Thanks, all. I am definitely going to try the two-button version to compare, but will wait to see if I can get it in store next week when my coupon is good.

Unfrumped, no I'm not in a big hurry. I'm not really going to try to apply for jobs until next fall, but I want to have the suit thing sorted out well before then, just in case something unexpected comes up. But, to Makrame's point, I could make a perfectly good mismatched suit right now with these pants (which I am keeping) and my grey Nanette Lepore jacket. The Nanette jacket is maybe slightly less conservative than I would like for interviews, but it will do just fine.

MsKatieKat, no unfortunately this style is not available in petite anymore. In fact, I can only seem to find it in tall right now online. The sleeves on the petite 2-button were too short though.

Rachy, it has shoulder pads which might be why it looks slightly wider than normal in the shoulder. I actually like that though, my shoulders slope too much on their own and I like the sharper line and balancing effect of a padded shoulder. The shoulder seam is in the right place.

I'm with everyone on the jacket: it looks off, and I believe it's due to the length and the cut of the jacket. Is this style available in Petites? It can likely bring the waist up and take off length from the jacket.

I don't have much input on the fit - but I will say that I work at a medical school and I got the job by interviewing in a deliberately mismatched suit (as in, black pants with a marled grey jacket, grey pants with a black jacket etc.).Somehow this felt less stuffy than the full suit.

It seems a tad wide in the shoulders. I like the suit a lot in pic #13. If you're not going to wear it as a suit very often, I'd keep looking.

Diana, my husband has sometimes encountered this with the sale stuff and he just phones and they give him the discount on the phone instead. He has even managed to finagle discounts on undiscounted items! Like a trench, most recently. I don't have the chutzpah to do this myself but he tells me they are always really nice about it. Mind you, with the amount of stuff he orders from them, it's no wonder they want to keep his business, LOL.

I so emphathize on finding even one matching suit that fits both top & bottom, even with tailoring.
I'm not sold on this jacket for you. It looks overall "too much"--so a combination of length + boxy + sleeves a bit wide--even if take up the length.
Depends on how much you need it--as in urgent interviews-- and if you find your dream-fit blazer in some other style. It would not be my favorite look to use outside of interviews, as a cool jacket--but that's just my take.
I don't think it is just that you should only look at shorter blazers--I think you can rock a bit more streamlined look that is still somewhat fluid.

Tux is not ideal as an interview suit. Length in #16 is perfect, Diana. I am with you on why you prefer the more streamlined trouser fit here.

So this is the one to compare jacket fits with:

So would a tuxedo jacket be too out-there for a somewhat conservative suit?
Because I just saw this:
http://bananarepublic.gap.com/.....=686723002
I think it's a longer length but looks more fitted, to Rae's point above. I can't tell if it's the same fabric, but the composition is the same.

Also, I am seriously annoyed that apparently the BR discount codes work for women's blazers in store, but not online. Whaaaat? I do have a 40% code for next wednesday so I may see if I can track the 2 button down in a store nearby so I can get the discount.

Angie, thank you so much for chiming in! I'm glad you think it's workable. Actually, the shoes I'd likely wear most of the time are my dressy booties, which have a heel height in between the two I've shown here. Unfortunately they're still in a storage box right now and I didn't have time to dig them out, but I'm hoping I can split the difference and still be able to wear the slightly lower oxfords as well. I will probably hem the pants just a titch, but I'll definitely show you with the booties before I decide. (Just to be clear, the length right now is correct for 13-16, the taller heels, right?) One reason I prefer the slimmer pant to the wideleg is that I think they look fine with lower heels, hence increasing the comfort level.

I can't tell you how fun it is to see you in a suit, Diana. I just love you in the vibe. Very quintessential Calvin Klein.

I think it's a great fit. Well done. A smaller size on the jacket would definitely have been too small. To your point - you must shorten the sleeves if you keep this blazer. They do look sloppy at this length.

No need to ever button the jacket so not to worry about that fit challenge.

I'm not convinced you can wear both heel heights though. You might need to commit to a length. I am THAT particular about pant lengths though - and you know that.

I would love to see the shorter jacket with the higher stance too, Diana. So that we can compare fit and proportion.

You are off to a stellar suit start, sweet lady. xo

The fit looks better when buttoned, but then that enhances the low stance. With the good fit on the pants, it may be worth it to try the other blazer.

