I love these! The long sweater with booties are perfect together! I hesitate to wear white pants in winter but this looks plenty winter-y. Maybe I'll get mine back out

Thanks for the thumbs up, fabbers. I encourage everyone to give the crop flare/booties a try. Don't put the pants away for the winter just yet (unless you're Una, in the Alaskan tundra). My boots are a bit bulky and bulbous for the look, but they work alright, and I actually like the sliver of skin showing.

Thanks, Diane! High contrast is my form of "neutral" dressing.

BC: It took the Forum to teach me that white and black is even better than black and white!

Chris: This shoulder line reminds me of the costuming in the new Star Wars movie -- I do like it better than a true cap sleeve!

Elizabeth: You are the high contrast queen, thanks for the thumbs up!

Suz: I was worried about figuring out the proportions for a long time, and then it fell together in the end. I like the structured knit of this gillet, but it's definitely more basic and casual. I have a second one that is more of a sleeveless jacket and mid thigh length. I do not yet have one with the crisp tailoring I'd like! Still, it's good to have stylish items that aren't too "precious" in my line of work!

Joy: You do this color scheme so well, thanks for the encouragement!

Bennett: Yes, I also like a tailored shoulder line -- but it's the dropped seam on long sleeved tops -- you know, the kind that bissect the bicep. Ick!

You look fantastic in both of your outfits! These could go just about anywhere and look comfortably chic.

I have an allergy to those little cap sleeves, though. I would have to take the scissors to them before the gillet was allowed into my closet!

Fantastic!! These are both wonderful outfits on you and you have completely nailed the proportions. I love to see you in the white jeans and you look great in the high contrast overall. Plus, now you know that a long gilet works so you can keep an eye out for the next iteration/ upgrade. Brava!!

Great proportions, you nailed it! Love both looks. The gillet shoulder line looks very good to me..somehow more interesting than a traditional shoulder line yet well balanced with everything else

I'm been meaning to try these proportions (along with culottes and a return to wide leg pants) for months. A couple of days ago, in the chaos of the seasonal wardrobe transition, I hit upon a workable, practical version of today's ensemble post.

I would never have been able to pull this together without Angie! Silhouette changes, and long term wardrobe planning are the toughest, and YLF has made my style life so much easier in the last several years!

1.
Start off with black/white, but, to make things a bit fresher, make it more white than black. Add cropped flares (these do flare, but it shows more from the side) and suede booties, a structured knit gillet, and a Foxcroft blouse (that's a bit of an orphan). Top it off with a blingy necklace! This is what I wore for therapy sessions and new client meetings.

I wish this Foxcroft blouse wasn't such a soft cotton. A bit heavier weight would keep it from shifting during the day. As a lefty, shlepping instruments all day, I notice the buttons lurching toward my left arm. No tuck today, because these are high waisted pants.

2.
Sub out the blouse and necklace for a knit tee and a long scarf. A little subtle pattern mixing here, and a bit of bling in the form of a long pendant necklace. This is exceedingly comfy, and the knit gillet stays un-mussed even through car rides! I'm not wild on the shoulder line of the gillet, or on the way the loose striped sleeves make my arms look a bit rounder. But who is actually staring at my arms anyway? I could have lengthened the line by staying low contrast, but there are days when boldness is best! Also, I think the booties/crop pant gap is actually helped by my more sturdy ankles.
