I tried them both on at home and decided to return the brown ones. DH really didn't like them and even though I did, I couldn't quite picture myself wearing them. I decided not to let the hand wash rec scare me away from the black ones, though, as I know I will wear them. It is wise, as others have mentioned, to turn coated jeans inside out before washing them. FWIW, freezing makes bacteria go dormant, but it doesn't kill them, and they become active as soon as you wear the jeans again. While neither of them are coated denim, I own a pair made by another brand. I've practically lived in the things for well over a year and machine-washed them regularly. They still look and feel good as new. They were fine. I'm going to pull them out and see what the tags says. I never considered hand washing them. Do you wash after every wear? It's my favorite brand and the prices were great. ($9 and $18) When I got home I realized both are hand wash. Is that for real? I mean, I suppose they are, but I can't fathom actually doing so. Is there any work around or should i return? my life style is NOT conducive to hand wash only. </p>