I don't think you need to give up on having a long blazer, but it might look better both long and tailored, so you don't lose your waist (which I think is why the jacket is reading as too big).

Diana, I, too, feel as if the fit of this jacket is off on you. You mentioned that the sleeves on the petite are too short. Is there seam allowance for letting them down? Because it might be worth trying the petite jacket in this size as well as the new 2 button version. You are short waisted and this is where petites sizing can really work the charm. I happen to think it might be tough for you to find a longer blazer that works -- but I also think that if you do find it, it will be killer on you because you have such long legs (relative to height). So since your dream is for a longer, boxier jacket, perhaps an attempt at this would be worth it? And then a back-up order of the 2 button one.

BTW I think I like the pants.

Hmm, I wonder if it might be worth it to order the new, two-button version, which is (I think) shorter and slimmer. (Although I am annoyed that apparently neither the 40% or 35% codes I have seem to work on full price blazers!). I wonder if I just need to get over my hankering for a longer blazer. Maybe there's a reason I have a whole closet full of shorter ones.

CF, that was my impression too, that academia doesn't really require a full suit for interviews. Heck, I know someone who got a position and I don't even think she owns a blazer. But some of the positions I might be interviewing for might be at medical schools. Although the research departments wouldn't care, I might have to meet with administration, and in medical schools I think a suit is required.

I want to love it, and do in theory but agree there is just something off that makes the jacket look more like you are playing dress up than a tailored suit. Is it alterable to fit like a dream? I have no idea - I'm the worst at seeing past off the rack to what a tailor might be able to do.

This is unhelpful. Re your second question - I'm a humanities academic at a research school. This is totally interview appropriate but more dressed up than you need - the blazer/pants would be fine, a suit isn't necessary. And that top is fine. I wouldn't go for anything dressier.

The suit I ordered from BR has arrived. This is the one-button lightweight wool jacket from last season that was on sale, and the Martin straight leg pants that Sveta just got too.

1-4: different angles of the suit, jacket unbuttoned. I am wearing my patent oxfords which have about a 1" heel. The other shoes I'd likely wear with this are my dressy booties, which are about 1.75". I think the pants length will be OK for both. the pants pucker slightly at the crotch, but Angie told me once that it would happen no matter what with stretch fabric. It's not very noticeable IRL, and in fact you might only be able to see it in photo 2, which is obviously extremely lightened to show detail.
5-6: same but with the jacket buttoned. What do we think of the stance? I feel like it's a bit low... but I'm not sure I'd ever need to button it, not even for an interview or something, so I'm not terribly worried.
7: pants alone.
8-9: blazer with my BF jeans outfit from today. I like it much better than the blue blazer I was wearing earlier.
10: blazer with my grey wideleg martins from last year. I don't like this combo, in fact now that I've tried the straight martins I kind of want to replace the widelegs altogether.
11: blazer with my knit pencil skirt. I don't have a businessy pencil at the moment, if I decide to keep this as a suit I will probably get the matching skirt too.
12: stock photo that shows the details better.

Some other points:
--I know the sleeves are slightly too long. I actually like them this length, however, in the interest of this being potentially used at job interviews, I will probably have them shortened (less than an inch) at some point. Don't want interviewers thinking my suit is sloppy. The sleeves on petite are too short.
--This season's version of this jacket is a two-button version that is shorter. The up side is that the stance is also higher. So that is an option if you think this jacket is too long or low.
--I am fairly certain that the sizing is correct for both pieces. The pants are the same size as the grey ones and fit the same at the top. I have tried the jacket one size down in the store and it was too tight.

--I like BR suiting because it is wool, not poly, and fully lined, hard to find at this price point. I might consider nice poly, but I absolutely won't buy unlined suit pants, so that is something to keep in mind if you think I should keep looking. Also, they always have this fabric every year, so I could add or replace pieces in the future.

So, keep or return? I am open to keeping either piece, or both. I wouldn't wear it as a suit very often, just for things like interviews. Therefore, I want it to be fairly conservative but not overly corporate. Relatedly, for those of you in my field (academia, life sciences, research oriented), would this be appropriate (with a dressier top of course!) for an assistant professor interview?

ETA: I took a few more photos in natural light and upped the exposure to show more detail. Hope these help. In the new photos (13-16) I am wearing my fluevogs which have a higher heel than the oxfords in the first batch of photos.
