Thanks Zaeobi. I apply the shoe polish outdoors and then leave it to dry there. I use Tarrago shoe cream. It’s not a dye but it does have some colour in it so you can use it to nudge a colour in a direction (darker or warmer/cooler but not lighter) or to add a metallic sheen. I’ve used it on handbags too. I even used it to revive my ombré leather jacket (which had faded around the shoulders quite a lot).

I just realised I read through this when you originally posted it but never commented!

You always find the best skirts - I agree with @SF that most of the printed &/ or tiered maxis I find are too 'poofy', so I stick with solid ones. But they're a good FFBO for you.

You did a great job with the metallic shoe polish - I'm having difficulty finding dark brown comfy flats, so I might just dye some of my existing ones instead. I'm guessing you need an open space to let them air out after applying the polish? Or do you just leave them in the washing machine?

Mary Beth, lots of people just use a bucket. I have a front loader and I use that for my dyeing because I think a machine gives a more saturated result. I do wipe it out and run a load of darks afterward (in case of residual dye).

Thanks for the tutorial! I haven’t dyed anything since we got our front load washer two years ago, and I’m feeling the lack of playing with colors. It’s pretty cool that shibori can be done on a flat surface. I’ll definitely check it out and see if this is something I can handle without creating a pink bathtub ring!

Thanks all! I’ve been trying out some shibori style tie dyeing over Summer. I’ll report on that later. Very hit and miss :)

Mary Beth, I just did a google search on shibori dyeing and watched some YouTube videos. This website has some quick demonstrations of various techniques:

https://www.tiedyeyoursummer.c.....-technique

Most people seem to do it by hand with a dye kit and plastic bag but I still use the washing machine and RIT dye because it’s less messy.

And brilliant idea on the sandals - why not experiment. You do have excellent ways to upcycle clothes.

So much fabulousness to unpack! I'm sighing over how beautiful the skirt is, and I'm in awe at your ability to create so many different outfits that are cohesive to your style - easy, elegant, casual, not-too-precious-for-everyday-real-life.

Random thoughts as they pop into my head:

I would love to see your shorts capsule! Also, I'm excited to see how you layer this skirt for winter outfits.

It hadn't occurred to me that a metallic leather polish could be used to change the color of a shoe. I always thought that needed dye or paint. I need to take a look at my closet, and the Saphir website.

If you have a favorite how-to video or article link for tie-dyeing, I'd love to see it :)

Wow, that is a fabulous skirt on you and I love all of these looks. I can see how you can winterize it a bit too so it's not just for summer.

Love hearing about your dying projects. Such a great way to make something that is just OK into something perfect for you. The gold sandals are my favorite. I have some tan sandals that the color has never been quite what I want. I tried using a brown polish on them but I think gold would be better. Now to find some of that shoe cream....

Oh, I love how you styled this skirt in so many possible different ways! Wow! You certainly have a talent for accessorizing these looks in a very personal, modern, artsy way which to my eyes are the main feature in all these looks. I have this same formula for summer but with a pleated, or A-line skirt. Always wanted an asymmetric one but just didn't run into the right one yet. Sobbing...:-(

Suz, thank you, how exciting! I’m flattered! I’ll keep an eye out for you. Vince can be a good source for asymmetrical skirts. You can also convert a maxi skirt to an asymmetrical skirt.

Angie, it’s a challenge. The other ever present problem here is sun exposure, especially when I spend a lot of time outdoors. I am finding the longer skirts practical in that respect. I wish I could tolerate longer sleeves but it’s a no go. But the cotton t-shirts I’ve sourced work for me.

And thanks Columbine and Jaime!

WOW. That is all I have to say. This is SO brilliant and truly inspirational.

I have now decided once and for all that I need an asymetrical skirt (or three) and that this is going to be my summer formula, too. I already have a version of this with the rip skirt (not asymmetrical, but similar in feel) and I know how well it works for me. What I need to make this do-able (in addition to the right skirts) are the right tops and a richer complement of accessories. I have some, but will need to add them in the right colours/ neutrals.

