I apply the shoe polish outdoors and then leave it to dry there. I use Tarrago shoe cream. It’s not a dye but it does have some colour in it so you can use it to nudge a colour in a direction (darker or warmer/cooler but not lighter) or to add a metallic sheen. I’ve used it on handbags too. I have a front loader and I use that for my dyeing because I think a machine gives a more saturated result. On the sandals, it’s interesting that you say that because “patina” was what I was going for. It may not be apparent in the photos but the original colour does come through a bit, giving that aged look.
