Hi Peacechick --

I know I'm late to comment but I'm so glad you're keeping this both because in your weather it's completely practical and because it looks so great on you!

I get the reluctance given the household frugal factor (faction?) but this coat will earn its keep fast.

Plus you can remind your husband that if you have to limit yourself to one man, you can never settle for one coat [etc!]....

I'm glad you're keeping it because it really does look beautiful on you.

I think I have the "only one winter coat" mindset ingrained in me from childhood too. Why is that so hard to break? I've gotten myself up to one heavier wool coat, a thinner transitional wool coat, and a puffer, but I think I could honestly use one or two more, even for my much milder non-Canadian winters.

I'd bet DH just sees 3 coats in your closet and, because he is a DH, doesn't realize that only one is functional. So now we're down to the red one, which doesn't warm your legs at all, is pretty casual, and is definitely a statement color. I vote you do that cull and keep your pretty puffer to fill many holes at once!

I'm glad you're keeping it! As far as I can tell, it will be your only full length winter coat that fits, so not extravagant at all. And who knows, now that you have such a warm, comfy, flattering, go-with-everything coat, you might find yourself going for more walks/outings!

Well, Peacechick, even my super frugal paternal grandmother thought a woman needed two winter coats when she and my grandfather were introduced to Canadian winters--one for everyday and one for "good". This was a woman whose entire wardrobe consisted of three dresses (two everyday, one "good"), one skirt, a cardigan, and two pairs of shoes (again, one everyday and one for "good"--"good" implying that a woman needs to look presentable when representing her family in public, I'm thinking). No boots because she wore those ugly rubber "overshoes" over her shoes in winter; how she was able to remain upright on those slippery things, I'll never know!

Oh, and that skirt was a birthday present from my seamstress Mom; its presence in her closet always led to her tsk-tsking about being so extravagant. But she never waivered about needing those two winter coats!

Suz and Astrid, I think you've both hit the nail on the head, it does seem to be a thing of pride, almost bragging rights, to only own one winter coat. And weird that our frugality about our outerwear doesn't apply to other clothes, electronics and entertainment. It must hark back to the past when outerwear was very costly.

Oh Mr Peacechick told me from the beginning that it was up to me (he's pretty enabling) and also added that he thought it was nice. So I don't have to show him the thread, just say that I've decided

I totally get where you're coming from, because everyone in my family always had one coat or jacket to take them through winter and it being practical was the most important thing. And you only bought a new one when the old one was worn out or too small. Even when I joined YLF I thought I'd just find one fab new coat and that would be it. I've only started to realise that it will be alright and even necessary to have more than one coat this year! Suz is right, you're seen out and about in your coat very often and having some decent outerwear options matters. So I'm glad you're going the keep the puffer - it looks fabulous. :)

It is almost a point of pride (it seems) among some of us who live in these climates to get through winters in one outer wear garment.

When I was growing up, the issues were financial. Nobody could afford multiple winter coats (especially for children who grow so quickly) so you made do with one and that was it!

When I joined YLF (at the age of over 50) I was still living in a mentality like that. Well, okay, I had a short "gear" type jacket bought on super sale from the boys' department at MEC 15 years back...plus my one winter "coat" - whatever that might be. I even felt a little bit guilty that I had these two. After all, I "should" be able to get by on just one!

Well, I joined YLF following a big weight change. I needed a whole new wardrobe -- there was no getting around it. And in my first year here I promptly laid out the money for TWO winter coats (one wool and one knee length puffer).

It almost killed me to spend so much. One wasn't even on sale, and this represented a big chunk of my budget and meant I had to buy most of my other clothes -- including my winter boots -- on super sale or by thrift/ consignment. So it wasn't an easy decision -- it did mean doing without in other areas.

But now we are on winter 3, and those coats still look sensational and perform really well for me. Meanwhile I've been able to work slowly towards improving the quality of the rest of my wardrobe. And believe it or not, I am also slowly adding to the coat wardrobe. Two is not enough! I bought a short pea coat last year for wearing with pants and in less frigid temperatures. I would like at least one more coat -- possibly two. A brightly coloured pea coat and perhaps another puffer in a lighter colour.

Now, I'm firmly in the camp that feels that most Canadians need and deserve a veritable wardrobe of coats. Especially those of us who live in metropolitan areas and walk a lot. When my daughter was little (in a snuggly or stroller) that certainly described me. I was walking all. the. time. (Often hoping she'd fall asleep in the stroller ....)

