I'm feeling comfortable with the decision. I was thinking that one of my fashion ideals is to be breezy in the summer and cozy in the winter, and this dress is neither. It's just not me.

Suz, you couldn't be more right about the small design details. It's a learning experience!

I think it was the right choice but nonetheless I am sad for you since it seemed like a good idea to try to replicate. I hope "the real thing" (or something even better) shows up. I guess one silver lining is that we have clearly identified a few small design details that seemed to make a big difference. You already knew -- hi-low, V neck, fabrication. Now you know even more about the cut.

You know, if I had just seen the eshakti dress on its own I would have said it looks good although I'm not wild about how that shawl collar sits. But next to the kohl's dress it looks lackluster. So I think you've made the right choice to send it back.

Thanks for all the input, everyone. I think I'm going to send it back. The length feels frumpy on me. I think it could probably be rescued with a heel and/or some tailoring, but the truth is: I don't need to make this work. It's a plain, black dress that's almost right. Those are a dime a dozen. I'll hold out for the next one that's exactly right.

Suz, I set up an eBay alert for the Kohl's one, just in case it should show up. Good idea!

It's so perfect for you in every way.

OR...here's a thought, will eshakti (or a sewist in your town) make a copy of the black one? I feel like it should be pretty easy to do, truthfully.

I have mixed feelings about this. I like the top half but I think the hemline needs more drama. I do love the neckline and you can see that the fabric is substantial. But in pics 1 and 2 it looks like a straight hem maxi dress that ends on your lower mid calf. I find that length (without a high low effect or wrap effect or something to break it up) can be unflattering. I would at least try taking it to a tailor to see if it is possible to make the high low effect more pronounced and noticeable.

Hi Jenn --

Since you asked, and since the Kohl's dress sets a very high bar, I would probably return the new one.

The two seem like such similar designs but I think your current one has more elegance and flattery. If you look at the stock photo the design is adding a lot of width to the model's waist and torso, whereas your old dress just flows nicely.

If you do end up keeping the new one, I'd hem the front up to mimic your current dress' length. That one looks like a perfect high/low combo (sorry! hold on, old dress, hold on).

Suz is right. The E-Shakti dress reads less "casual/boho" and more "classic". It is flattering on you, but it just doesn't look as "care free" as your Kohl's dress (if that is the look you are after). In my opinion, shawl collars are not a good match with long necklaces. (I am a long necklace wearer and tend to avoid anything with that type of collar.) But you could go with a shorter pendant necklace (as you have done here) or a short statement necklace that fills in the neckline.

I think it looks great on you, but it is a slightly different style. Less boho for sure. It's not a direct replacement, but it's still lovely on you. I love the neckline, sleeves and cute lapels. The imperceptible hi-low hem doesn't bother me.

Momo, I just got that bag last week! I've had my eye out for a straw bag all summer, and found that one at H&M for $15. Couldn't be happier with it!

Suz, good eye. I tried to wear that same boho-ish tassel necklace with the new dress and couldn't get it to sit right on the collar. I hadn't noticed that about the waistband, but I think you're right. It's on an angle like the hemline. Hmm. Maybe I can take it to my alterations lady and ask about changing the hem, but it irks me to have to do that on a piece that I already paid for custom sizing on.

I think the high-low hem of your Kohl's dress really adds something visually on you that the eShakti dress lacks. However, it still seems like a nice dress. I can see where the neckline would be fussy - are you okay with having to add a stitch?

So interesting. The devil is in the details, as they say.

I like this new dress on you as well, but somehow it looks less boho and more classic/ traditional. I wonder if you could do a hemline adjustment to make it a truer hi-low hem; that might help.

I wouldn't say it is less flattering (from what I can tell) but it does seem more fussy, somehow. That shawl collar neckline is part of the issue, I think.

The band on your beloved dress looks like it sort of does a small inverted V near the bust -- this helps the draping fall where you want it maybe and also probably holds everything in place nicely. The band on the eshakti seems to sit a bit lower and straighter.

But I may be completely wrong about that.

Can you wear the eshakti around and see how you feel in it? (At home of course.) I think in the end it may come down to comfort....you look great in this general style but since it is a beloved workhorse it is really hard to replace.

The eShakti dress I ordered as a close proximation of my cheap Kohl's summer workhorse arrived. I'm not 100% on it, so I'd like your input. Please ignore my wet hair and scuffed toenails.

#1 is the new dress. #2 is the same dress overexposed to show detail. #3 is a side view showing the hemline and the reason I identify as a pear even though I sometimes look hourglass-y from the front. :)

#4 is the older dress that's starting to show wear. I plan to keep wearing it as long as possible.

Pros: The eShakti dress is made of a thicker, sturdier jersey knit than the Kohl's. It's a faux wrap, but the skirt slit goes all the way to the waistline. Plenty of coverage, but it makes for some nice movement while walking. Also, it has pockets.

Cons: The high-low hem is barely there, certainly not anywhere near as dramatic as the Find shows. I don't find the waistline quite as flattering as the ruched waistband on the other dress. Also, the neckline is sort of fussy. At the very least, I would have to put a stitch in to hold it in place if I decide to keep. Overall, I think the cut is less flattering than the Kohl's dress, even though the thicker fabric is more forgiving. It seems like it makes me look more bottom-heavy?
