I love Revelry, but I use it for patterns and reference (I am only a beginning knitter). My mother used to always say (and live by) "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all." It was great advice. I love YLF because we support each other. I feel like we're all friends, even though most of us have never met.

next year will be the 10th anniversary of Ravelry. I can't believe it's been that long,
I am not on the forums as much now, but they have great forums on just about any topic one might want

Diana, I agree about the size difference. I don't respond as much there but use it for patterns and reference.

A YLF group there could be fun - I would join. We could use it to discuss knitting projects related to style. Could be slow going though, it takes me a while to complete a project. :)

Knitters are very nice. I'm in a spinning and weaving guild and the members are so generous with their time and knowledge. Very much like YLF.

I'm on Ravelry too. Like the article mentions I love the support that is given to all of the knitters and crocheters that post their projects. The members embody the motto, "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."

I love ravelry too! I have been a member for 9 years! I joined shortly after they opened, back when there was a 1-2 month waiting list for invitations, and have used the site consistently ever since. I definitely see some similarities although I think ravelry's scope is much larger (millions of users and pages, full database functionality, and pattern sales) so it does not feel quite as intimate and friendly as ylf to me.
Actually at some point I thought about starting a ylf ravelry group but didn't think there would be enough interest....

ETA: the article's point about ravelry having great user retention is true, although I stay/participate for different reasons than I do on Ylf. For me ravelry fulfills some really knitting-specific important functions - the pattern database and my personal project notebook/record are the main ones - whereas I am on ylf because I honestly love you all. (I love talking about fashion too but if the people weren't nice I would just read the blog and stay away from the forum).
Both rav and ylf are also really well-designed and user-friendly sites, which is a huge part in getting people to come back. I think I've mentioned this before but Casey, the webmaster behind ravelry, basically built it from the ground up by himself, and I honestly think it's one of the best designed sites on the internet.

I love Ravelry! I am a knitter and always have a few projects going and a lot of that is because of the inspiration from Ravelry. It does have some similarities to YLF for sure. Great article! (And so true about parent-shaming, why do people do that?)

I have looked at Ravelry once or twice, when I am in a crocheting phase. I'm supposed to be working on a log cabin afghan now, but I need something good on tv to go with it.

In any case this article about the niceness of the Ravelry community reminds me of the niceness of YLF, and why I keep coming back.
