Agreed, Aida. Thanks for saying that. And thanks rachylou and Brooklyn for reporting your sightings. Another one from earlier this week: young petite woman wearing what appeared to be kick flares as an ankle length pant. Can't remember the shoes. (Alas, this is a tough one to get right.)

FWIW, I am feeling more drawn to kicks this season than last and would like to give them a try if I can find my way. I tried the Halogen kicks and didn't like on me even though they fit and the fabric appealed. I don't know, they felt too theatrical, too office-y or something. I'm thinking jeans, maybe black jeans with boots might help them work for me.

One more thought . . . I remember just before skinnies hit it big I saw them first on young hipster guys in their teens and early twenties. (Remember the low-rider ones with a baggy seat and skinny legs?) Then I saw them on young women. Next: ubiquitous. So it's super-interesting that this is more of a top-down trend. My hunch is that the shape - the movement toward a wider leg - is evolving. Curious to see where it lands. Culottes, maybe? Or are people still enamored with skinnies?

I will have to look out for that movie. I have seen some women wearing them here. All heights but mostly dressy renditions and mostly women over 35. I saw one woman wearing them today. Hers were a dark orange so quite bold (still dressy). We have the weather for it here

Oh, I've seen one lady in kick flare jeans. In the bakery parking lot. They fit perfectly and I wanted to run after her to ask what brand they were. She was stylin'. Hipster casual. I didn't tho. Too far to run

I think like most things the support act influences the final vibe, separate from any particular style detailing on the item itself. I mean, skinnies are pretty ubiquitous with punk... but are absolutely also worn across nearly ALL styles from classic on outwards.

(Not-currently-practicing-but-always-at-heart punk here. I'm very much enjoying my kick flares ^^)

Ledonna, curious, how have you seen people wearing them? Business-casual? Stylish/going-out? Age range?

Yes, I hear you, Rachylou, in their current iteration, at least the ones I've seen, they are not punk at all. Although I think they could be . . . and that interests me.

Fabulous. It's fun how we can trace the history of a trend way back if we pay attention.

Well now, I can't believe I haven't seen Suburbia, and it's a Roger Corman movie too. I love punk. But then again, I suppose I spent the 80s watching movies from the 60s, lol.

And too funny, I've not gotten on the kick flare bandwagon because they didn't seem punk enough to me.

I have seen kick flares two times on the street since I started paying attention last spring, both spotted on fashionable women in the 40-50-ish age range. Both women were taller than average. One wore jeans with high heeled gladiators that closed the gap. Another wore black "dress kicks" with high heeled sandals. The dress kicks flared more dramatically than the jeans and had a playful quality that reminded me of flamenco pants.

And then . . . I watched the punk classic Suburbia for the first time just a couple of weeks ago (80's B-movie classic about the LA punk scene that cast authentic punk kids instead of actors). And while most of the kids featured sport the cuffed-jean look (and is worth checking out for that alone) there's one character who wears Dickies high-waters. Initially they signal his outsiderness and perhaps parental neglect. Eventually they become part of his punk uniform. A less flamenco, more street precursor to the kick flare trend? Since Suburbia is a rough watch I can really only recommend it if you already have an affinity for punk. But if you do, it might inspire you.
