Never had a keratin treatment, but a friend did and found her scalp was very sensitive to it, requiring medical attention. There are various formulations and everyone is different, so I might research adverse reactions by type of product to see if any aspect of it could be problematic based on past experience. I also know people allergic to certain shampoo ingredients; this is not specific to keratin only.

In response to karymk's comment - it is true, that in the beginning my hair was flat - it lasted not quite a week - and then, I had just enough growth at the roots to "lift" it and it truly seemed like a miracle to me! I have medium textured hair that has become thinner over the years. I think, from what I remember about karymk's that her hair is quite thick - so, it probably varies depending on what type of hair that you have! ]
I have also discovered that each time that I have it done, it lasts longer than the time before - which is nice for my budget!

I have bi-textured hair that is straight on top and sides, but very wavy in the back. As soon as I cut my hair above the shoulders it became too puffy and unmanageable to style the back of my hair. My old stylist gave me a cold Japanese straightening treatment only on the back section of my hair. It worked well, but smelled horrible for at least a week and damaged my hair. My current stylist is using a keratin treatment in the same manner (a partial application only where the hair is really wavy) every 3-4 months. It does not make the hair stick straight, just relaxes it. My hair is in great condition. The only downsides for me is the 3 day no wash rule. I usually have my treatment on a Friday so I can wash on Monday morning.

Well i have had this done and I felt that it made my hair TOO straight, I couldn't get volume at the roots so I looked like a drowned rate for four months until i could get some "kink" back in at the roots enough to lift them with a dryer.

It might be great for shorter, thicker styles, but If your hair is fine or isn't a problem to style currently, then you might want to forgo the treatment, be it free or otherwise...

I've had several different types of straightening treatments over the years - my favorite being the formaldehyde-free Brazilian blow-out. I love it. It leaves my hair soft and shiny - and the waves and frizz that I usually have to deal with near the ocean are literally non-existent. My hair is in much better condition with the treatment than without it. It also cuts back on my hair-styling time in the mornings to just a couple of minutes - and my hair stays "perfect" all day. I wouldn't do without!

Needless to say my hair is super curly and I have used a home keratin treatment. I liked how soft it made my hair and it was much easier to straighten my hair for about 5-6 months following the treatment. (The caveat is I only wash my hair once a week). I think if I washed my hair more often the treatment was designed to last 90 days. The treatment required that I use sulfate and sodium free shampoo which prevents the keratin from being washed out quickly. I haven't done it lately because it's a multi-step process ( I don't see myself standing in front of a mirror for hours on end) but I would certainly do it again -- especially now since I have a chi flat iron.

You may want to ask your stylist about your hair may feeling "coated" and or your hair being tinged the color of the treatment. It may not be the case but I would ask.

I believe Mary is a big fan.

I had it done once and I loved it. It lasted for months. I had the process right before I went on vacation in Hawaii -- the perfect environment for bringing out the worst in my hair with lots of heat and humidity -- and it was so great to just run a comb through my hair and not think about it for hours. My stylist warned me that for the first week, my hair would be a bit flat, but that didn't bother me since that's such a change of pace for me (I spent years trying to tame the excess volume!).

It was fun to have "naturally" stick straight hair -- or at least close to it -- for the first time in my life. Almost like seeing how the other half lives. It left my hair very soft, shiny, and easy to manage, and the color lasted longer. As it grew out, the wave returned, but the frizz stayed under control for quite some time.

I would consider doing it again -- in fact, I've thought about it for my next salon visit, to get me through the rest of our humid summer here. I'm OK with letting my hair go wavy and a little wild, but it's not always my favorite look on me.

I've done a few different types of hair relaxing/straightening. I used to do the Japanese hair straightening process that was really popular a while back. That made my hair sleek and straight, but I stopped when the place I went to stopped offering it. (I think pretty much everywhere stopped once it turned out that it used formaldehyde or something.)

After that, I tried a Brazilian keratin treatment once and it didn't really do much. But my hair is extremely thick and wavy -- more than yours looks to be -- so that may just be me. I know lots of other people have been happy with it. And, also, I think there are a bunch of variations on the process and they've probably come up with new versions since I tried it.

I have very thick wavy hair and my main issue was with my bangs which tend to frizz up with the least amount of humidity. For the past few years, I have had my stylist apply a keratin treatment to my bangs only. I have it done about 4x/year and have had no issues at all. I do use a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner, though.

Hi Fabbers,

I am pretty sure this has been discussed before but couldn't find the thread. And I thought there may be others who could input.

I had my hair cut today and my stylist was surprised at just how wavy my hair is. She asked if I would like to be her model for a staff training session, where she will train them to use the latest Keratin Hair Relaxing treatment/process.

So, I am interested as I suspect if it works it will make my now short hair even easier and quicker to style in the mornings. But, I am curious to know of anyone's experience. Does it damage the hair? Did it work? I think once upon a time these treatments could be quite rough on the hair but there have been major improvements

I would really appreciate feedback from any Fabbers who care to share.

Thanks, and happy weekend.

xxx Deborah
