Thanks everyone.
Bijou, I tried on the velvet jacket. It's really beautiful.
Lyn, I hope not. I am on the watch for that.
Angie, I think so. I had something similar done to a skirt recently. I will take another look today and see how I feel about it.

YLF!!! Love the colors and print, and think it fits you well- NOT overhelming (in the body) -still you do have to make peace with the roomy fit and should feel good in it. My only concern is the wide sleeves. I know they are a fresh thing but am a bit biased on their everyday practicality.

Oh, and is viscose the quickly wrinkling kind...?

A shame that the Cue floral dresses are too short, because there are some beautiful ones there! I have been deliberately staying away from Cue stores, because I would surely succumb to their charms. This is a difficult one, I do love your choker.

Thanks everyone for the kind words, comments and suggestions. This has really helped to clarify my thoughts.
Like many here, I like the flowy style of the dress. I am always drawn to boho, flowy pieces. But I think this is just too flowy for me. My style goal for 2017 is to develop a signature style. And I think I am happiest in outfits that have some structure. I think if the dress had no sleeves, or had fitted sleeves, it would be just structured enough for me (hey, new acronym: "JSE"!). But the combination of the bell sleeves and the A-line silhouette is too much volume (for me). I suspect the photos do not adequately demonstrate how A-line the dress is. It's not the waist that's the issue, it's the volume from the waist to the hemline. It really flares out. I do have a couple of swing tops, but they are sleeveless and I wear them with flares (fitted at the thigh), hence they are "JSE".
AndiB: I agree fitted sleeves would be better in this case. But I can't see this dress being adapted that way. Thanks for the suggestion.
Angie, Chewy: Thank you for the suggestion, but I don't think I would fit a smaller size. The dress is quite fitted around my shoulders and upper back. It's only roomy on the bottom half.
Bijou: I think you could be right. A dark floral shift dress is my big want for this season. I got excited about those cue floral dresses but they are all way too short for me. So now I am starting to get a FOMO thing happening. It's at this point that I could end up settling for something I shouldn't. It's a titanic battle between PPP and FOMO!
Jenn: Yes, everything is viscose. I don't mind viscose but I have had mixed results with washing. Another reason alterations may not be worthwhile.
Staysfit: yes, knee length shift dress = unicorn. That is definitely influencing me.
Sally: no worries. You are a very thoughtful and diligent responder. I have noticed. Thanks!
As per Sally's suggestion, I am going to have a think about it. ASOS gives you 30 days to return. But leaning towards return.
Thanks again to everyone for taking the time to comment.
And all is not lost. I got this super cute choker with my order. I am keeping that

Very pretty dress, Brooklyn. Spanner here: I think the dress looks better on you as it is, rather than with the volume reined in. Since you prefer a more fitted silhouette, I vote return and find a dark floral in your preferred style.

I really love the dress on you Brooklyn, but think it comes down to fabric quality. If paying for an alteration (which I guess could be $30-$40) you have to judge whether it is worthwhile.

I like the 70s vibe and it definitely is a dress made for tall boots.

Sometimes a day or two waiting can determine your feelings. I ordered four sweaters last week, and liked them all. Three days later I tried them all on and have decided to keep only one (I never planned to keep them all, only one-two). I decided why they were all "good" really only one was "great".

I did comment on your recent tall boots post - I loved all those looks. I lost the comment somehow - I hope you are feeling better now.

Is the material good enough to be worth altering? I do really like that pattern, and it's hard to find great florals these days that aren't rayon or viscose.

An alteration would work brilliantly on this Brooklyn (love it BTW). A bit nipped in down the sides or even a couple of vertical darts through the midriff/waist/upper hip area would work too.

I like the way it looks as-is -- you are slender enough that this roomy style looks fab on you. If you'd be more comfortable with a bit more fitted waist, I could see an alteration working to rein in a little of the volume.

I have tried having straight dresses altered to be a little more fitted, but I hasn't worked well for me. I just tried a dress from Anthro and returned it because it would need just that kind of alteration and I decided it wasn't worth the risk.

I've returned a couple bell sleeve tops this season already . . . Just too much fabric, and too romantic for my style I guess. That said, I actually like the volume of the dress, love the color! but volume dress plus volume sleeves is too much for me... I'd take in the sleeves and keep the dress volume.

This looks beautiful on you - the colours of the fabric are lovely and with your height I don't think an alternation is necessary, you wear the dress well. However, there are two cons:
1. The fabric. If you want a silk or a fabric with more texture, they are definitely out there. This seems to be the season of the dark floral dress - and no alteration will change the fabric issue.
2. If you are going to alter it, it may be that you end up spending as much on this as what you would for a dress in a more luxurious fabric.
I vote return.
It is the beginning of the season and stock is still coming into stores. The main time I regret purchases is when I keep something less than perfect and then subsequently find 'the one', only to either not buy it (because it was a duplication of something that I had) or buying it and feeling guilty about the lesser dress that gets rarely worn.

I think it looks beautiful even without the alteration and I like it with those taupe boots too. But I can see that you prefer more fitted dresses- see, I love swing dresses as they hide the mid-section, but you don't need to hide yours. The floral pattern is so pretty. I would be keeping it, but then how many times do you think you might wear it and especially if unable to be altered ?

I love the floral pattern and the length. Like you, I am tall and have a hard time finding anything long enough, especially in this particular style dress. I am not familiar with Asos return policy. How long can you hold it before you need to return it? I would be tempted to keep it and have it altered. If it doesn't work, it would be disappointing, but I still think it's worth the risk depending on the cost of the alterations.

An update: I sent the dress back. PPP prevails (on this occasion!) Thanks everyone for the help. Onward :)

Hi all

I am looking for a dark floral shift dress for winter. I have been looking at this one on ASOS for a while. I hesitated because it is not quite the shape that I am after. But I was buying something else so I decided to try it out.

Anyway, I like it. But it is very voluminous. More a swing dress than a shift dress. As I am tall, it feels like a lot of fabric, especially with the bell sleeves.

But I was wondering if I should consider having it taken in at the sides to give it a more shift like shape. Or is that courting disaster? Should I just return it?

Pics 1-3 show dress as is. In pics 4-5, I am holding in some of the volume at the back to indicate how I would prefer it to look.

I would probably wear it with tights and black high shaft booties in winter. I couldn't show that because my black booties are at work. So I just went with my taupe boots. Also, I have a virus and look even paler than usual so I am trying to disguise that.

Pros
I like the dark floral pattern (I am picky about floral)
I like the bell sleeves (but they are not essential from my point of view)
The length is good (knee length dresses are very hard for me to find)
High neckline is good for me (a lot of dresses seem to be v neck this season)

Cons
Too much volume (for my taste) and altering it could be risky
I might find something I like better (I would prefer silk or a fabric with more texture, this is viscose)

I already have a dark floral velvet dress from last year. Shown in finds. It is semi fitted and sleeveless, so it is sufficiently different I think.

Thoughts? I am undecided. But I don't think I like it enough as is (without alteration).

Ps. I have included both the tall and regular versions in finds in case anyone is interested. Thanks in advance.