A puffer is great with baby in tow because -- it is washable. It is lightweight. It is warm. It covers and niftily disguises a multitude of "sins." It is versatile. And this one is stylish enough to give you confidence when you go into a store, a government office, a preschool, a library -- all the kinds of places you might go.

In fact, along with Adelfa, I'd hazard a guess that as a MOTG you are seen more often in your coat than most working parents are seen in theirs -- and this matters.

You will not regret this. And please show this to Mr. Peacechick. And promise him that we won't urge you to spend irresponsibly or stupidly.

Adelfa, thanks for reminding me that even though I am currently stuck on the sofa most of the day with my bundle of squirm, this will not always be the case!

Also just because DH and my brother (who lives in Boston and who also told me I didn't need another jacket) choose to wear one piece of gear all winter long doesn't mean I have to do it too. My happiness factor will be so much higher running around town in my new yummy puffer.

I have to comment again! I don't understand your comments about not going out much. I was a SAHM for 13 years and I went all kinds of places, such as to the grocery store, Costco, the stores where I purchased clothes and shoes for my kids, my kids' school, piano lessons, the pediatrician, the dentist, the orthodontist, ballet lessons, soccer practice, church on Sundays, church on Wednesday nights, coffee or lunch with friends, school field trips.... In fact it was kind of a disaster when I got the stomach flu and couldn't go out because so much of my life involved going places and taking the kids places. I take it that had I been a SAHM in Eastern Canada, I would have needed a warm coat for several months of the year every time I set foot outside the house. So I'm thinking that unless you have some kind of limitations which affect your ability to leave your house--in which case please forgive me for assuming otherwise--you *do* go out!

Gaylene and Suz and everybody, I know, it should be such a no brainer! But looking at my DH who wears his one winter jacket all through the season, I question why I need so many coats when I'm mostly at home. I run warmer than him too, DH is the cold one when I'm walking around with jackets unzipped.

But I want a knee-length puffer and I shall keep it! I don't know why I'm giving myself a harder time over outerwear than I do about my other clothes, of which I have far too many. I guess because it generally costs more. But then again, it's all anyone sees of you when you're out.

So thank you all, I'm keeping it!

Definite keep. I speak as a Chicagoan, so I know my winters!

You need something longer, and a puffer is extremely warm, extremely lightweight, and extremely practical for a SAHM. This one is also extremely attractive!

We wear puffers in the West too! It still gets cold and I wear my puffer all winter. Keep, it looks great on you!

Gaylene, thank you...I was sitting here, looking at the snowy landscape of these photos, looking at the coat options currently available (or not really available, since one doesn't fit (even though it looks great on you -- the camel wool coat), one is super casual and doesn't cover your thighs, and the other one is 14 years old and face it, well past its prime....and I was scratching my head, looking at this stylish and flattering coat, thinking, hmmm....You got it at that amazing Bay sale? So the price was good.....and you want to know if you should keep it......THIS IS EVEN A QUESTION???

Honestly, unless you know you are moving to the west next year, keep this. And even then, I would keep it. You never know when you might need to go up to Whistler.

I hope you'll hang onto the wool coat in case it fits next year. But you need this puffer.

You definitely need something additional that is more grown up looking than the short sporty red-pink jacket. And this new one looks very nice on you, to boot. There are needs and then there are psychological needs.

Yay for all the yays! I think I have almost made up my mind to keep it now. I got it on sale so I feel like it won't be easy to find another coat that ticks so many of my checkboxes at this price point again.

If I keep it, I will cull #4 but keep #5 as gear for winter festivals where sledding and snowshoeing may be involved, and postpone the decision on #6 till next year.

OK, let me get this straight. You have a hip-length, bright-colored, sporty jacket that currently is the only piece of warm outwear that looks good and fits you properly. You also live in Eastern Canada, a place where winter often starts at the end of October and finishes sometime in early May. You are wondering if you ought to get a second, longer warm coat that will go over a dress and will cover your legs a bit more if you are out walking.

Yes.

I say keep. The new one is in an entirely different category than #4. You live in Canada, after all. And if a coat can last you 14 years, this one will be justified on that account too.

I like the new puffer. I think it bridges gear and proper coat territory, is machine washable, and flattering. This assumes you got it at a good price. I would cull 4 or 5 as they are less flattering. I would keep the last coat because if you do move back West, it would work well and looks like a classic in a nice color for you. (I live in California and would wear a coat like that.)

I have numerous coats and don't even live in a cold climate, but love a good coat as it adds instant warmth and polish in the Winter.

Well, in Canada I would sure talk myself into needing both a sporty colorful parka and a more serious, neutral one.
