Skirts with a back zip are MUCH easier/less expensive to alter. Sometimes side zip ones are impossible to do without making the skirt off-kilter, regardless of pleats.

Could you just exchange it for a smaller size? Seems like a lot of work/money to have it altered. You could always take it to a tailor and get an estimate though.

ETA: sorry, just read that you bought the smallest size. There are similar skirts out there, so maybe just shop around and find a different one!

Nicole, if the skirt situation is really quite desperate for you, what you could try is adding a *new* seam just opposite the elastic. Basically a case of simply folding in the fabric from waistband to hem and sewing up. It won't be a very noticeable seam thanks to the pleats.

Yikes. Ruched elastic in the middle sounds like doom. It would have to be taken in on both sides to keep that centered, and with a zipper on one side and it being lining, that's an expensive alteration. I'd take it in for an estimate, but I'm guessing that you are talking at least $30.

I am not a card holder. That sounds dangerous (for me).

I'll go look at the waist right now and see if i can get a picture!

ETA: Ok it was pretty hard for me to get a decent picture. There's a side zipper that is attached to the skirt + lining on one seam so i would *think* it'd be best to take it in from the other side seam. But then i noticed there is some ruched elastic in the middle of the waistband so that would make that off centered right? My head is spinning. Maybe i should just return it. @_@

Not sure if you're near a Nordstrom, but they do complimentary alterations if you're a card holder.

What does the existing seam look like? Typically, anything with pleats is an expensive alteration. However, it may be that the seam placement allows them to put a new seam in a few inches closer in--if the pleats line up the right way. Would the skirt be lopsided if you took a few pleats off on only one side? Or is it pretty much the same thing all the way around, which might allow you to do a simple alteration on just one side to take it in?

Before i went on SYC i ordered this skirt in the ivory color in the smallest size. Received it today and the waist is 1 1/2 - 2" too big for me. I'm wondering because of the pleats would this be a difficult alteration? I don't want it to cost me too much. Is it worth it or should i return and keep my eye out for a similar skirt?

My main issue is it seems like a lot of times skirts like this that are in my price range are too short. Unless i'm just not looking in the right places.
