Thanks Eva. I don't have any pics of them, but I could go back on Saturday maybe and take some if I take them into the dressing room. They do have a bit more of a defined waist, but not much. I definitely want to wear the jacket afterwards too, when I'm outside for a longer time in bad weather. It's not going to be an everyday jacket though, I prefer to use an umbrella in the city. I would be alright paying the 170€, but I didn't want to go over 200€. So the navy is out.

Thanks Kelly! I probably wouldn't shorten the sleeves on the Marmot jacket though, they don't offer it as far as I know and I wouldn't want to go just anywhere for alterations. I'd just have to deal with it.

7/8 looks very sleek too. I like the neckline on that one better than on the JW but it's hard to tell without seeing them on. If you factor in the sleeve alteration perhaps the cost difference between the marmot and 7/8 even out?

Do you have pics of you in the 2 navy options? From the stock photos, they both look like they'd fit well: do they have more of a waist than your first option? Will you be wearing the jacket enough in your regular life to justify spending a little more to get a bit more flattery? The black is certainly flattering enough, imho, if not perfect.

Thanks Denise - it could be even longer, might be nice for sitting down etc. But there don't seem to be many longer jackets around and when they are longer they are cut too straight.

Thanks Marin! That's why I wanted to go with gear and not get a rain jacket by a 'fashion' brand. I don't want to get wet and I don't trust the other jackets to keep me dry in really bad weather. And yes, there is velcro along the zip (and at the back of the hood).

Thanks Alasse! I'm going to give B&M shopping another try today after work, maybe I'll find something that fits even better.

I have a very similar black marmot rain jacket I wear quite a bit. Maybe just an older version. I wear it a lot, especially in non-gear but need gear quality rain jacket situations. My non-gear rain jacket has an inferior hood and leaks after a few hours of driving rain. Looks better but is not dependable for the long haul. My gear jacket it short at the waist to accommodate a climbing harness and an obnoxiously non-urban color.

Any woo, I think you will really like the jacket, the coverage in the back is nice to keep you dry and the hoods on Marmots are usually really good. I can't speak of the sleeve length, it looks good with the cuffs tightened. I have always been very pleased with my Marmot purchases. I can't see from the pictures but if there is a velcro strip along the zipper or at the hood be aware that it can ruin knits and finer fabrics.

I have fun hiking!

Thanks Kelly. :-)

Thanks Zibbets! Thing is that I'd really need petite sizing, so all sleeves are too long. Gear always has too long sleeves. I think I might try some more stores until I have to decide whether to send it back or not, but I'm not sure I will be successful. I've been looking for a while.

It looks like a great basic jacket to me. It is streamlined/sleek and the hood fit is great. I'd be tempted to keep if you can layer underneath it sufficiently. It is a very flattering style.

Thanks Rabbit! Great analysis and very helpful comments. I agree about Marmot and my brother has the same jacket in the men's version and he likes it so far. And I would definitely layer up! I thought of going with a short or longsleeved tee under a fleece and the jacket for the trip, but I haven't really planned what I want to pack yet. I hadn't thought of taking gloves and a beanie, but maybe I should.

The cap does have a visor, you just can't really see it in the pic. It's really a good construction, covering all the hair without constricting the field of vision.

I've tried rolling the sleeves and folding them twice actually works fairly well due to the inflexible velcro strap that gives the roll some stability. Not ideal, but I think I would prefer rolling them like that to wearing them tight in warm weather. Anyone know if shortening the sleeves of a jacket like that is doable, btw?

The zip pocket on the front might be nice for small tickets, but it isn't very big. My identity card doesn't fit, I still have one of the old German ones that were fairly big.

And yes, it is quite lightweight and could be put into a backpack without a problem. Not sure how much it wrinkles, but at first glance it seems to be a nice fabric, not as plastic-y as many other rain jackets.

Here are the things I like about it:

-the color and cut are VERY neutral, especially for the UK, you definitely won't stand out.

-as gear it has a lot to recommend it. Marmot is a good brand, those kind of hoods are quite useful in driving rain (it covers all your hair, bonus!). Does the cap have a visor? Long sleeves with velcro closures are great for saying warm, closing the gap with gloves, and preventing water from going down your sleeve. Looks long enough in the back to help water sheet off too. (Can you tell I've hiked a lot in Scotland in the rain? ). You might want to try rolling the sleeves and see if that is comfortable for walking around in non rainy weather.

