Angie, will try a size up. With this kind of shirt does it just not matter how they fit in the waist?

The fit looks slouchy and cool but if it feels like it's pulling in the shoulders, I would return it. It seems like I see chambray/denim shirts every where lately. I would hold out for one that is more comfortable.

I size one size up in j.crew button downs - I'm wearing one right now! I can wear a size M or a 10, but almost always go for L or 12 - I prefer the look. I've got a perfect shirt, a boy shirt, and a popover in 12, and a stretch perfect in a L.

I definitely wear a 10 or even an 8 in most of their tops, though.

It does feel a bit tight in the back and arms. I rarely wear woven shirts though, they always feel weird on me.

Tex - I've sort of forgotten about BR, though I used to love them. Darker would be good!

Suz - I think of AT as cutting narrow through the waist and high hip compared to everywhere else. I'm surprised you aren't sized out of it though!

This one looks okay but it's not very fitted in appearance, which to me is not the usual for jcrew shirts as I get them all the time *because* they are fitted and usually longish. I have not tried their chambray shirt though. And it depends on how it feels and what you want in terms of fit.

I really like the one I got at Banana Republic (darker color though) and I also like one I got at Lands End Canvas last year (a little darker than yours and more "casual" in style). Both were size Med I think and I usually wear a Med-8 or so.

The shirt doesn't look too small, but I'm wondering if it is tighter on your slender arms than you prefer. FWIW, I have had trouble finding a chambray shirt with a cut and pocket placement that I like. I found one that reasonably fit at J Jill, but I still need to increase the back and front darts because it is a bit too loose in the waist and hip areas, and I bought the smallest size so I couldn't size down.

Your expectations are not unreasonable. If AT consistently fits you, I would stalk the online site and visit the various b&m stores whenever I could.

This seems a pretty good fit to me.

I hate trying on clothes. I don't know about other people, but I take three sizes with me into the dressing rooms.

Hmm. I don't know if that cut is right for you. It looks sort of loose in the front, yet intended to be somewhat tailored. How does it feel when you do that arm thing? Would you wear it tucked or untucked?

I, too, have good luck with AT. I wonder what it is. I hardly EVER get to shop there (because they still aren't in Canada and don't ship here) but the few articles I have from there are easy fits for me.

I'm an 8P in j crew shirts so don't feel bad - their sizing is their own world. I think this looks great but I can't stand feeling anything tight in the shoulders - is that an issue with this one?

J Crew and buttonfront shirts!

I looked for a chambray/denim shirt last year and didn't find one I thought looked good. Maybe I have unreasonable expectations? Does this fit OK? I had to order it because our local J Crew does not stock anything above a 6.

And while I'm at it - this shirt is an 8 and seems too small. The other shirt I ordered was too tight in the shoulders and back in a S, and weirdly tent-like in a M. And the skirt I ordered in a 2 is too big! I am not that disproportionate! This reminds me why my trips to the mall usually end in a retreat to the safety of Ann Taylor, where everything fits.
