Thanks for all the styling advice for #1!

Jenava, I don't wear turtlenecks, but I will defiitely try a sheer blouse layered underneath. To be honest, the extra room in the armholes and shoulders doesn't really show unless I walk around with my arms held out, so I'm not too worried about it, particularly with another layer either on top or beneath.

AJ! Good to hear from you! I love the photo you posted - I have wanted a wool felt cloche hat like that for a while but have not managed to find one that fits my gigantic head.

Denise, yes, I will definitely dress it down for work! I'm thinking it could also work as a skirt, with a top over it.

I agree with rae and Angie - toss #2 and #3 - I think they both look a bit dated. #1 is wonderful though! In the first two photos the armholes seem OK, but if you feel they're too big, have it altered. But please, keep it!

I love the first one on you. It is classic yet also right on trend. I'm not a fan of #2, and while #3 is very pretty on you, it's a little dated.

I have the problem of too-large armholes all the time as well.

ETA -- First dress could also be dressed down for work attire.

Diana, I'd also love to see something layered under this, FWIW. Like a long sleeved cream sheer blouse or a thin black turtleneck. Do you think you'd need to alter it if you did that?

Thanks, all. I think I'll definitely keep the first one since everyone seems to love it, and see about altering it. I'm wondering if just taking in the sides at the top as Jenava suggests would work... I think I could do that myself by hand, as to be honest I don't have a tailor here I trust and my mom is in CA and has too much on her plate right now anyway. I also think if I wore a jacket over, the too big armhole wouldn't show anyway. May try some styling options later. I think I need to start thinking of it more as an everyday rather than a fancy dress.

I'm strongly leaning toward ditching the other two, and it seems like most of you would agree.

#1 is nice - I think you could alter it to work with your style maybe shortened and the side seams taken in at the top) and it could be excellent for layering.

#2 reminds me of lingerie...I say pass, esp. if you have other black dresses.

#3 just not really that special, I think?

#1 is so beautiful on you it is worth altering. I love the shape of it, so flattering! And the flared skirt is especially flattering for pears. You could make it edgier with a topper.

I also love that first dress. I tried a very similar one on the other day in a vivid purple, just for fun. Unfortunately, I also had fit issues through the shoulders, much worse than yours. I think yours could be fixed more easily than mine, and I think the effort would be worth it. It wouldn't be hard to accessorize it to give it a little more of your personalized style and it looks so good on you.

Too bad about the bust seam being too high on the last dress. Could that be fixed with a different bra perhaps? A lace-trimmed cami might solve the "boobalicious" problem, if that would suit your style. You do look awfully nice in that dress.

You look nice in the black dress too, but it has probably done its time. It depends really, on how much you want the closet space.

#1 is gorgeous and sophisticated, and I agree with the others that you should have it altered for a perfect fit.
I like #3 too for a casual summer dress, maybe topped by one of your lacy hand knits.
I don't think the spaghetti straps in #3 do you justice.

Please consider altering the first dress - the waist and skirt are so flattering, taking in the top half shouldn't be a big deal for a tailor.

I think this morning I've realized something about myself: I have poison eye for spaghetti straps. You should ignore what I say about them. I like the first and last dresses on you - you have a great figure and they showcase it nicely. Your right tho about the bust seam on the one, but I wouldn't have been paying attention in other circumstances.

Thinking about dresses today, so I decided to do a purge of my formal and semiformal dresses. I am definitely getting rid of three old dresses (including a new cheongsam, does anyone want it?) that do not fit. Here are three more dresses that still fit, more or less, but which I am unsure about.

1-3: Calvin Klein stretch wool dress. This dress is extremely heavy and quite warm, which is nice for winter. However, it's a bit too big in the armholes and bust - see in the back photo, where I am holding out the armholes. I am not stretching the fabric here, that is all excess unstretched fabric. I am not sure the largeness shows normally though. I'm also not sure this is my style at all - it's very conservative (my mom bought it and she has much more classic taste than me). Also, possibly not the most flattering for pear shapes? I have worn it once, to a very conservative church wedding on New Year's Day.

4-5: ABS LBD. I've had this for maybe 10 years, and it has been worn a number of times but not recently. Still fits, but maybe a little too young, short, and maybe a little dated for me these days. The material is layered chiffon. (psst: Angie, this is what a spaghetti strap dress looks like on me). I have two other LBDs, a more structured, fancy one and the lace allsaints wrap one.

6-8: BCBG printed light blue dress. Another one I've had for ages and worn to various weddings and such. It's the only light colored fancy dress I own which is nice for things like summer weddings. I like the shape but it tends to show lumps and bumps because of the bias cut, especially if I slouch like I am wont to do. I refuse to wear shapewear. It can also be a little bit boobalicious if I am not careful. Finally, I think you can tell that the bust seam is a little bit too high and tends to cut across the bottom of my boobs.
