Thanks, everyone, for your input. I returned the Melins this morning. I do recommend that others try them, though, as they are very nice and seem well-made; they're just not right for me and my feet.

I am planning to wear the Everybody's for a moderately dressy dinner this weekend!

Since both boots are adorable and look great on you. I would go with the ones that fit the best, regardless of what everyone else says. But since you asked, I personally like the second pair as they fit tighter at the ankle, and for skinny-ankled me me at least, that is harder to find.

I was just about to reply when I saw your last post and that's exactly what I was going to say! I might be projecting because I have the same sensitivity about my calf width, but I think the Everybodys elongate your lines. I love them on you. I think under pants the Melins are nicer-looking but you don't need 2 pairs of black booties. Great choice!

Hmm, interesting - the vote seems to be split pretty evenly!

I think enough people have weighed in now that I can tell you that the one I prefer is #1. As several of you have mentioned, this pair is much more my style. They are also much more comfortable - the Melins are a bit tight over the toes but have excess room in the instep (I have narrow heels and low insteps but the front of my foot is more like a medium width, plus I have a bunion on one foot) and I know patent does not stretch much. The Everybodys are very comfy to start with, and the leather (regular leather, not patent) is really soft.

The other reason that I don't like the Melins for me is that, while I like the way they look from the side and under pants, I HATE the way they look from the front with a skirt. They hit right at the narrowest point of my ankle (right above the bone) and since the top is a straight horizontal line, I think that it emphasizes the big difference in width between my calf and my ankle (FWIW, my calf is almost twice the circumference of my ankle). I realize that this is something that I'm probably overly sensitive about. That said, I much prefer how the ankle of the first pair looks with the higher sides and lower center, and I think it makes my leg look more proportional.

Anyway, I'm glad nobody seems to hate the first pair, since I'm pretty sure I'm keeping them.

ETA: Also, the everybodys will be more versatile for me, as they will work with skirts and under pants, and I think I can tuck skinnies into them as well so long as I wear matching socks.

LOL back at K! I am planning to get them, too, but I have to wait until they give us an extra % off at work for holiday shopping. *evil grin*

To explain my vote, I thought that #1 would compete more with the other layers and embellishments in your outfits. Although I guess without styling this is just a theory that may be disproven. I also have a personal bias in favor of shoes that make the feet appear smaller.

Both are great. I think the first pair would be my choice. They will work with skirts and dresses and under pants. You could tuck skinnies into them but it can be hard to do (I have boots a little similar). The second pair have a more edgy appeal but I am not sure.

For you, I like 1-5 best. That pair seems like it goes better with what I know of your style. Your style is a little girly, very layered, very complex. The second pair 6-10 is fabulous too, but I don't see you all that often in menswear inspired outfits or really streamlined, modern edgy (Ironkurtin style) outfits and the second pair seem to cry out for those. But, as jj said, comfort rules!

ETA: LOL! I almost said pair 2 was perfect for Rae's menswear inspired outfits! Seems like I pegged that one!!!

Comfort rules. I actually like the look of 1-5 a little better from the front. It's all the elastic with the patent that's throwing me on the others (but the flash probably contributes to the contrast more). I like the non-gap of the Melin's, but they are a lot of patent. However the Everybody's look longer from the side. Ok I'm offically no help.

The two pairs of dressy black booties I ordered last week have both arrived. Pics 1-5 are the Everybody Gallas, and pics 6-10 are the Melin boots that Angie recommended. I have not styled them at all (please forgive the ugly loungewear) but did try each with a skirt and pants.

I do have a strong preference for one pair both in terms of style and of comfort but I will not tell you which one until later.
