I would have sent them back too. Who needs sensitive boots?

But those sneakers are dynamite.

Smittie- good luck finding a pair of boots you like as well as these; ones that will cooperate with the realities of life. I have worn Ecco for decades and am surprised by this misstep.

Also, historically, Eccos have been great for narrow leaning, low volume feet with an average toe box and narrower heels. I have been the same size in them forever. That consistency has changed. They now have many styles that run very wide (though all are marked medium) and a full size down was the right length in some styles. I couldn't keep many on my feet. Good news if you have ruled them out as too narrow. The quality of the scaled shoes seems an anomaly for the brand, though somethings are changing.

I was for keeping until I saw Eliza's response. At first I thought the SA just meant they were not boots for 'weather', but rather for 'fashion', which is self-evident to me as a Canadian. But sounds like they aren't even for 'wearing', which is a deal-breaker. It's too bad because it can be tricky to find pretty and interesting footwear with a sturdy heel.

Eliza, thanks for chiming in. the durability of the scales is the issue I was thinking of. Just touching the boots the wrong way seems like it would cause the boots to "flake".
As you say, cross your feet might cause damage.

So they're going back.

DJP: I'm not that hard on my shoes, actually. I do get wear on the back tread and a little at the front top, but when I compare to others, my shoes stay in good condition for a long time.

Suz and AK: I'm still thinking about the Suz's snakeskin ones. The texture seems durable on those.

Yes, Jaileen, those are the boots and There you go: they say they're delicate. Makes you wonder why Ecco would put out a shoe that needs disclaimers. Ecco has a 1 year warranty and it seems like these would not make it a year.

They look great but I would not wear such delicate boots. But I am the sort of person that would ruin them even in the house. I do have some old python boots that wear beautifully but am scared of anything less tough than that.

Wow, those are gorgeous. I saw them (online, not in person) and was also tempted but ordered the other ones instead since I wanted blue. I think mine are fine to spray but they don't have the scaly texture.

They look great on you, so that's not the issue. I guess it really comes down to when/ how you want to wear and whether you'll get enough use from them.

Smittie- just bought a gorgeous pair of Ecco oxfords in this scaly finish at an outlet store. The most beautiful deep aubergine color. Sadly, I'd say pass. I had no warning from the sales staff, but those scales are beyond delicate. I found the right back heel had flaking problems after one 10 minute drive. The scales rise and loosen individually under very delicate use. I am not happy because I love these shoes and had big plans for them. Any contact with anything seems to damage them (even crossing ankles). Hope this helps; I feel your pain as the boots are lovely, too.

ETA: my troubles were not weather related-just wearing them on a dry sunny, not particularly active afternoon was too much for them.

I think the real question here is ; are you hard on your shoes/boots? If I had a dollar for every time I heard another person wistfully say " no suede winter boots for me, I live in Vancouver" I'd be very rich indeed! And yet........ I have loads of suede boots, some many years old. My BFF is very hard on her shoes/boots and things barely last her a season while my stuff seem to go on & on. I think some of us are like Lady Mary and some of us are Anna...... for me taking care of my boots is part of the pleasure of having an interest in style and fashion. If you love the boots (they are gorgeous on you) and your inner lady's maid is alive and well then go for it!

Smittie, is this your boot?

http://us.shop.ecco.com/shape-.....omen-boots

This is in the description on Ecco's website:

"This shoe has a particularly sensitive finishing; hence it is not recommended to use any protector spray"

That's probably what the SA was referring to. BTW, Zappos didn't mention this in their online description.

Burgundy sneakers - I am in heaven! Where do I get them? Why didn't I think of this?????
I don't know what to advise you about the boots. They look great. I have a pair of ankle boots with a scaly back (much like the ones in this photo but in black) and I have worn them in the rain with no issues. I did spray them with protective spray but no-one told me not to. I think if you kept them you would just have to treat them like suede and avoid wearing them on rainy days. That probably wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.

Hi there,
bj1: I need dress up boots more than indoor outdoor boots (although if Ecco is suggesting a shoe be used exclusively indoors, that seems silly). I have a pair of fairly dressy knee-high boots for real weather situations.
Elle: my climate is neither overly rainy nor super dry.
Firecracker: yes, I wouldn't really be walking outside much in these. I would be walking to and from the car (seems sad to say this).
Staysfit and approprio: I like your name-nonsense approach to this predicament! :-)
Jaileen: Your explanation about the weatherproofing not getting under the scales sounds very plausible.
GradF: I'm no so concerned about the weatherproofing so much as the durability of the scaly bits. They seem to lift a bit.
Janet: thanks. I love these boots so much which is why it's a tough call to keep/return.

About the boots, it will all depend on your climate and tolerance for babying the boots. They are beautiful and dressy but seem like a lot of work. I would probably pass but we get a fair amount of rain in the winter and I don't like to worry about my boots.

For work and going out, these could work, as long as you don't have a lot of walking in the rain during your work commute. If you are driving and just walking from car to building, I would go for it. Even short walks in the rain shouldn't be a problem. The only time I really worry about my non-weatherproof footwear is long walking in pouring rain. Even with an umbrella, the shoes can get soaked in those conditions.

They are very pretty and look like a nice fit at the ankles. Also love your burgundy high-tops and the whole outfit with them!

I wonder if the SA's advice was because protective spray wouldn't reach under the scales. That was good of him to give the warning. Do you live where it rains a lot?

Lovely as they are, I would pass. I have a gorgeous pair of boots with this very problem. They are permanently benched and I can't bring myself to get rid of them. Frustrating. I'd say go looking for a pair that suits your requirements.

I don't have experience with that kind of texture in a boot, but they look amazing! I have a Longchamp wallet with a bit of a scaly texture, and I was worried it would be delicate, but it's wearing extremely well. Of course I have no idea whether the actual material/leather is like your boots. I like your high-tops too.

I am hunting for high shaft dressy boots. I want to wear them to work and for special occasions.

I found these boots from Ecco, but as I was entering my credit card into the machine, the SA tells me that the boot is an "indoor boot" (i.e.: can be worn outside but not in inclement weather)and that I cannot use weatherproofing spray on them because it distorts the colour. I can wear them in the rain but I must wipe them down afterwards . He also told me I get some cleaner for free as a result of not being able to spray them.

So, these boots sound very delicate to me. Do you think it's because of their scaly texture? Does anybody have experience with scaly boots?

I wouldn't be wearing these in the snow but I would like to "wear the heck out of them" in the fall.

Also, here is a WIW with my new Ecco high top burgundy sneakers! These are the same as my white Eccos except in high top format!
