Here is my list (as a curvy, average sized person)

Knit pros:

• Stretchy enough to fit over the bust and still fit in the shoulder and everywhere else
• Comfortable and soft
• Low maintenance: don't usually require ironing or dry cleaning
• Especially good for layering
• Can be "reworked": meaning that I can push and shove them around a bit if I want them to appear more ruched or a little longer or shorter.
• Usually cheaper
• Knits drape in a way that wovens can't

Knit cons:

• Short-lived. Knits get shapeless and faded quickly.
• Can't be altered. If a knit is too long for me, even after scrunching a bit, too bad. There is nothing I can do.
• Clinginess. Knits can cling around areas that I don't necssarily want them to, and also show bra lines and other unflattering bits more clearly than wovens.
• Lack of structure.

Woven pros:

• They last a lot longer than knits
• More structure. They hide lumps and bumps well.
• They can be altered
• No clinging
• Crisper-looking and more polished than a knit

Woven cons:

• High maintenance, because they
• ...wrinkle easily
• Often dry clean only, or dry clean preferred
• Rigid and not as comfy as knits
• More expensive
• If there is no stretch content or very little, they do not fit curvy girls well. They will always need to be altered.

Knits are my preference. I would LOVE to wear more wovens, but they are just not practical for me. I'm too curvy and I'm not in a place in my life where tailoring, dry cleaning and pressing, and spending loads of money on investment tops make sense. I prefer the look of wovens and envy women who can wear them, but they are not for me. Angie prefers wovens, and understandably so, because they suit her lifestyle and with her body they are pretty easy to fit.

As a not-so-skinny hourglass myself, I wear both - but when I wear wovens, I definitely look for some stretch in the fabric (see Angie's post that Eva mentioned.) If I'm wearing a button-down woven top, I also look for a curvier cut (curved rather than straight vertical seams) and buttons that are spaced closely together, although sometimes I still add my own hidden snaps in between button-holes to prevent gapes. I love that knits are easier to conform to my shape, but wovens give me more structure if they are cut well.

I wasn't clear on the differnce either until Angie gave a great description of both. http://youlookfab.com/2008/03/.....us-wovens/

Hmm, those are completely different types of materials. Knits are soft and stretchy, it is what t-shirts and sweaters are made off. Wovens are usually rigid ( although they can have some stretch added), they are much more structured, it is what button-down shirts are made of. Pretty much any body type can wear both if one chooses the right shapes and layers appropriately.

I actually don't know what the difference is, sorry but I'm new around here and I've always wondered. Is either one to be avoided if I'm a not so skinny hourglass?
