Una - no worries!

To be completely honest, by the time I got home with the jacket yesterday and tried it on with my clothes, I felt completely confused. I no longer remembered what I was looking for in the first place.

Shannon somehow I missed this! The jacket was stunning and made me think "Chanel". Just encouraging g you in your decision. If its not a 10 then it's just to good enough for you. I have no doubt the perfect jacket will come all.

Good for you, Shannon. The jacket was lovely and it fit you, but, if I've learned anything from Angie, it is that it is better to be patient than to buy something just because it fits and"looks ok". Your jacket is still out there; keep your money in your wallet until you find it.

I don't know how I completely missed this post earlier Shannon. I can't believe you bought a leather Jacket, posted it, took it home and returned it and I missed the whole thing! This board moves very fast sometimes!

I would have been a nay. Mostly because of the neck. I also just feel like you are a little more cool than that jacket. Not that it had to be more edgy, but I almost think a piece like that where you are making such an investment and expect to be a workhorse should strongly personify one of the elements in your rubric and to me, that one looked too compromised.

I don't have a lot of investment pieces in my wardrobe but I do in other areas of my life and I think if I were going to invest in an item I would want a strong emotional reaction to it rather than something that just "works", even if by an observers eye it looked good on me. I feel if I didn't, then sure enough something would come along that I did feel giddy about and then I would be stuck with the just ok one, or else I'd buy the awesome one too and then the other would be unloved.

Don't mind you asking at all JulieJohn - a lot of it had to do with various comments here from other YLFers. I always take everything on board that is given and know that all comments are meant to be helpful. So when I got home and looked in the mirror I thought of the comments that were not as favourable to see if those were issues. I'm always clearer thinking when I'm out of the store (less pressure) and in my own bedroom. Plus I know that others see things I don't because we tend to look at items in a more personal and less analytical way (at least I do). I started to think about the neckline issue and tried the jacket on with a couple of dresses and tops that I envision wearing the jacket with and discovered the jacket just didn't do them justice.

I've already returned the jacket and literally tried on every single black leather jacket in the store. None of them were 10's for me and I'm actually happy I walked out with nothing. I had a fantastic SA who actually said NOT to buy anything if it wasn't perfect - that leather jackets are an investment and you need to know it's the one. I was blown away by her honesty. She also told me that the new fall line will be starting to come in by the 3rd week of August and that it looks good. So I'm going to wait...unless I see something fab in the meantime!

I admire your tantric delayed gratification so much. Perhaps something in a distressed WWII bomber is just waiting for you around the corner. What was the deciding NAY-factor, if you don't mind my asking? I make lots of snap decisions I later regret when it comes to clothes, so I'm trying to learn from all of you savants.

I've tried the jacket again at home with a few different outfits and have decided it is NOT the one. So back it goes and I'm going to step back from the leather jacket search for a little while so I can mull over what I'm really looking for.

The fit does look nice. I sort of have a thing about those types of collars on jackets, so it's not my cuppa, but if you love it and it's The One, then fabulous!

I know you feel like you need to spend your money, but if this one isn't quite perfect, won't there be other jackets coming down the pike as we head into fall? I mean, you could afford to be a teeny bit patient, if this one is not The One, since it's such a significant purchase?

Shannon, I think the fit is great but to my eye this is not a 10. I'm not crazy about the neckline, as I almost always prefer leather jackets to have a collar, or a neckline that can be folded down like a collar like on the brown one in your first post. This type of collarless, crew-neck style jacket always reads as a little too sporty to me. The other thing I am not loving here is the big flap pockets.

Right, this one (except for the ruffle) is more of the collar-less variety, which I don't find hard to style at all. Maybe you can play around with it tonight with your winter tops. That should be nice and sweaty!

I feel I should clarify something about the neckline on this jacket. It is not the same sort of neckline as Laura (rhubarbgirl) is posting a K/R thread about. Laura's neckline is a stand up collar (Neru or Mandarin collar if you will) whereas my jacket has absolutely no collar except for a 1/4 inch leather ruffle. I do agree that a Neru collar is neck shortening for someone of my height but with this jacket, my entire neck is exposed. I do agree that a full blown v-neck is definitely more elongating for me however.

Una - I know you're just looking out for me honey! But what if there are no other ones to compare it with? I'm actually being serious - none of the other ones fit in the rest of my body and Danier Leather is the only brick & mortar high quality leather store we have here. I'm not trying to be defensive, I'm just explaining that I may not have other options available to me. I tried on about 12 leather jackets and this is the only one that fit my waist, zipped up, fit my shoulders and wasn't over my hips/butt. As far as I know, there are no retailers in Winnipeg that sell petite sized leather jackets so I may have to go with what I can get, you know?

Shannon, I actually don't think this neckline is a problem on you at all. I personally find it a hard one to style, though. I'm slowly wavering toward keep - but I would have liked to see more options on you to compare.

Ok let's see, it's a real jacket from a real B&M store and you have it in your possession (not an obscure picture of one on the web from a store in the US) so that's a huge plus!

It's a good color and cut on you. It has interesting details. It flatters you. It fits (besides the sleeves--that's a non-issue). I think the neckline is just fine on you. I've never thought your neck looked short. You can wear a turtleneck or shirt collar under it, and it will be very scarf-friendly in the winter. It will look good with skirts and trousers, IMO. It is kind of classic/retro and yet the details make it look modern. As for edgy or urban I don't know much about that, but you should get *some* points for wearing black leather, which was considered very, very dangerous not too long ago. :)

Keep!

I think I'll take it home and play with it a bit and see how it works with my wardrobe.

Ceit - financially, there can only be one leather jacket so I either need to be sure of this one or return it and keep looking. No option to get this one and another one later (I wish!).

Una - I hear you about the neckline issue.

Sunita - I want to be able to wear the jacket primarily open like in pic #1 rather than zipped. I only zipped it to show how the fit is.

Is it possible the neckline is also reading worse than it is because of the blouse I've popped the jacket over here? I would not be wearing the jacket with this blouse.

As I said - will take it home and play with it.

Una makes a good point about a V neck elongating us shorties!

Shannon: does the jacket look more flattering if you leave it partially unzipped (kind of like the one in my link above)?

I sometimes think I am much edgier than I am, too. And I agree - I couldn't see you in, say, Una and Mo's cut-off biker jacket. Still, there is a middle ground and I can't help but see a very ladylike Chanel variation here. Not that that's bad if it's what you want.

Una does make a good point about the neckline - I find them maddening to style, myself. Maybe bring the jacket home and play in the closet?

I like it! I agree is isn't edgy, but it is a classic/romantic version of a leather jacket if that makes any sense, that I can see working with your style. I say keep it, and then keep your eye open in future for the edgy version if you still feel there is a wardrobe hole.

I am with Rae - this is very nice on you, but I'm not entirely sold. I think it's because I have an aversion to scuba style leather jackets of which this is a variation. I prefer a v-neck for us shorties with shorter necklines.

I think the color black meets the urban requirement.

Very true Rae but you know, the edgy ones I tried on just didn't seem like me (nor fit properly for that matter). I can add edge to my outfits with my footwear. The purpose I envisioned for a black leather jacket was to take place of a blazer - wear over dresses, blouses with trousers or skirts, over tees with jeans. I don't think I'm as "edgy" as I sometimes want to be and my deep love for retro/vintage trumps edgy. Does that make sense?
