Thank you Helen 11. Let's see if they'll stay this way :)

That's reassuring, Word Lily. I'm hoping the transition won't be disappointing. I'm sure if I include chocolate some days, it'll work ;)

Empty box on the shelf! Vertical storage of the blankets in the pink box! I hope it stays that way for a while!

I gave my daughter a large bucket of little itty-bitty items that I wanted her to go through. I also gave her two small containers and explained that one was to put things that she wanted to keep and the other for items she could part with. Without any help from me, she purged half of the things. Maybe it was the containers' size?

My son is 3, and we've done a more activity/experience based Advent calendar the past 2 years. Of course, he's never known anything different, but he's always excited about opening each day's, and anticipates the event. We'll do a piece of candy in a day or two, but that's it. The rest is all things to do together.

Your Kondo'd drawers and shelves look excellent!
Good luck with the ongoing process. I like your plan for back to school clothes. Kids clothes are a trap for me- we are given plenty of hand-me-downs, and new cute things are so cheap. One day I will be ruthless and they will have a capsule wardrobe!

Here's what mom lost from her closet ... and some kondo-ing ...

Still working on my DD's toys and stuff but we're making head way!

Thanks for the vote of confidence Sara L. We have fun food and movie night on Fridays and she looks forward to it (so do I!) so maybe it would work for the advent calendar.

Thanks, Mona. I'll report back!

I just finished this book and can't wait to launch on a big declutter phase in fall. Good luck decluttering toys for DD. Let us know how it goes.

Good luck! I've found that my kids love doing planned activities. They especially like when they're planned out (as they would be on an advent calendar) so they can anticipate them. They are always surprisingly excited for an upcoming Game Night or Movie Night.

Yes Helen11, we're doing it together (she's 5). This is part of the reason it's taking a long time (today is day 2)! But I really want to go through the process with her and have her and I learn together. I'm not a total pack rat but things like paper tend to pile up. I want her to learn to be discerning about what she keeps around her.

I'm also thinking about how to handle the holiday season. She has a birthday, an advent calendar and Christmas. I want to give her a memorable experience but limit the amount of STUFF. I've read online about parents filling advent calendars with experiences rather than stuff (visiting Santa, drinking hot chocolate and watching a favourite Holiday movie etc.) I wonder if she'll appreciate that at her age? But I also don't want to fill it with dollar store junk!

I've also decided this year there's no back-to-school wardrobe replenishment extravaganza. She's starting grade one, so a significant milestone. We'll shop for one special 1st-day-of-school outfit and then she'll be SHC (shopping her closet) for the rest of the season. She has more than enough!

Oh wow. Could your DD help with it? I'm trying to get mine involved in looking after their own things. They are reluctant to let things go, but I don't want to just clear things out behind their backs.

Just about to KonMari my DD's toys and art supplies. We do a purge of stuff every fall (her birthday's in December too - clear the way). We're getting a jump on it this year the Marie Kondo way.

I know a lot of you on the forum have KonMari'ed your closets. I do a pretty regular cull of wardrobe items (usually seasonally). But I have a feeling after this exercise, I'll get really ruthless with my closet. Why are shoes and outwear so hard to get rid of??
