Catching up on replies I missed in my post-shopping update yesterday...

smittie, you are completely right that the light snakeskins would fill a different role than the black booties, which is why they're still on my mind. I have a suspicion that the shaft may not be as narrow as I'd like, but it's worth a look, at least.

approprio, I think you're right that we notice the little things far more than most other people do!

Good luck with the booties, AndiB! Those look like they should be awesome (I love the look of the higher heel, but I'm trying to stick with heels that are no higher than 3" for everyday shoes... otherwise you would have just tempted me!). Let us know how they work out.

rachylou, ha! You've painted a perfect picture in my head of Urban Hipsterville Farming. And thanks for the validation on the new boots and dress. :)(For the record, if I ever do post an outfit that's wildly inappropriate for the occasion, you have my full permission --and pleas-- to call me on it! But in this case, nope, that was just an attempt to put the boots with an outfit that was in need of shoes.)

Runcarla, yes! I had no qualms buying it because I don't think it'll ever go out of style, and I don't think I'll ever get tired of it. Who knows when I'll have an occasion that calls for it, so maybe I'll just play dress up and take pictures one day. ;)

Ok... now I don’t want y’all to think I’m mocking, these are cute boots and i have some like them... but I feel a need to explain I got mine for life in Hipsterville. I’m talking Hipsterville urban farming. You have chickens and grow tomatoes hanging upside down vertically and then wear these to your job at the Canning Shop, where jalepeno strawberry jam making workshops are held (but you don’t make any jam, you just buy a jar at the end of class) and mason jars are sold only 5 on display at any given time.

I mean, I just wanted to explain I’m not saying you’d muck out the chicken coop in them... Ok. No this’s all a lie. I just wanted to tell y’all about the new canning shop, next to the $500-yarn-doll store...

I just ordered these sock booties. As several mentioned I too am looking for a sleeker slightly taller bootie to wear with skirts and cropped pants and skinnies. If I could find Brooklyn’s that are similar but with some buckles I’d buy them. They’re a few years old. Those are exactly the shape I’ve been seeking and these are close with no buckles. Should be delivered Monday or Tuesday. Fingers crossed!

Thanks, Sterling! I think I may commit to this pair and wear them to work this week. I can imagine them becoming workhorses.

Thanks, Jane! I like the vibe of the side split pair, too, though they won't play as nicely with my office clothing, which is my main need right now. I also already have casual boots that I really like, so I'm debating if these would overlap too much with what I've already got. But because I do like them, they get to stay for a while longer whilst I ponder.

Thank you all. I went to lunch at the mall with my mother today, and wandered into Nordies and Macy's while we were there. After trying on a bunch of options (most of which were also too stiff and clunky and gappy), I found a pair of Naturalizers with a low block heel and a narrow taller shaft in a soft psuedo-suede fabric. I like them, I think they work well with my wardrobe, and they're comfortable... I added pictures to the original post, and would be happy to hear opinions.

I still want to try those snake print Free People boots, but didn't find them at Nordies (and it was super crowded, so I wasn't inclined to stick around... I'll probably order them and see if they work).

Thank you for your wisdom, everyone. It really helped to have encouragement to keep looking.

Kkards homed in on the same comment I did. I think these boots are fab for jeans and casual wear, but they are a little dark and heavy if you’re looking for a dressier vibe for work, etc. I’d recommend something a little more sleek and refined. The height of the shaft contributes to the casual vibe. I would expand your search to higher shaft styles, which always look more streamlined on the ankle and lower calf, reducing the flower pot effect.

Oh, don't talk to me about scrawny ankles! If I worried about the flower pot effect too hard I'd never buy any boots at all. Seriously though, I think it's one of those things we notice ourselves but is rarely as bad as we imagine. Does that make sense?

I think these work. I like the side slit, which definitely mitigates the problem. I find the skinny ankle thing often depends as much on skirt/pants length though.

I think they’re nice and I don’t mind a bit of flowerpot effect.
I do think they’re casual. It is the stacked brown heel and suede that casualizes them. They’re much more casual than the snakeskin ones you posted, so it’s worth considering the level of dressiness you want.
I like the snakeskin ones, but they’re light coloured, so would likely complete a different set of outfits than the black booties, right?

delurked, hm, that probably is what I'm thinking, but I also don't get excited about many shoes (other than a good tough boot, which isn't always situationally appropriate). So I don't always trust my initial reaction. Seriously, I wore the same pair of black booties every work day for several years (terrible for my feet and not a good look, but that was before I started trying to develop a better eye and wardrobe), because I disliked shoes and shoe shopping so much.

rachylou, thank you... this is why I love getting help from the forum! I wouldn't have thought to describe my style as slick or downtown, but I think you captured why I'm wondering if these will work with my wardrobe. And you're totally right about the clunky... I end up compromising sometimes because it's hard to find more streamlined things that are comfortable and not astronomically expensive, but it's worth continuing the hunt.

Jenni, thank you. One of the pairs of Clarks was a true workhorse for years (even had to get the heels repaired after I wore them down), but my feet are fussier now and the heel height and angle isn't as tolerable. I bought the second pair because they were similar to the first, but there's something different about how they're built that makes them terribly uncomfortable. I think I'll be right there with you in relief once I finally clear them out and don't have to feel guilty about not wearing, or limping when I do wear!