The dye job on the sandals turned out gorgeously! Really liking your skirt! The asymmetry keeps it so fun and the moody florals as well. I'm looking for my next skirt because I like longer skirts and mixing it up with different tops and footwear also. My fave skirt is getting a little tired.

Thanks all!

Fash, thanks for the thought. I was being cheeky back about the tiered skirt. I’m not nursing any hurt feelings about it or anything else. We all have our own individual style. I think there is a lot of kindness and goodwill here (with Angie leading the way). I wouldn’t post otherwise! On the sandals, it’s interesting that you say that because “patina” was what I was going for. It may not be apparent in the photos but the original colour does come through a bit, giving that aged look. It’s hard to apply the polish in a deliberately uneven way.

Angie, thanks for the kind words. It is satisfying! And I give you and YLF the credit for getting me here. Thank you! If Mama doesn’t approve, she will certainly let me know :)

Slim cat, I think you are doing better than you think. I really enjoy your posts. And you inspired me to get into graphic tees. So thank you!

SarahD8, I have 2 outfit photos in the same skirt that I didn’t post (because I wasn’t happy with them). And 2 more that I did post in the end but wasn’t sure about. The lilac was in that latter category. I did think it worked with the skirt because the skirt has pinkish grey tones in it. But the colour doesn’t feel as natural a fit with my style as the more earthy tones. I feel better that you and Fash liked it. I will persist with the colour for time being (otherwise, off to the dye bath it goes!)

Nikki, I’m not surprised. I have silver cuffs that I call my wonder cuffs!

WONDERFUL!!! I learn so much from your posts.

I think all the outfits are great, I cannot pick a favorite. (Although the lilac did stand out to me...I see in the thread above you mention feeling dubious about it. I wonder if it stood out to me because it is *my* palette, which is maybe not yours. I do like the way it pulls out and enriches the lighter shades in the skirt, though.)

This is all a great argument for considered duplication, and doing what you know works for you. I see a real confidence and ease in these outfits. I continue to be so inspired by the tweaks you make to your items (dyeing them etc.) to make them work better for you.

This skirt is fabulous on you. And each version is fabulous. But if you make me pick a fav or would be black tee and boots, or the olive tee and bag or the cognac tee and sandals or the…ok I love them all.

If the comment’s cheeky, you know it’s really me. :)
Thanks for posting the tiered skirt. Many of them have the tiers attached in a way that make them progressively wide and stand out more from the body. I’ve been wondering how that shape would work in your style, but I see this one is less full and more consistent with the shapes (and colors and patterns) you wear. Sounds like a great outfit you have on now. I understand why you aren’t posting photos—hugs!

On using the gold polish on other shoes, I wonder if you could apply it unevenly to give a burnished/patina kind of look. Or is that too RATE for you?

I love your summer outfit formula Brooklyn, what I really like about your style is how each item has a strong design yet works so harmoniously together (skirt/ jewellery/ geometric handbag).

CG, thanks! I like the sandals much better with the gold polish. I might go a bit crazy and do some more of my shoes with metallic cream.

MJ, thank you! You are my inspiration. Truly.

Fash, thanks! I am surprised you mention the lilac outfit. I still have doubts about lilac for me. I was thinking about overdyeing that lilac top to “dirty” it up a little. I feel like the colour is too clean for me. Very cheeky to mention tiered skirts! FYI, right now I am wearing brown and gold tiered skirt, black tank top and the sandals in pic 14.

You have definitely nailed your signature look, gorgeous!I really love that you have thought of ways to continue using older wardrobe pieces as well I.e. knotting your longer tees and dyeing your shoes. We all need to take a leaf out of your book in making our wardrobes more sustainable. The shoes have come up great.

Excellent! The skirt is so versatile and you wear asymmetrical skirt the best way. Love all outfits and can't pick favorite. I agree about necklaces and bag. Enjoy your new skirt!
