see the same issue as Isis on back pockets. A slightly longer length might be better as well. However, the most important is that you already are mentioning the frump factor (and not the happy factor I've seen when you've posted some of your lovely dresses). Hang in - I find great shorts being really hard to find too

If you feel frumpy in them - then listen to yourself - no need to try to talk yourself into them. There *are* shorts out there for you that will make you feel FAB! (Also, I agree with Jennifer - the length is not a good one for you - I'd try something that hits you right at the mid-knee or upper knee.) These also look like they are pulling across the crotch area, but it might just be the shadows in the pic - also, the pocket placement is pretty wide - so, I guess I'm saying - return. So sorry!

I agree return those . The fit isn't the best as you are getting creasing at the front and back . Also ( I get this too) they aren't the MOST flattering length for your figure .A couple inches longer and the line break is at a much better spot where your leg indents at the knee -a true bermuda or pedal length.
The shorter length ends up highlighting the back thigh (this has aggravated me MANY times when shopping for clothes too . I'l l spot a cute pair of shorts and the length is too short to cover the backs of my thighs! Grrr..)
Upside of longer ones is that there's a lot less ride up issues.
I just bought a couple pair of convertible pants in this seasons colors . Maybe they will work well for you too?

Thistle, I'm going to disagree here. I don't think the fit is optimal. I see pull lines around your crotch from the front and under your bum in the back.

The legs are wide enough that if you sized up you might feel even more dowdy. For me keeping the frump factor down involves having a leg that tapers more on my thigh. You might be happier in a different short. I actually put on shorts for the first time this season today, and am wearing an Old Navy denim pair that fits with a little room to spare--not tight--but with tapered legs.

I like the advice of wearing something current on top. I am wearing a mariniere--one of those striped sailor shirts--and felt good about walking the dog!

Good luck, pants shopping is hard.

All you need are some pretty summer wrap tops and modern sandals or those fashion sneakers to keep the frump away. A good fitting pair of denim shorts will be workhorses for hot weather, although I find a denim skirt just as breezy.

I really like them! The fit looks great, not an easy feat for longer shorts. The back pockets are low key and the placement doesn't bother me. All you need is some nice summery tops and you're good to go.

So, several more pairs of jeans are going back as they didn't work either. These shorts were the only item I might consider keeping.

My biggest concern here is frump factor. I sort of feel like my mom in these. While that may be a compliment for many, it is not for me. I love my mom dearly, but she has never care a whit about fashion ever in her life.
