Muffin-
I am normally a size 2 at JCrew for shirts and blazers, and an S or XS is sweaters (veering more towards XS).
For this particular shirt, the smaller size you see is the XS and the bigger size, the S. I also tried on the XXS and it was a perfect fit in the shoulders, but seemed TOO tailored.

I'm going to be a total lemming on this. May I ask then if you went with your normal size or sized down in the end? Does this make sense? I am usually a small or xs in JCrew but thinking I will go with xs based on reviews and the fact that it is oversized to begin with.

Thanks for your votes, ladies!

Dottie --Here's the link:
https://www.jcrew.com/ca/p/wom.....hirt/G9680

I don't have access to a computer right now so can't do a "Find".

Style Fan and Sal -- Doesn't Meghan Markel look great!? I love that shirt on her. At first I thought you meant Angela Markel, but the Invictus Games reference got google back on track.)

Sal-what is the fit issue? Playing around with the buttons seemed to really help for me. I know, we have different torsos though!

I put the shirt through a weekend tour and a work tour, and I think it'll be a workhorse. When I unbutton down to the middle torso, the fit issues seem to work themselves out.

My main concern was that I wanted something kind of puffy through the arms and torso and I think the smaller size DOES give me that.

Really happy with it and I am thinking about getting another next year in white or pink.

You look great in this type of look Smittie (as did Meghan Markle at the Invictus games).

I love this look and it gets me into trouble because I cannot make it work on me. I don't know exactly why. But I love this casual shirt on you - really nice.

I also like the sweater, Will it layer - do you need to layer? I would like this for evenings at home or at friends houses by the fire, drinking red wine and playing cards (not that I do this enough).

Are you keeping the smaller shirt? I actually liked the bigger one, but the smaller still looks oversized, and I defer to Angie's judgement.

That black sweater is super cool. It's one of those things that I might like the idea of better than the actuality of wearing, though.

Smittie - kind of chuckling because I loved the bigger sized shirt!! I don't wear a lot of button downs but I used to. I'm sure it would have gotten thumbs down here, but I love that boyfriend look. The smaller size is more conventionally flattering but I thought the first looked great!! It's whatever you feel fab in, that's what's important. Nice sweater, terrific look, the set of the dolman type sleeve for lack of the proper term and length just need to be comfortable. If it feels great looks really nice but I had clothing you need to fuss with especially sweaters!!

Thanks for the tips smittie. I haven't figured out which of my shirts are the worst offenders for the shoulder seam slippage, but have been noticing it a lot lately. I should do a try on. I'm considering a fashion tape trial if I want to look just so.

No, Smittie. No need for the shoulder seams to line up. It's an oversized look - which I get! Still. You are slight, and the volume on your torso is too much. Of your pics, VB wears it best - and that shirt is smaller than yours.

Angie: are you suggesting a size down to get the shoulder seams to line up in my actual shoulders?

Karen--yes, the shoulder seam pulls to the back. Less dramatically in the bigger size, though. I think it's because my shoulders are set forward. All my knits pull to the back too. There are a few things I do: 1. wear heavy structured toppers like Jean jackets, where the weight of the item causes the garment to stay put. 2. Sleeveless garments work. 3. mandarin collars, where the shirt still pulls to the back, it's just it's not the first thing you notice because the collar is flat. 4. Knitwear (again, everything still pulls to the back but it is less noticeable). 5. High quality blazers with a lot of padding/interfacing that allow my shoulders to rest in a forward position without causing the blazer to wrinkle on top.

Isabelle--I think I'm ok with black near my face. I prefer blue though. Anyway, I don't think I'll get the sweater because the sleeves would be a pain.

Below is the look I was going for.

Are you ok with wearing all black near your face? (I ask because I find it depressing myself, in winter)
Is the sweater made of wool? (You would need the warmth of real wool in your climate)

Re the blue shirt : if I understand correctly, you sized up because you wanted more fluidity? In that case, you need to find a fluid shirt or blouse, because an oversized tailored shirt is too stiff to work (oh yes, I've tried I love oversized tops, but it doesn't work with tailored items, only with knits in my experience).

I was a chicken and waited for Angie to respond. But I also think the shirt is too big. I do like the style on you, but would prefer smaller. The black sweater is a really fantastic style, I vote yes if you can live with the sleeve issue. I like the cropped jumper as well. I think the cropped styles are useful with high rise bottoms.
