This thread has been really interesting for me. I was sort of conflicted about these two jeans too, AJ. I wanted to like them, but somehow they do read as dated to me. But what made it really complicated for me was that I've recently been really infatuated with finding a very faded, light blue boyfriend jean with no holes or distressing. These should have been perfect, right?

Complicating it even more is that fact that I just bought a couple of pairs of AE jeans at Texstyle's suggestion that I love. They are very faded straight legs that I sized up. I'm going to post them soon. I'm waiting for a boyfriend jeans showdown between them, one pair of Current/Elliot boyfriends I ordered, a Gap pair and a few Levis pairs, including a pair of 515 bootcuts. We'll see which ones win.

So, I was trying to figure out what it was about these two that you posted that seemed ho-hum. I was surprised that I didn't like the wash when I looked at it again after reading Una's comment. Oddly, it does seem a little dated. But why? Like I said, I'm in love with lighter washes right now. I can't quite figure out why not the wash on your jeans. I think it may have to do with the contrast between the few darker bits (like around the fly) and the lighter areas. It seems a little '90s stonewashed to me. The AE faded ones that I have don't have the same high/low contrast. They are a little softer and more even.

I think another problem is that these may be labeled as straight leg, but they really are a very full straight leg. They don't just skim your thighs and calves, they are loose. They aren't just boyfriend loose, they are actually loose. I feel like more modern straight leg fits have more contour to them. They go in at your knee, and that bit of curviness in the cut is still there even when they are oversized. That shaping helps keep them feminine. I think a straight leg can work as a boyfriend jean. It just has to be a modern, contoured straight leg.

Finally, I agree that the rear view is a little long and a little mom-ifying. I had this problem with one pair of the Current/Elliot jeans that I ordered and tried on. DH just took one look at the rear view, told me they gave me long butt and I turned right around and took them off. I don't have a great rear view, but it isn't horrible either. The right jeans make it look good. The jeans that gave me long butt just weren't the right cut for me, and I suspect that these are just not the right cut for you.

So, you and I, we are still searching for our boyfriend jeans. I've got a secret, though. I think I'm giving up on boyfriend jeans. I think I'm going for "old friend" jeans. Jeans that look a little slouchy and very worn, like they've been my old friend for many years. We'll see what the forum thinks.

I forgot to mention that when I saw the DKNY on another customer (she wore them out of the store) I asked to try them. I would have walked right by them otherwise!

I like that they have no distressing (i.e. no holes) but the wash has some kind of magic sculpting action that makes me feel slimmer in my slouchier jeans if that makes sense.

I agree about the wash being a "guy's" wash or maybe even veering into mom jean territory. I think us moms have to be particularly careful not to go there! That being said, I like the fit of the 8R; can you pull them down your hips more?

Hm, yeah, I'm not crazy about these. The cut isn't edgy enough to make the wash look current, and the wash isn't current enough to account for there being no dropped crotch. Does that make any sense?

Old Navy has some similar styles/washes to the ones Mia linked. I am also loving medium light washes these days and looking for something like this for summer. In fact, I think my dark wash clamdiggers, a standby for the past several summers, are going to feel a bit dated this year. ON even has some light washes that are borderline iffy for me, but I wonder if the younger generation will see them totally differently than some of us do because they don't have 80s hive mind.

I think these jeans look fine but texstyle had a great point about the evenness of the wash that might make them look a little "classic" and not give you the update you desire.

I almost never buy lighter washes but just acquired the DKNY Soho cropped jean in La Playa wash. I love the lighter hue for Spring and they are insanely comfortable and flying off the shelves at my local store. At $59 canadian what's not to like. I sized up one size for slouchier fit.

I will reiterate my lone plea. I do not have any problems with the wash. As a matter of fact, I have a pair on AE bootcuts, bought last year, in a very similar wash, which I wear a lot comes Spring and Summer. I don't think my jeans are dated.

I still like them for whatever is worth, AJ.

Honestly, I think it is the combo of fit, wash and even the red tab that is triggering "dated" for me. But it's mostly the wash I think. At the same time I agree they look good on you and hey, everything comes back around right?

Oh my, such a strong dislike for the wash! It's slightly faded. Here's the store link (in sky):
http://www.jcpenney.com/dotcom.....rchResults

Here was my thinking...I need to replace a straight leg pair. Since summer is my dominant season, I was thinking a lighter denim would seem more appropriate for the heat. Since slouchy is all the rage now, I thought I'd size up.

So in order to have slouchy, you need tapered legs? So I should look at sizing up on skinny jeans?
Mid-tone blue to dark wash is what I should aim for?

Una - maybe the wash is too "even" on these? And in these photos it is kind of an odd blue but I figured that was maybe just the lighting. I looked at some of my faded blues and they definitely have more variations with distressing/wear in specific areas. These are pretty evenly dyed.

I agree with color problem. It seems really picky, but the return to more faded -ooking jeans is ideally a bit different from this-sort of a darker faded look. That is just my take on it as I'm more sensitive to jeans looking too close to guy jeans or gear jeans or painter/construction wear.

Not mom jeans, IMO. The back view is fine. I thinkt he fit is okay, but not spectacular. More than that, I am not sold on the color. I think the color is dated for women's jeans, and it is the color setting off the mom jean-dar.

I really am liking faded or lighter wash these days - maybe I grew tired of the dark dye transfer issue - or I've been feeling super casual. Or both. I like the contrast of dark tops and faded jeans and I like the spring/summer feeling of faded blues. But I won't give up my dark wash, esp. for dressier jeans occasions.

I actually like them rolled up. I don't think you need a dropped crotch for the look to work, but perhaps you need to belt them looser. I prefer the 8 regular in fit. Tush looks great IMO.

I think you should keep looking. To me, these look more like jeans that are too big than a BF style jean. Like Una said, they look baggy not slouchy, and I think you should keep looking for a slouchy, more distressed jean.

So funny, Alaskagirl, as I feel the same way about that color. Nice to know it's not just me..
I agree also that the look is more baggy not slouchy, so depends on what look you are truly going for...

These are cute on you. However, I'm the opposite of texstyle - I feel the rise is too low for a slouchy look here. These look baggy but not slouchy, depending on what you want. I also (weirdly) think of this particular wash as a true guy's jean color, especially the first one, maybe because it's what my husband wears. It's odd to think of a wash being dated or gender-specific, but I somehow do!

What is the rise on these AJ? I think the ones on the right are more slouchy but the rise seems a bit high to me - I find that the Levis in stores often seem to have higher rise than the ones I buy online. I like an 8 - 8.5" inch rise at the most but seem to prefer more like 7.5" lately.

I prefer the ones on the right, honestly mostly because of the slightly darker color rather than anything else.

I think you should keep looking, mainly because the color is a bit too old fashioned for my own liking. I am thinking if you go slouchy it's almost better to wear a darker hue?

Levis Perfect Waist straight leg jeans from JCPenny. Ignore the shirt. I'm returning to Target.

On the left is 6 petite. The right is 8 regular.

Does the back view look like mom jeans?

No worries if y'all think I should keep looking.

Thanks for your input!
