I think you look wonderful! I like skirt 1 and would keep it and see how much wear it gets. I would move all of the rest to the hold or donate pile. I do like the idea of a fresh denim skirt for you!

Jenn, that is a brilliant idea. I'm set for regular historical petticoats already, but it would be terrific as part of a fantasy costume! Thank you!

Thank you for your words of wisdom, Sally. To the holding zone they go! And you're very right, these really are not what I'd choose to wear compared to some of the other things I have now.

I really like 1 on you- keep wear and enjoy.

I think the rest could go, or at least in the holding zone. I have seen you wear some great skirts and dresses and these do not compare.

I have held onto pieces thinking about the happy memories in the past, but in the most part they are better finding a new home if I am unsure. I don't purge lightly but I have only regretted doing so once (black boots - why did I let you go!).

I agree with the majority that #1 has the most potential going forward. Since you do a lot of costuming/garb, could #2 be used as a petticoat if it stays in your closet? I have several cupcake/tiered skirts left from my dance days, and I keep them around mostly for costuming purposes.

Thanks so much, everyone! I'm making an effort to lose some weight this spring (and I have lost this same 20+ pounds before) so the favorites might go into a holding zone.

Sveta, thank you so much. This is hard to hear (I am SO sentimental) but I really need it.

Joy, I was surprised at how much I liked #1, so I suspect I will be wearing it several times. Especially now that I've got a white tee or two to set it off. By tube skirt, do you mean the snug knitted ones? I have and they're terrible on me. :( Besides outlining all the lumps (and mine are big) it showed how objectively wide my hips are, compared to upper body. It also wanted to slide upward off my hips; elastic just won't stay down. At my lighter weight I did carry off a classic pencil skirt pretty well, but I benefited from the structure to skim my curves just a little bit more.

Diana, that is very helpful analysis! I'm considering keeping #5 in the holding zone for now. I'm making a serious effort to lose some weight (I've lost this 25 before) and it might be very useful when it fits again.

You're right, Maneera. I'm already not reaching for any of these, and except for the pink one, I won't based on this try-on. The denim I think will go into the holding zone

Cerinda, you are so right! Especially the khaki. Thank you!

I'm afraid I'm admiring your khaki skirts in terms of similar style likes, not evaluating them on you. Is #10-13 is shorter than you usually wear now?

I think #1 deserves another chance. The others do seem a bit tight, though I quite love the denim skirt. However, if it's tight and uncomfortable, you'll find excuses to not wear it.

I agree that #1 is great. I'd probably donate the rest. #2 looks a bit dated to me. 4 & 5 both look a bit too tight, although I do like the style of #5. #3 is OK but I agree the khaki color is not the best for you.

I agree with Sveta. If you want to wear #1 this summer, keep it and see if you reach for it. The others pull in ways that announce extra inches, and #2, well I have a poison eye for tiered skirts except on young girls. You deserve some new skirts. That show off your beautiful figure. Have you tried a tube skirt?

I can see only #1 as having a potential as a fun summer skirt. I would pass on all others, especially as you also have fit isses with them :-(

I haven't made the time for a full closet review yet, but I did go through my skirts last weekend. It was... difficult. Some skirts were easy decisions, but others aren't. A number of them have a lot of good wear in them, that I feel affection for. But I've slowly gained about 25 pounds in 5 years, and most of it's on my hips. It profoundly affects the fit of more A-line skirts, as they ride higher on my torso and even above my waist.

My style has also evolved a bit. I used to try to blend in more, not emphasizing my waist as much, and settling for a gentle hourglass shape. I did a lot of vintage and made-from-vintage patterns, but in unobtrusive styles and separates. Mixed in were the best modern pieces I could find. Skirts had to fit smoothly on the hips, tops had to be shaped through the waist with enough hip room and just the right length. It wasn't easy, but it was the first time I had my own aesthetic, and the challenge was fun.

The shift into my present style was a combination of factors. The mainstream acceptance of dress and full skirts; weight gain; eShakti; and growing confidence and acceptance of standing out. I really do like where I am now.

Trying on these skirts was unexpectedly fraught, especially the veterans of my previous style. They didn't fit quite like they used to, of course. And with all of the memories, it's hard for me to assess them for current use. I would really appreciate advice on some of these.

#1-3: Pale pink skirt with printed floral border in bright pink and orange. This doesn't have a true waistband, so it actually fits better than it used to. A keep for now.

#4-9: Fine white cotton tiered skirt. This is a beautiful item, that feels wonderful on. But I don't know how it works now. It's too loose to tuck effectively, and the bias grain of the top tiers and lining are distorted by my curves. (See wrinkle in #6; I fixed it with a tug for #7, but it would come back.) It's also a bit boho for me. Boho is a style that I feel leanings toward, and experimented with many times, but somehow does not work quite right for me. I would really LIKE to make it work, because it's so much fun to wear. But I can't come up with a combination that's fitted enough at the waist and doesn't involve fiddly layers or slippy belting.

#10-13: Soft khaki sateen pleated skirt. This was a workhorse. It doesn't have a true waistband either, but the narrow belt creates an illusion. It definitely looks a lot thicker at the profile than I'm used to looking. And khaki does my skin tone no favors.

#14-17: Khaki poplin pleated skirt; an earlier eShakti purchase, and I really liked it for a while. It's riding a little high from my weight gain, and I'm not sure if the pleats are a good idea for the back view.

#18-20: Denim gored skirt, an even older workhorse. Definitely riding high, and the seams are distorted by my curves.

Ideas?
