Suz, they are the Kamik Scarlet. I don't know about Canadian shipping but the prices on Sierra Trading Post are all over the place depending on which email is used to link to the website. They send out LOTS of emails once you sign up to receive them.

Cool boots! I think the newer snow boots are a little bulkier because they are meant to make more of a statement. The fit seems good. Make sure you try them with your thick socks to be sure. I just got a pair of Teva snow boots and thought they were too big until I tried them with my thick winter socks.

I find a better way to assess length is to push your toes as far forward as they will go while wearing the socks you would wear with the footwear. If what you see behind your heel is two fingers in width, IMHO they are too long because you may find yourself with balance problems while climbing stairs. If less than two fingers, you are good to go!

Those are the cutest boots I've seen in that style! I wish I could get DD20 interested in boots like those. I live in California, but her college is near Chicago with lake effect weather. Thank goodness she came home over the holidays because she is more fixated on fashion boots and clothing than sensible footwear etc.

Cute gear boots with an oomph of style! As long as you can walk comfortably in them, I'd vote to keep. K is right in saying that it's the dead air space between your foot and your boot which insulates you from the cold. The warmest pair of leather ski gloves I ever owned were a soft leather with floppy, loose fingers and only a very light insulation layer. Those gloves kept my fingers toasty even when the temperature dipped to -4F/-20C unlike a more expensive glove with a thicker layer of insulation, but a closer fit, which I had bought previously in a desperate attempt to keep my hands warm while skiing. It was all that dead air space in those floppy fingers that made such a huge difference.

Such wisdom here! I wasn't aware of the concept of extra space to help with insulating. My husband gave them a thumbs up without hesitation. (Though I don't typically ask for his opinions because noticing what I wear just isn't part of his DNA) I wore them around the house today and they are quite comfortable, plenty of room for my feet to spread out.

K., my thumb *is* on top of my toe, so the end of my toe is at the side of my thumb closest to the end of the boot.

I'm still not sure at this point, but I do already have an outfit I'd like to create with them - my cream Gap chunky sweater and cream BR jeans.

They look big, but not TOO big. If you don't get boots that are a little big looking, chances are there's not enough insulation and cushioning to keep your foot warm and comfy. And I think that getting a pair in red adds a stylistic element.

I love the red!

My Sorels are huge on me and it's fine. I bought them that way to wear extra socks. (I bought them 20 years ago when I lived in New England. Out here they would be absurdly warm.) I do feel a bit clompy in them but unless you're tripping over your feet a lot, I think it's fine.

(By the way, since shoe size and height aren't perfectly correlated, there's really very little chance that a shoe two sizes bigger than your usual will look weird to anyone but yourself! Our eyes are accustomed to seeing a wide range of combinations on others, and only one on ourselves.)

ETA: I love that you call them clodhoppers. That's the word I grew up with for work boots, but it had slipped my mind and it's great to be reminded.

I agree that they are cute! They are no more clunky than this type of shoe generally is. They typically are sized larger than their insole so that you have dead air separating you and contact with the outer boot. I'm pretty sure that that's part of how they improve their insulating effect. With that said--that does seem to be an awful lot of space from your toe to the end if the bottom of your thumb is hitting the end of your toe. If your thumb is on top of your toe, with the top edge of it (the edge closest to the toe of the boot) marking the end of your toe, then I think you are good to go. FWIW, I see the clunkiness of this as part of the style. They aren't intended to be polished boots, so the larger, more outdoorsy gear fit is a-okay to my eye!

A pair of winter boots suitable for slush has been on my list this year. I'm kicking myself for not buying a pair of red Sorels at Rack a while back so I've been on the hunt for a similar pair. These Kamiks came yesterday from Sierra Trading Post and ended up costing only about $40 including shipping. Some reviews said to size up and they weren't available in my usual 8, so these are a 9. They're comfortable, and between adding an insole and snug lacing they don't slip around on my foot but there is plenty of room yet for thick socks. I'm not trying to make any best dressed lists with these boots, but do they LOOK too big? Like they would keep me from tipping over in a wind gust?

Picture 1 shows where the end of my big toe is - at the side of my thumb closest to the toe of the boot.

Picture 2 is just for comparison of clunkiness with my current old short snow boots.

Thoughts? Thanks a bunch!
