I like the idea of subway tile with a dark green grout! I saw this recently with black and black countertops... it was just gorgeous! If my kitchen weren't so very white (and really, that's best for it), I'd be all over that.

AG, the Tunas Green is gorgeous; love that green. Did you ever consider soapstone? It is seriously RATE, so not for everyone. The greatest thing is that you never need trivets, never need to seal it, and it never stains. It is supposed to scratch and not look pristine. Only for those who love faded worn in jeans and don't mind the darkness.

We have subway with a slight crackle that gives it a bit of depth. Grout is a dark gray to go with the soapstone.

No wonder it looked familar! We were going to use that, but the granite place had a slab of an upgrade called Verde Butterfly that they offered us for the same price - similar colors but different pattern mix. Thanks for the close-ups - so helpful!

Our counter is granite in Uba Tuba, a green shade. The tiles are porcelain and are smaller sizing to the floor, but the same tiles. The glass mix is a sheet that has pieces of the glass and tile already mixed in. (Sorry the photos are not the best, it's still too dark right now so the flash is throwing them off)

We did a combination of porcelain tile that matched the floor and glass (photo #1). The glass was a sheet we cut up that had mixed glass and stone in it already.

Nadya, your kitchen is just gorgeous. I've bookmarked your page to show my son and his wife. They just purchased an older house and are planning to renovate the kitchen before they move into the place. The placement of the doors and windows looks very similar to yours. It'll be their first house and I think they are feeling a bit overwhelmed at all the decisions that go into a renovation! It will be nice to show them what is possible...

Gaylene, god point about the contrast in finishes. Our granite has an antiqued or "leathered" finish- so it's not shiny and not perfectly smooth. I never thought how well it contrasted with the smooth shiny glass until I read your post!

But how would you ever be able to keep a penny backsplash clean? Those raised surfaces and ridges? And behind a stove?

Sorry, just too practical here. Does anyone else ever wonder if people actually COOK in some of these kitchens that are shown on these websites and in magazines.

ETA: Oh, sorry, I see a mug with a teabag in one of the shots and a bottle of wine with a couple of glasses in another. I get it; people just drink in these kitchens Cooking is so middle-class.

I have dark granite countertops with a white backsplash that runs all the way up to the base of the upper cabinets. I haven't had any problems with the white grout, but that may be because I cook my spaghetti sauce in the crockpot. I have a steam cleaner that I use to clean my tile floor, which is a light taupe color with taupe grout.

One more... I am seriously tempted to do a backsplash out of pennies! So awesome! http://www.roomzaar.com/rate-m.....d=28791212 (Although I'd do a much less hectic granite if I were using pennies for the backsplash.)

I think glass tiles are gorgeous and was actually going to use them for my kitchen, until my tile guy talked me out of them. After the tiles were installed and grouted, I was happy that he did because I can see what he meant when he said he didn't like the effect when both the tile and the countertop were highly reflective. He preferred to use a matte or unpolished stone tile with a polished granite, and a glass or polished tile with a honed granite or marble countertop. Much like Angie likes to mix polished with a bit of RATE, he thought that the contrast made the final result more interesting.

I also was seriously thinking of Ramya's idea of running my wall tile all the way to the ceiling because that makes such perfect sense in a kitchen. I've done that in all of our bathrooms and love how easy it is to clean everything. I finally decided against it in the kitchen mainly because we may sell our house in a year or two and I'm not sure our target market loves tile as much as I do. That was another reason for using the subway tiles; they were much cheaper.

ETA: If you are thinking of using a colored grout, I'd definitely try to find a BIG sample board of the combination. My friend just remodelled her kitchen and chose a bluish grout to set off her white tiles and match her blue granite counters. She hated the final effect so much, so she ended up having it ripped out, much to her husband's dismay since her tiles were fairly expensive. But she just couldn't stand the look.

Well, how brilliant is that! Our kitchen already has yellow paint. If I could find something metallic/reflective so as to not look harvest gold - more mango - it would bring both color, light, and stain-proofing.

Haldi and all now I am sure...

Thanks, Ramya and Gaylene. My biggest fear is haldi (turmeric) which is so impossible to get out. I guess we'll have to make sure the grout is the right kind.... I do love the look of the subway tiles and always have wanted them in our bathroom.

Una I get what you say.
And you know how Indian Kitchens are.
In Mumbai I got the white tiles and trust me that was the best decision I took.Mumbai kitchen is small and White gave the extra sense of space and my countertop was black grey.
And with all the sabzis and kurmas and south Indian curry and rasam I actually felt a quick swipe with wet cloth was all it took to clean after cooking .
I did it as I was cleaning the gas burners .
