I really like that first blue lace dress on you, except for the length. Have you considered trying it in a regular, possibly one size down? I'm petite, too, and have had luck doing that with dresses that run short. Have fun on your cruise!

Try that all saints in oyster please! Also, metalicus does some lovely drapey dresses. Talk to deb about that. And Lisa suggested a brand to Suz that had some great dresses.

Whoops: I missed something there...glad you found your dress!

For $19, you have a winner. I was wondering how the first dress might look with hose and shoes, and I'm glad your mother agreed about the lovely colour.

I feel the same as you about fit and flare dresses. I just don't think they flatter me. I'm not sure why. Theoretically, they "should" in the sense that we are both hourglass-ish (albeit with different proportions). Is it short-waistedness that makes the problem? Is it that they feel on the "young" side? I don't know. I did wear them as a much younger woman and liked the way they looked on me then, and my weight was more or less the same at the time.

I really like the idea of the All Saints Nise dress if the colour works. It's a nice combination of sophisticated and very feminine that you don't often see -- or at least I don't often see. Except on Sharon's recent WIWs, maybe.

Sounds like you are sorted. The best advice is to always defer to mom :). For $19 that's a steal, and for a Hawaiian cruise it will be perfect.

For sure try the Allsaints dress. I love the one I picked up in the summer (see find). There was a similar sleeved version as well. Make sure to try the sizes up. It makes a huge difference in fit and overall look.

I only like the second one. The first is too short (regardless of your great legs) and the third too fussy, girlish and prom shaped. Don't know why I am feeling so adamant - will not be offended if ignored!

I like #2 and the shape, not so much the print, of #3. Of the Nordies options, I like the Taylor Scuba Sheath and the AP long sleeved lace sheath (both colors).

Well, go Mom! For $19 you can darn well keep what she likes. :)

Love the AS dress. It also comes in burgundy. It ran quite small in my opinion (I tried it in Vegas) but you are the right build for it!

Thanks everyone! Now after soliciting your advice it might look like I am completely ignoring it. Because I am keeping the turquoise dress and returning the other two. Mom advised me to try on all three dresses in front of her with stockings and pumps (not bare legs and sandals), in daylight. She had only seen the pictures on my laptop before. Her favorites on me, were the first turquoise dress and the last green dress. She felt the pictures did not do the first dress justice in particular. We did a sit and bend test and the first dress just barely passed but I think on a cruise to Hawaii it's fine. With pantyhose on the lumps get smoothed so the dress no longer looks clingy.

The second dress photographed better than it really looked we decided. The other two dresses unwrinkled after unpacking and hanging a few days while the navy dress stayed really wrinkled, we thought this was a problem given this dress would be traveling with me. Mom also thought the second dress was too similar to my Zara, and that other cruise guests would think I wore the same dress twice in a row. (!)

The turquoise dress was just $19 so if I only wear it once, it's ok. Meanwhile, a sleeved dress with an open neckline that is not black, goes on my HEWI list. When I am in SF in a few weeks I'll stop by an AS store and try on the Nise dress. Thanks for the recommendation Una, and if any of you find my HEWI dress, let me know!

ETA -- the green dress got returned because I didn't feel fab in it, I felt frumpy.

ETA note to Parsley -- yes -- I think I will look for AP dresses in regular sizes, that's good advice.

I really like the turquoise color on you and seems like it would be good for a cruise (I am assuming a warm destination cruise). The dress seems like it's too clingy, though, even though it fits.

If you don't find another turquoise I too would like to see the light colored allsaints.

Your OP here: it struck me that you are between sizes in this brand. Or, #1 is really supposed to be that short and you belong in a 4 not a 6. #2 looks too big though I do like the length. #3 ... it looks like a drop waist dress? But is it supposed to be?

I adore the turquoise color on you.

I like the gray lace color the most, though.
Dress shopping is a bear for me so you have my sympathy but I think you will have more luck with your shape in finding something great--keep looking! I do like the simple sheath styles for you. A little longer than the blue looks more elegant to my eye but still above the knee for you.

I can imagine that All Saints Nise dress looking great on you! It's a lot more edgy and sophisticated than your other choices.
Do you think that the proportions of the regular (non-petite) size in the Adrianna Papell dress would be too "off" on you in a sheath style? Because if not, I think the length would be a lot better.
I think the Prussian blue or the black/nude would look pretty on you in this one:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/ad.....550?origin

FWIW, I like the illusion yoked dresses the best for you. Some of the Nordstom dresses, while nice, look more work appropriate than cruise appropriate, not that I've ever been on a cruise. The first group of dresses you posted seemed very *safe* and not at all edgy or current or what I think of as Cocolion/Denise style. I realize that you are looking for something your mom (vs. BF) would approve of, but I would think if you avoid very short, very body con, and otherwise showing a lot of skin, that base will be covered.

Hmmm. How about a dress with a fluid or oversize fit? Not that I've really seen much of anything. . .

Okay, I see that the original three and now out of consideration. I do think the colour of the first one is very lovely on you.

Of the ones you're showing here, I think a lot of them are worth trying. Several have rather high necklines -- is that okay for you, do you think?

Definitely try the AP lace long sleeved one -- it looks cruise-worthy with mom. I also think the Pisarro Nights one is quite lovely. But really, it is all going to come down to fit and colour. For spring, you might want to be "light" rather than dark, particularly since your other dress is dark.

I'm going to check out Nordstorm now. Thanks for your help, I am so out of practice when it comes to dress shopping.

ETA -- Una I'll check out AllSaints too. I'm not sure how trendy I want to go since I so seldom wear dresses and this is more for Mom than for me, but it's worth looking.

Thanks everyone! At first I disliked #1 then it began to grow on me. Mom doesn't like it, she says it's too short so since I'm dressing for Mom, I'm not going to keep it.

I like the color on #3 but not the shape. It looks frumpy on me I think. I've never tried a fit and flare and don't think I have the long, slim waistline to pull this off well.

#2 is navy not black. It has a cowl neckline and ruching around the mid-section. It is loose and the armholes are slightly large. I didn't iron it or style my hair, make-up or footwear but do think this simple sheath style is most "me." My concern with this dress is that it is similar to the Zara black sheath I have (my one dress) and if I want a second dress maybe I should pick something quite different.

Good advice Angie to look for sleeves.

I also prefer #2 out of these, but I see it as a pretty "safe" choice and wonder if you might keep looking for something more special? If it were me, I'd likely go "safe" because I so rarely wear a dress and when I do, I want to feel as comfortable as possible so I tend to keep it basic.

Have you looked at Allsaints? They have some edgy similar dresses in non-black. I am having a weird issue with black that probably needs its own post so have been looking for non-black options.