Sterling, yes, rachylou and many other wise ladies are also talking me out of these. I think I'll have to do something I haven't done in years.... actually go to a physical store and try on a bunch of options. Thank you for your wisdom and well wishes as always!

I'm hearing a lot of Forum Members suggesting you could do better. I still like them, but RachyLou's comment resonates strongly with me. I agree with her assessment of your 'downtown style.' I am not sure I see 'urban farm' in the booties though, but her eye is probably sharper. The key is experimentation with your existing wardrobe. Best wishes finding what works for you.

Until YLF I had never even noticed the "flowerpot effect" on booties, which I own many of. I have slim ankles and it may even exist for some of my own. But I personally feel too old to wear booties with bare legs. I have a few spider veins and like the look of my booties with my ponte pants mostly. On younger legs I think bare legs can look awesome. I'm not enamoured of these on you. Pic 1 I feel makes the flowerpot effect very obvious. Pics 2-4 less so, but I think you could get something better. I'm sorry the Clarks are uncomfortable. My Clarks are great. With my recent clearing of 2 uncomfortable pairs of high heels with the forum's help, I can only say how relieved I feel to have them gone.

You know, I’m finding these boots a bit clunky for your overall slender frame. I also find your style slicker than they are. You have a ‘downtown’ element to your style, but these are kinda country in an urban farm kinda way. I think you should look for sock booties too; there’s a lot on offer right now...

I said to myself “they’re ok”. Sounds like that’s also what you’re saying to yourself. Is that good enough?

Gigi, thank you. I do like these, but am not 100% convinced yet, so I'll hold onto them (unworn and returnable) and try some sock booties to see if I can find a more slam-dunk winner.

Sterling, thank you... that's reassuring to know that the fit looks okay to you. They're a little tight to pull on (I've gotten used to boots with zippers), but once on, they feel very comfortable in the short try-on sessions so far. The slit is deep enough that I'd either have to go barefoot, wear no-show socks (which I do with most pumps anyway), or just embrace showing off socks or tights. All workable options, I think.

Janet, an excellent point, thank you. I'm fortunate that I can afford to go over my limit without any undue financial harm, and I'm potentially willing to in order to replace old favorites that aren't comfortable anymore... but I do want to make sure they're right. Since they're from Nordstrom and they seem to be patient with returns, I can hold onto them for a bit while I try other options. That'll also give me some time to try them with various pants/skirts/dresses/tights and see if they'd be likely to carry their weight in my wardrobe.

I like Janet's idea of sock booties, which will hug the ankle better; they'll look more like an extrension of your leg. I have very skinny calves and ankles too, and I personally would consider the gap on the pair shown to be too big for my taste.

I like them, but honestly I think you should investigate those other options you mentioned — sock-style boots will look more streamlined with skirts and dresses and have a slightly dressier look. I am normally a big enabler when it comes to boots, but you mention this being a special budgetary allowance and I think that warrants careful consideration.

They look fabulous on you. I agree the gap is mitigating. In fact, I think the gap is rather fascinating. How do they feel on?

I've reached the end of my annual wardrobe budget, but I may make an exception to replace a fall/winter wardrobe essential. I have two pairs of old Clarks shooties that I think it's time to retire... the shape and heel of one pair makes the balls and arches of my feet ache as soon as I put them on (which is a shame, because they're cute and barely worn), and the other is slightly less uncomfortable but still not great.

I'm on the lookout for replacements that are more comfortable and won't look silly with bare legs/tights for skirts and dresses as well as pants, and I'm trying to figure out if this pair works on my scrawny ankles. There's a bit of a gap, but I *think* the slit helps mitigate the flowerpot effect... am I right, or is that just wishful thinking?

I sort of wish that they were slightly dressier, but they'll work for less-dressed-up business casual days, and smart casual. I'm also eyeing some sock boots for a dressier option that may hug closer to narrow calves/ankles, possibly the Free People find, in either the snake print ( love snake prints and would happily use this kind as a sorta-nude neutral) or black... if anyone has an opinion or experiences or alternative suggestions, I'm open to hear them!

UPDATE:

Thanks for encouraging me not to settle, all. I ventured into an actual physical shopping store for the first time in forever and tried on a bunch of options, and I think I have a winner: Naturalizer Daley (pictures 5 and on). There's still a tiny gap, but it's very slight. They're also very comfortable, the shaft material is super soft, and they have a heel that's just under 2 inches, so very walkable. I tried them with a bunch of skirts and I think they worked with all of them (only one photographed). And I think they work with cropped pants, too (shown). What do you think?

And as a bonus, I've also been on the lookout for about 6 months for a black-tie appropriate dress, so I don't have to scramble if an event comes up... this isn't factored into my budget, since it's a special occasion item that I intend to hold onto for a long time, and when I need it, I'll really need it. I happened to walk past a mannequin with this lovely silver cowl-neck dress (in the Finds), and it fits like a dream, so it followed me home. I need to get it hemmed a tiny bit, but otherwise it's perfect and checks all the boxes I love: elegant interesting neckline, it's simple but not boring, it can accommodate a regular bra (with some attention to strap placement), and the fabric is beautifully slinky and drapey.