-long front zip pocket on the chest is great for passports and train-tickets if you want something easy access rather than digging in or getting separated from a backpack.

-If you can get a fleece under it, especially with a thermal tee under that, you should be warm enough with gloves and a beanie. Layering is important because if you are walking you can get warm even if it's cold outside. For example down puffers weren't great in my experience in the UK because they were useless wet, and really only were needed when you were sitting still on a mountain top or something. Otherwise they were too warm.

-You can always add color with a scarf if you want to.

-is it light and does it fold up in a small package without being super wrinkly when you put it on again? If so -- that's what you want.

ETA: my rain jacket which is a similar shape is a little tight around the hips. It doesn't bother me though because it basically keeps water or drafts from going up under the bottom edge of the jacket. Scotland - the land where rain can be horizontal - it sucks.

Thanks! It's not too tight, but a bit more room wouldn't be amiss, if that makes sense. That is with the fleece under it btw, it's not an issue wearing just a tee. The thing is that for the hips to really have room I would have needed to go up to a size L in more or less all the jackets I've tried so far and I'm drowning in a size L on top! Plus the sleeves are even longer then.

It's hard to see the details because of the color, but it isn't bad. The style suits you but the devil is in the details as they say. The sleeves would not be a deal breaker for me but the tightness around the hips would definitely bug me. My gear outerwear has to be comfortable! (I can't see tightness myself, BTW, but I will take your word for it).

The rain jackets came and sadly the grey one didn't fit (I don't think another size would help either). The black isn't bad though, it's definitely the best one I've tried so far, even though there are still some fit issues.

#1-4
The length is alright and closing the zipper wasn't a problem, although there could be a bit more room around the hips. The hood is really great, adjustable so it really fits.

#5
Wore my loungewear fleece under it in the pictures to test the layering. I would probably buy a new layering fleece jacket for the trip. I'm a bit hesitant if it would be warm enough in really bad weather, the jacket really is only a thin rain jacket. Of course on the positive side it would be alright to wear with just a tee under it too in case it's warm.

#6
Tightening the sleeves to adjust the length. The sleeve length is definitely bothering me because I'm so used to shorter sleeves now. To go about my day I would have to tighten them and I don't really like that.

So, what do you think? I'm thinking about trying another store tomorrow - that brand is supposed to be cut for the more womanly figure and they do alterations too. Might end up being more expensive though. I do have some days to decide whether to return this one, although I could always order the jacket again if I find nothing else in the next few weeks. It's from this year and was full price.

ETA

I was in two more stores today and tried some more jackets on. I found two other options, but I don't have any pictures. I tried the jackets directly in the store and I didn't want to take pictures with people looking.

The first one (#7/8) is Schöffel. It's a Gore-Tex jacket. It's longer so definitely covers all of my behind and there's enough room for the hips even with a warm fleece under it. The sleeves are shorter than on the Marmot jacket too. The hood is also nice. They had the navy in the store and it was a nice neutral navy (darker than in pic #7). But it was 250€ and that's definitely too much. I've had a look online and I could order it in black for 170€. The Marmot jacket is 130€, for comparison (it's not Gore-Tex but one of their own fabrics). The Schöffel was definitely slightly roomy in the size 38, but the 36 was too small. The fabric was soft, it felt quite nice.

The second one (#9/10) was Jack Wolfskin. I've had a JW jacket as a teen and really liked it, but I'm a bit sceptical about them now. To me it seems that in the last ten years they've changed quite a bit, now targeting mostly people in the 'urban jungle'. This one was originally 170€ (overpriced IMO), but I found the jacket in navy for 125€ online. It has kind of an a line shape, so enough room for the hips without being much too big on top. Also longer than the Marmot jacket. The sleeves were shorter than on the Marmot jacket, but longer than on the Schöffel jacket. It's not Gore-Tex but a JW fabric, Texapore. The hood was fairly nice and adjustable and the fabric was lovely too, it had a bit of a cotton feel. The fit was slightly roomy, similar to the Schöffel jacket. This one was nice, but I'm just not sure if it would be as effective as the other two (although that may be prejudice on my part).

Both of the jackets felt fine with a fleece jacket and maybe just a tad too roomy wearing only a t-shirt. But the Marmot was best with at least a sweater too.

So that's it. Any thoughts?
